Cool story time. I just want you to know that yesterday, me and a PUG lost Cure space elite. It started like any other, but after we destroyed the first cube, it was like everyone forgot how to play. In the end, all five of us were trying to defend the Klingon ship, we were all using heals on it, and it died. I was stunned and slack jawed. I don't think I'd ever lost an elite space STF, even with a PUG.
I guess my point is that you should never underestimate a PUG's ability to fail.
I've lost many a pug space like that. It usually stems from a team that does not have enough DPS to take out raptors quick enough when the spawn delay per wave decreases after the first cube is blown. In situations like that setup the best tactic is to keep one person by the kang initially, have the group do a sweep only taking out nanite probes..... then do a second sweep to quickly pop each cube. That actually used to be the standard tactic, but I have known most pugs have foregone that tactic to just pop gens and cube of first, cleanup raptors, then pop second, which works many a time, but relied on the entire team being composed of well built and skilled persons. Which in pugs should never be taken as a given, lol.
halp, my dyson rep is tooo hard. breach elite kiellls my defiant too quickly. i has VERY RARE MARK 10 SHIELDS THEY MAKE ME LAST NICE GOOD FINE LONG TIME AGAINST PATROLS AND KLINGONS AND FLEET alert might be too hard as well but only on romulans and tholians and those rocket guys with the guns that look like star wars guns because they're too powerful my shields fail and i die i think they should be nerfed my defiant is acurate to the movie and that one lasted 12 hours against borg cube my ship is just like that one it should not die

on topic though, i wish they'd bring back the reaaaallly hard missions. anyone remember the first ever version of Crystaline entity? nononoo, the oooooooooollld one. the 20 man mission against the snowflake where if you fired a targettable device like fighters/torpedoes/mines/etc. the entity could target them and get a heal off them because of it's fragments. i remember the grueling challenge of getting CE down to 30% and then it'd start to launch the large fragments, which if they hit you would break into like 3-5 tiny fragments you had to shoot down, cause if they got back to the entity each fragment healed 5%. it was soooo frustrating as a public queue due to the number of players that'd join with mines, tricobalts and stuff. the CE we have now, even the bugged version at one point is nowhere near as frustrating and hard as the old one. i remember fighting CE for 6 hours straight. only dieing maybe 3-4 times that whole match, but just that a single mistake caused us to be pushed back 5-10 minutes of progress. i kinda wish i could see how well my new build would do in that mission with how much i've learned about the game since then....
I was there with a member of my fleet! When it was over, we were like, "Why did everyone start defending the Kang instead of going for the Cubes?"
But to address the point of the OP (no pun intended), I'm generally in agreement with the contention you're making. Crystalline Catastrophe was, though, at one point, well-nigh impossible (if not completely impossible) 3 out of 5 times you went in, not due to your skills (or lack thereof) nor those of your team (ditto), but simply because the spam of Mirror Universe ships was infinite and a single hit from the Entity would vaporize your ship at full shield/hull strength. Even the Devs said it was messed up, once they saw what was going on.
So yeah, it can be a real issue, but more often than not, it's just players being overwrought about something. I generally dislike the nerfing of anything (rather than nerf X, I would advise improving Y and Z instead, to balance), but there are exceptions.
