I would enjoy a Cardassian mini-faction of some sort, if the game ever got one. I like Cardassians more than Romulans.
They'd obviously have to make some sort of change to the Galor to compensate for the fact that there's a lockbox Galor. Probably make the one available to Cardassians weaker somehow. Or just not have Galors with the 'current' Cardassian military (after all, it could be considered outdated by this time). It would be interesting, nonetheless.
The Cardassians have never been a major power in Star Trek, more like an annoyance. They fought a small border conflict with the Federation, then couldn't even stamp out terrorists with antiquated fighters, then got curb stomped by the Klingons even after being warned they were coming. They had to ride the coat tails of the Dominion to become feared and even then the Dominion realized the Cardassians weren't all that great and went out and got the Breen to help.
But they are, or at least were before STO. Just look at the map and the territories each faction controls. The Cardassian Union was clearly a vast Empire and one of the 'big 4' in the A/B Quadrants. Few points:
- They didn't want to just stomp out the terrorists because of risking further conflict with the Federation at that time, which as Star Trek has it, is usually not a good idea.
- We're talking about Klingons here. Klingons always kick butt, they live for battle. And they actually managed to repel the majority of the attack, that's why Gowron came back mad to DS9 to straighten it out with Sisko. Also don't forget that this is happening shortly after the war with the Federation.
- The Dominion went not only to the Breen, but to the Romulans before that. The thing with the Dominion is that they only had a small nearly insignificant portion of their full forces in the Alpha Quadrant before the Prophets closed their gate. That's why they went on searching for allies and that's why they approached the Breen. That and aparently some former issue between the Breen & the Romulans. But if the Dominion had their full force transfered, they'd just roflstomp everything - DS9 has been prettly clear on that part.
And at the end, who turned the tides of the war? The Cardassians. Sisko's now or never moment almost backfired before the Cardassian Guls switched sides in the battle.
The Cardassians were always one of the major powers, the thing is by the timeframe of DS9, they had lost a war with the Federation and had some tough times shortly after with Klingons invading, then losing the Obsidian Order fleet in the attack on the Founders homeworld and finally the war they were fighting on the Dominion side.
Gamewise, there is milion times the potential for the Cardassian Union to restore it's former glory than D'Tan's Republic to reach the influence of the RSE. Since we have the Republic as the Romulan faction in STO I see no problem with the Cardassian faction being plausible. They basically hold the same territory, but are devastated by wars. And that was a long time ago, if the RR can rebuild and organize an invasion in the Delta Quadrant, I see no obstacles for the Union regaining it's power.
And yeah, I also think that there's a lot of potential in exploring the Cardassian society in the storylines as it is now, liberated from an opressive regime. The Cardassians throughout DS9 were really intriguing and complex characters, especially Garak. I think there's a lot of potenital in a storyline dwelving into Cardassian culture, society and psychology as the rebiuld their faction.

What we have in the alien gen just doesn't cut it.

I like the vaguely aquatic-themed ships.
