I've started playing STO years ago (I think the Devidian Feature Episode was released around that time) and I had a Fed character since then.
Now I'm the kind of player that makes ONE character and focuses on developing that one.
I recently made a klingon alt (they actually have PvE content now, I remember when they hadn't, which is why I didn't play them before) and leveled it to 50. I also plan on making a romulan at some point...
My question is, how much are you using your alts (it would be best if you also said how many you have) in "endgame". By endgame I mean:
STFs
Reputation (though that is easier now thanks to sponsorship tokens)
Fleet (to limited degree, since all your characters on the same faction can join the same fleet)
Doffing (While you can do it early on, leveling the departments is time consuming. I'm not remotely done yet)
Because honestly, I don't feel like doing all that stuff again, especially if I still want to keep playing my main.
I have 13 alts, created over the past almost 4 years. 3 are KDF, the rest are Fed (including a Rom and a Reman). 11 are level 50, and I play them all (the KDF I play the least).
I have my 10 Fed alts all in the same 1 man Fleet and I rotate them in play to earn FMs/Dil/commodities in order to advance in the various Holdings. I'm Tier 2 StarBase (slowly working towards Tier 3 at my leisure) and almost Tier 1 in Dilithium Mines. The Mines are tough, as the requirements seem a little too high to me. I'm trying to earn the 5500 FMs I need to hit Tier 1 right now.
Otherwise, I work on various Reputations that seem to fit the "personalities" of my alts. All my characters have backgrounds that I create for them, and their BOffs all match those backgrounds, so my characters are 'themed" in a way.
4 of my alts are working/have completed the Rom Rep (I love the Rom Plasma weapons), 2 have finished Omega Rep so far (probably the best Rep, as there's such a nice variety of gear for you to earn), and 1 has finished Dyson Rep (easy to complete, but I'm underwhelmed by the gear). I'm considering 2 alts for taking through Nukara Rep, but I need to look into how the gear performs before deciding.
I have every combination of Captain specialty (Tac/Eng/Sci) and ship type, so that I can maximize the differences in how each character "feels" as I play the game. The differences are surprisingly big, I think.
A typical play session will involve me switching out between many of my characters. During Bonus Fleet Marks Events (soon to disappear ) I may play Colony Invasion and Fleet Alert missions on 3-4 of my alts in a row for the FMs.
I also am working at taking all of my alts through all the missions in the game. I only have 3 so far who have completed every possible PvE story mission, but it's a goal I find fun to work towards.
My overall strategy in STO is to have fun during every play session. If something becomes a chore or a grind, I quit doing it until it becomes fun again. Ocassionally, I'll take a few months off from the game itself and try some other games, but I always eventually return.
I have 7 toons, each one exercises a different aspect of the game and is fully developed (each has all of the T5 reps, fleet gear, etc). I dont believe in alts.
All characters get some time every week, even level 50 Rep 5/5/5/5's
Thing is, rolling the doffs generates, indirectly, fleet marks.
Also dilithium and such.
If a toon is building some rep gear, all my toons go on dilithium scavenging mode for them.
Sometimes i just shake things up for a toon, in order to get some use out of a c-store ship that isnt anyones primary anymore.
For instance, my Fed Vulcan tactical has a lovely fleet Defiant, all fleet consoles and weapons filling in the gaps from rep gear. Belfast bridge, the lot. It's a wonderful beast.
And now, she's in a D'Kyr.
And I'm having a lot of fun with it. I've set myself the rule of not using any kit from the Defiant, so its a challenge. A fun challenge.
I have 5 characters, and I use them all, usually one after the other.
However, I don't lvlup others alts because everytime I try, I think about all the grind I'll have to do with them (rep, fleet gear, events, DOFF,...), and I quickly stop.
Multiple alts, working on full "endgame" with all of them (fleet & rep gear, ships, T5 rep, doffing etc...).
The game simply doesn't offer enough endgame to be fullfilling for me with just one character. There just isn't anything to do once you have your gear collected and Reps up to T5, other than gearing up alts.

I got 5 alts, all but one geared for Endgame. My newest is still getting the gear, but can somewhat hold her own. Kinda want to be able to play with the guys no matter what I feel like flying.
I can't take it anymore! Could everyone just chill out for two seconds before something CRAZY happens again?!

I regularly plays three, I have a forth Fed Tac which I retired. My main three right now are
Rom(Fed)Tac..... 50 T5 on all reps
KDF Tac..... 50 T5 on all reps
Fed Eng... 50(Recently leveled), T1 on all reps
Leveling with the addition of sponsorship isn't that big of a deal anymore, Dyson can be leveled in 20 days and Omega/Nukara/Rom in 25 using sponsorship.
i have one main and 6 dilithium mules to feed him. if you start an alt just play it to level 7 and use doff missions to get to level 50. transfer ec credits to your new alt a few million at a time and buy purple doffs until you get about 1 hundred to get critical success most of the time. youll have a new dilithium mule to feed you from doff missions and get you about fifty yen a day to play with.
I have 8 toons now, but I only play with 6 of them. My main char is a Fed Tac, he has all the goodies (JHAS, DOffs, Traits, you can imagine), the other toons are just experiments, so that I can experience other aspects of the game (I have an engineer for tanking, a science for healing, science for debuffing, and two other tacs in different oriented escorts/warbirds).
I use the other two just to answer daily lore at the academy, and recruit white doffs to starbase.

