I support this idea. I think after 4 years its time to move on. remember when we only had rear admiral and moved up to vice admiral later on? we all go tover it and have fun flying the vice admiral stuff. I can think of a way that it would not make our ships useless as we rank up. like the fleet system and ranking that up, make like doff missions to upgrade your ships. shields, deflector, engine, console slots, weapon slots, boff slots, as you level you can customize your ship and loadout to your needs. perhaps as you get higher in tiers you can unlock more boff slots so to have a 6 or a 7 boff ship. its about wht you'd expect as you level up. at lvl 90 grant a skill to call in 2 ships from your roster as support. crews and equipment needed on the ships or they warp in as immobile. upon reaching level 90 undergo a mission to equip these ships and designate a intern-captain. or even could do away with the shill and just have 3 ships toghther at all times (would make sense as at that point your a fleet admiral 5 pip).
these are my ideas how this could work. feel free to add or edit as anyone see's fit. This is one new mechanic I really look forward to seeing in the future and think could sirously invigorate this game.
What good is a Admiral if you cant promote your bridge officers beyond Commander, this set-up does not bode well with the Star Trek theme
i dont see why at like lvl 60 or so you couldnt promote your boff's further. technically they are still under your command but command their own vessles. this could be the backbone of a space away team type of mechanic that gains more ships the higher you go all the way to fleet admiral which could have 4 ships under the admiral's direct command. I could see this as a very entertaining mechanic. each map they do scales up to the number of ships brought in kind of like they do now only with a captain and boffs instead of players. teams of captains could bring a total of fifteen ships and map difficulty could be upgraded to accomodate the number.

I have to agree with you on this subject matter, furthermore I also liked your previous idea regarding DOFFS:D

I mean, the systems are there and in place. why not?! it solves several issues in the game. including lack of progression. I wont say im the first to suggest it but i dont recall ever seeing the suggestion before.
First off, as many have stated, what is the point if all people do is race to max level anyways?
If it does go ahead however (which form podcasts it looks like it will), my suggestions would be this:
IF console slots are added to ships at higher levels, then at each successive tier, all existing level 50 ships should be retrofittable FOR FREE (given that they have already been paid for in one way or another) and a free non retrofittable 10, 11, etc console version of the current level 40 ships should then be made available to F2Pers when they hit level 60, 70, etc.
I don't actually like this idea though, just that it's hard to think of another way to increase the level cap without invalidating stuff that people have spent time and money on. This is especially true for fleets and fleet ships. I'm not a doomsayer, but stuff like this has seen mass exoduses in other games.
I would much rather see a level cap increase simply mean that our current power creep gear slowly gets content that is equal to said crept power. Gated content for gated gear without actually gating the content, if you follow.
The Borg, Romulan and Undine (if we get a undine related rep) story arcs could be retrofitted into this system too. You would get the associated marks for completing those episodes (say 40-50 per episode) and when you get to level 50, you continue to level up, do the story, and at the same time get XP and marks for your rep grind which you will need to do anyways because the content will get progressively more difficult as you level up. Tholian and Dyson Rep would need some mark giving episode love too.
There's no need for extra console slots, more doff slots or more captain abilties. It is already possible to faceroll ANY of the PvE content with the right team, builds and attitude. What is needed if the level cap increases is just more difficult content and less of a 'tutorial' feel to post level 50 content. Giving us moar powah! will just give us the status quo and take us an extra couple of days to get back to business as usual.
All said and done though, I don't really see the need for a level cap increase. I just want more endgame content and more difficult stuff that's immune to 'it's too hard QQ' that gives higher rewards. If the game content is gonna be added to, why not just do it at current end game?
"So my fun is wrong?"
No. Your fun makes everyone else's fun wrong by default.
-mk XII gear remains the best gear or...
-mk XII gear can be traded in through the rep system at a reasonable cost; so no dilithium sinks as we already went through that to get the mk XII gear.
-fleet ships, 800 lobi ships and purchased c-store ships can be upgraded in a similar way without dilithium sinks or additional lobi.

Here is an idea that would give an option tying things together:
Make lvl 51+ in the rep system. Just as you have the upgrade to claim the next tier, add an upgrade to claim next level. With current rep system options, that would move the cap to 70. That wouldn't change much of anything else until new rep systems are added, since that is where a chunk of new gear gets added anyhow.
