Am I an oddball?

talonxvtalonxv Member Posts: 4,257 Arc User
There are many posts about wanting a tier 5 connie[no this is not a thread about that!], or wanting JJ Verse enterprise, or god every known combination or permutation of the Enterprise. And ofcourse I see every other conciviable spelling of enterprise whether it be a tier 2 connie, or a tier 5 soverign.

Here's my stupid question. Is it wrong for me to want to NOT be part of the mold. To want to fly something NEW? Like an Odyssey, or Avenger or Mogh? Something that WASN'T in one of the frakking TV shows?

Or to NOT be Kirk or Picard. To not be one of my heros, but blaze my own trail for my own perspective?

Cause holy jeebus, more I read these forums, more I see "I want a tier 5 connie!" "I want my galaxy to be the biggest BA on the block because it was in TNG!"

I mean is it weird for my Primary toon i want to fly either my avenger or the Odyssey?

Am I crazy? And is anybody else out there that crazy?

Yes... Yes you are an oddball.

Not in this particular case... but in general ;)

You're not the only one. That's why I love my Odyssey so much: I don't want to swim in Kirk and Picard's wake. It's a new century, IN SPAAAAAAACE!!!, and I want to blaze my own trail.

Personally, I think they put too much effort into dredging up antique ships. Time to put those old birds out to pasture and introduce new ships. The Odyssey and Vesta classes are the future of the fleet!

    Well since you asked

I loved TNG it was great (not the first season) enjoyed almost every episode.

That being said I never really cared for the actual Galaxy D not enough to fly one in game for longer than a little bit. HOWEVER All of my BOFF and Captains use the TNG uniforms season2-7 and it makes me happy every time I see the rank on the collar instead of chest.

I also loved Voyager and the ship I dont fly the intrepid or use the uniforms but it was a great show and I rewatch it regularly.

Here comes the flame) I also am fanatic about the most recent Enterprise show and Cpt. Archer I fricken love that show but again I dont fly or use the uniforms even though I think they are great.

So no your not crazy at low lvl I fly a Connie but I know its outdated and it FEELS outdated I'm fine with that TOS was pretty horrid in my opinion anyway its just funner than the Miranda class if you ask me.

Idk maybe we are both crazy but I like to pretend I'm a captain in TNG era who would back up Picard and Janeway in the Neutral zone any day but I dont consider myself a "kirk" <--he was never a cool cat in my opinion or Picard <--cool cat I like to consider myself my own blend of captain. I just wish that fantasy could be a little more clear with something to do on my ship and my ships NPC's wearing the same uniform as my BOFFS

I honestly can't take a Constitution/Galaxy class ship seriously at tier 5. The former is the second-most obsolete playable craft in the game, superior only to the even-older Miranda class. The latter is pretty bluntly outclassed both in-game and in-canon by the modern generation of capital ships.

Not to mention I prefer to fly something that looks a little more battle-ready than a giant dinner plate with a coathook attached.
Arc is garbage. End of discussion.

Nope. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder.

Personally, I like kitbashing the ships into the uncanny valley - like my regent with a sovereign saucer and pylons, but noble hull/deflector and regent nacelles or my D'deridex with D'ridthau downward-swept wings/hull.

I know what you're saying, but had hoped for a more familiar framework, in which to not be anyone from the shows!

couldnt give two hoots about the connie, however should the t2 connie get the retrofit treatment then i want the t1 miranda to get it as well since the miranda is just a modified connie saucer head with nacelles and a torpedo mission module attached to it and besides the t'varo and b'rels getting t5 versions.

im not one of those connie fanboy types who are asking the impossible.

    Yes, you're completely bat-[REDACTED] insane.

Just like me. Stick the NCC-1701 in a musem where it belongs, and melt the rest of the Connies down for materials to make real current-day starships.

    No.

    Or possibly yes.

Basically you're no more or less oddball than those wanting a tier V Connie.

Everyone (who's stayed) has come to the game and found something that tickles their fancy.

Doesn't matter if your fancy tickler is the same as mine, as long as everyones fancy gets tickled.

And, now, for some reason i feel i need a shower.