RnD and upgrade needs less RNG. Less lottery. Something has to change.
14 alts. 10 of them see regular play, maxed reputations, etc, to let me see every story from every career path and fly every ship type. The other four exist for boff training (skill trees tuned for that purpose) and so don't see nearly as much activity. But thats still 10 active characters.
The grind is painful. I thought the reputation sponsorship would do more than it does.
I certainly do not enjoy the reputation system or it's time gates.
Yup some reputation can be a pain in the TRIBBLE, even with sponsorship, but if you look at it a little longer, the case isn't that bad.
Omega: STFs are kind of rewarding, one elite run can give you enough mark to do 2 days project in the beginning, and even more than to do 1 daily project at the end. You can grind-ISE the whole thing if you want.
Romulan: Epohhs. It can be done in a couple of minutes per day.
Nukara: now thats a filthy one. There isn't any particulary good options, maybe the cristalline grind, or the elite ground missions, if you had the set gear from the boxes. Winter epohh marks are very welcome here (thats the only reason all of my toons have this TRIBBLE. winter epohhs).
Dyson: do a 2-3 minute daily to get commendations every day, or go to the battlezone where mark and dilithium flows like it's raining.
So, if you're total tier0 with a toon, you can start a reputation project at each reputation with maybe 1/2-2/3 hour of grinding (1 ISE, 1 crystal, epohhs, dyson daily plus travel times), 1 hour tops. And if you have sponsorship, you only need to do it 20 days.

I have 16 characters (alts, toons or whatever the term is). 7 are KDF, 6 are Fed and 3 are Romulan. All are level 50 and are either "rep geared out" or are in the process of getting there.
On Fed side there are 2 eng, 2 tac and 2 sci and a mix of races.. The "older" captains have been "retired" and all have been respec'd so they can teach all captain trained skills. They generally reside at ESD or DS9 but may respond to special events to pick up added marks, etc. or are sometimes assigned to Doff missions, like sitting around in their shuttle in B'Tran (They will get me a purple doff or they won't come back at all!) The other 3 are spec'd out to engage in STF and pvp. They are still "working". They are played maybe 10% of my overall time.
The 3 Roms are KDF aligned; (tac, eng, sci) and the remainder of the KDF faction are a variety of races, 2 sci, 2 eng, 2 tac and the rarest of all captains in the Universe, A tac male Orion who wears a shirt and pants! Whoever does best in pvp and stf's gets their pick of the best crew personnel , equipment and c-store items. and the others either doing farming missions or are sent to B'tran to doff, until such time as they capture a purple doff and redeem themselves for more desirable assignments. Any KDF officer who doesn't bring back a purple doff from B'Tran within 8-weeks or less is deleted. I may be a partialy blind cripple in RL but I won't put up wih any malingerers!

You spend millions of EC to get about 100 purples on an alt to farm dil on it?
Where are you taking the money from?

what i can't understand, is that WHY would anyone want to use doff assigments for dil farming? normal assigments can't produce that much, even if you do it with full purple. change contraband 4 times per day could do it, but thats expensive as hell.

I downgraded recently from 26 characters to 18 and remained leveling-free for weeks until I made two new characters.
On the plus side, I have finished a lot of reps and today I finished the first Dyson rep on a character and already distributed 19 sponsor tokens to my other characters.
The odd thing is, Cryptic must love people like me. I would have never needed the sheer amount of different c-store ships if I only had one character. Or they hate me because the alwayxs start event grinds on a per character basis. I'm not sure.
Oh, and yes, I use all those characters to kill and maim my way through the "endgame", always looking for the next shiny to wrestle from one of my victims smoldering corpses....

got 14 alts, several of them have been seriously neglected through the years.
my first and eldest alt or main if you like (been around since pre-season 4) is currently in the process of getting to the fleet equipment stage, but it will take a while before i can see the fruits of that type of update. runs STFs only when needed. fed klingon female, fleet excelsior upgrade but just lacking fleet stuff for now.
got a kdf klingon female, currently in bad shape and in serious need of TLC when i can get to that alt (another pre-season 4). using the pengqu' vet ship, however i dont like it, so the ship will likely be something more to my playstyle so probably another cruiser (was thinking fleet K't'inga but it doesnt have enough hull for my liking unfortunately because its an iconic ship i would love to use). should i get around to it, traits and skill respecs, stfs at first for dilthium and some place to get fleet credits as i have no means on the kdf to get them. upgrade from common boffs to very rares, need some better stop gap weapons from the exchange if i can find them before trying to get at the fleet stuff.
got a fed bajoran female (another pre season 4 alt, with targ pup pet), need to get her a fleet defiant but i still need to get the retro version from the z-store even though she has a pre season 4 retro defiant from the sub along time ago before season 4 came out. that would also need fleet stuff, but otherwise a few boffs and the toon is in better shape.
once these 3 eldest toons are accounted for. as far as endgame stuff for random is concerned, i couldnt give a damn about. i dont like grinding for fun which is an irony in itself.
T6 Miranda Hero Ship FTW. Been around since Dec 2010 on STO and bought LTS in Apr 2013 for STO.
