I loved SWG but I can never forgive SOE and its devs for what they did to it out of pure greed.
At one time it was one of the most complex and interesting MMo's ever with its diverse class and character creation system and huge crafting and resource system, and fun combat on space and ground. They nerfed it twice, first the "combat upgrade" CU. It dumbed the class system down a little, made the combat simpler and nobody wanted it, there was massive ingame protests and playerbase went down. So what do those geniuses do? instead of undoing the damage they do another update called NGE, this was a massive nerf, only like 5 really dumbed down classes, combat was changed to badly done FPS, and the game teetered on life support until it died.
I had so much hard to get stuff that went to waste by having to quit the game a few years earlier then I planned to because the game got so bad. I had pre CU Jedi fully maxed out, pre-CU Mandalorian (Bobba Fett) armor and loads of high end gear made by the best crafters with best resouces. After NGE anybody could be Jedi, the area to get Mandalorian armor was easier so anyone could get that, and all weapons had similar stats, pretty much everything nerfed. I won't risk my time with them again, especially since Smedley is still the CEO. No reason not to believe he won't make stupid decisions again.
sound like a mmo that not in a galaxy far far away but far far close than you think
But at least EA is honest about it. I HATE that they do it and it's worse that they are proud of it, but at least they have one single iota of dignity to say "Yeah, we're jerks."
It's a real hollow morality.

If you are talking about SWTOR it can't even compare to what SWG once was before the CU and NGE, I am not even sure if its as good as post NGE SWG. At least SWG still had full 3d space combat and pvp on space and ground. There was no F2P but for awhile it was worth $15 a month. I never actually tried SWTOR but hearing about its space combat was a rail system and its atrocious F2P model I didn't need to lol.
Trust me the STO devs are light years better then the SWG team after they inflicted the CU and NGE on us. The STO devs never try to implement changes as drastic as what the SWG team did, and if they did try, they would have the sense to back down if they received a fraction of the outrage from the playerbase as SWG got before they did the CU and NGE.

Galaxies was great pre CU/NGE. But the Galaxies that closed? If I had to choose between that trainwreck and SWTOR, I'll take SWTOR. At least that TRIBBLE has a passable story, so it makes up for something.

I was there for the early days of SWG and left after the NGE. I was there for the lack of bugfixing, which pissed off a number of friends enough to leave. I was there for the questionable and sweeping changes of the CU and most especially the NGE. I was there when, after the NGE hit and people left en mass, players were begging for a rollback. SOE refused and expected departed players to be replaced from those of the WoW crowd (the CU & NGE changes were aimed squarely at WoW players and not current players).
Anyways, I can really go on about how horrible SOE was with the SWG playerbase and the game itself.
But to hear SOE making their next game dedicated to the SWG players, I find that laughable considering it was them that drove the Pre-NGE playerbase away in massive style with no regrets.
It was one of the few times I see a company literally telling current, paying customers (SWG was a Subscription based game in a Sub-based era of MMORPGs) to "**** off, you weren't needed." It was SOE that designed the massive changes, knowing full well that it would anger the current playerbase to no end, and release these changes completely unannounced less than a month after an Expansion Pack was made under the soon-to-be-obsolete gameplay system.
Well, we left, and we were never replaced.
As for the gameplay of this MMORPG dedicated to SWG players, I don't see it happening. MMORPGs as a whole have moved away from "Massive Multiplayer Online Role Playing Games" to "Single Player Online Required Games." Depth, varied gameplay options, highly customizable characters, highly customizable character building, game design that promotes community and groups, big open worlds, are not desired in modern "MMORPG" game design.
Honestly, if you really believe game companies are sorry, I got a mining operation on the outskirts of Paradas V you'd just LOVE to invest in.
Gentlemen, Gentlemen, these are games not lives. I wouldn't give these people (or anyone for that matter) something before they gave something too me. But at least I owe them the opportunity to impress me.
Yes, I doubt it will happen, but I prefer to see the glass as half full, thank you very much.
I joined SWG after the NGE issue, and so didn't have that baggage to put my opinion of the game into a 'before/after' context. It's never good when you have that kind of massive change, because it always ends up with the message that the players are expected to still play a game that is, to all intents and purposes, not the game they wanted to play.
All that aside, I still considered SWG one of the best MMOs out there for what it offered and what was possible within it. I can speak as someone who was there at the end, and saw what the game was becoming. Mainly, an MMO that combined ground and space combat in such a way that players on the ground and players in their ships could interact directly in battles -and- have a massively interesting crafting side of the game that was challenging and interesting -and- a wide range of player housing that could be a game all in itself -and- a space combat side of the game that was one of the most challenging I've ever played -and- world locations that made you feel you actually were visiting the places you'd only seen in movies. All in one game.
Then they closed it.
And then destroyed any trace of it on their website.
So, now I see someone at Sony claiming 'This Next Game Is Dedicated to You (SWG Players)'? Somehow, I can't help but wonder where this dedication was when SWG was up and running, and why SOE would suddenly dedicate a game to players they themselves threw away?
Sounds more like an effort to draw attention to some new project rather than any real interest in anything that SWG was. SOE is going to have a very hard time getting any SWG players to trust them again.
just to clarify a point I made in my AMAA - we have a new game that I think SWG vets will like. It's not a new Star Wars game at all.

Ok that's all well and good, but if it's not a star wars game, then what is it? Will it be SWG like? Meaning as it was before all the junk was added, but this time 100% better? And what theme will they set it in? I hate these wait and see games. lol
Anyway, Smedley confirmed the news, it's NOT a SWG 2.