Alright you got me. An upgraded T'liss for the end game, would do wonders for the internal stability at this point in time. If that is crazy, embrace sanity! For it is no doubt a sweet cup of pleasant thoughts, and calm imagery! Bringing a tranquil aura of soberness to anyone approaching!

i wouldnt have a problem with the T'liss getting the t5 treatment, problem is though that the T'varo beat the T'liss to it.

I could see a tier 5 Exeter, since we have a tier 5 t'varo. But not a connie and hell no to a miranda.

But basically just see so many people who want to be their idol? Is it nuts to want to be my OWN hero, who stands apart from the past?

it makes me laugh when I see people say things like "I wont fly any ship that's not lore or canon" or "how can they do that when it wasn't in the show" or "how come there are species that never featured in star trek" especially when people complained about dinosaurs in the game.
nothing in star trek was lore until it was featured, as this game starts just after star trek the prime time line left off with the destruction of the Romulan home world Romulus anything they add to the game as far as ships, aliens or storylines is fair game as far as I am concerned and has become lore by featuring in this game.
its great when they have something in the game that was in the series or movies but its cool to have new stuff too even dinosaurs, I am sure given time they would have been in the show too, lets face it if they had the giant white rabbit being chased by alice and a knight on horseback then anything goes.

When I think about everything we've been through together,

maybe it's not the destination that matters, maybe it's the journey,

and if that journey takes a little longer,

so we can do something we all believe in,

I can't think of any place I'd rather be or any people I'd rather be with.

Options are always nice. Sometimes I like to keep things very canon. Other times I like to be very inventive. I'd rather not be forced into a mold, and I'd rather not throw the mold away.

    This.

Star Trek Online is about being the center of your own story. It's not you being any of the canon characters, or flying the Enterprise/Defiant/Voyager.

This story is all about ME, flying my own ship, and my adventures blowing stuff up and collecting loot. :D

    Yup.

i have some toons restricted to faction only ships, others can't use faction ships.

Some get to use both, depending.

    It's all good.

You're definitely not odd man out on this. I've always thought they should have kept the integrity of their setting better. But I think the cats out of the bag on this one.

But really on the t5 Connie. They know people want it, ok, seriously, they know. If something changes and Cryptic can give it to us, they'll tell us. So what's the point of bringing it up constantly?

    Nagging strategy.

Like kids nagging the parents constantly for that toy they really really really want. Eventually the parents just give in and buy it for their next birthday.

Obviously it won't work here, but plenty of players will try regardless.

    Yes.

    [re: conversation]

Yeah this game is long due for a timeline update. Excelsiors and Mirandas shouldn't have been in use during the Dominion War, let alone now. Nothing older than a Sovereign should be in use, and by that I mean this: the ships used by NPCs, and the ships in the basic leveling lineup, should all be current ones. Especially, we should be seeing a lot of refits in the NPC ranks. Sure, let people who want to fly a Miranda or a Constitution do so, but not as part of the main lineup. As for the t5 Connie and nagging, a better analogy is the kid nagging his parents to get him heroin or something. Even if the parents were (disturbingly) willing, it's not gonna happen, because it's not up to them.

Anyway, the old "workhorse" ships currently in use for the various careers should be the Sovereign, Prometheus, and maybe the Intrepid. It's a new-ish model, but I don't know; it reeks of the 24th century design aesthetic that this game should be distancing itself from -- you know, the squarish nacelles with conical red tips and blue glow. Then again, the Prometheus has this too.

If we're going to compare this to the TNG era, then the Sovereign is the Excelsior, the older-but-still-widespread ship, and the Odyssey is the Galaxy, the new up-and-coming flagship, you newfangled rascals.

Even Defiants shouldn't be in use. Sao Paulos, though, sure. Partially because they're a newer refit class and partially because they're just that awesome-looking. But yeah, we should be seeing a lot of the Regent, Sao Paulo, whatever the Intrepid refit is called...

    And for the last time:

    NO

    MIRANDAS

MIRANDAS ARE A HUNDRED AND FIFTY YEARS OLD

WHY ARE WE STILL USING THEM

    I MEAN

THEY WERE CANNON FODDER FIFTY YEARS AGO IN THE DOMINION WAR

I SHOULD PROBABLY STOP YELLING NOW

If the Avenger wasn't so ugly, I'd agree... but lately I've started to lose faith in Cryptic's ability to make ships that would fit in with everything else in Star Trek.
