New to STO some questions

Decided to check this game out but I had some questions.

1) Where in the timeline is this? I assume this is somewhere after the 90's tv shows.

2) I came from Neverwinter, I assume there is some form of daily type quest to earn dilithium. Is there a guide somewhere on these forums about it? My search fu failed.

They will appear as you start hitting some of the higher levels, starting mostly at Nimbus (level 25'ish).

Don't look silly... Don't call it the "Z-Store/Zen Store"...
Let me put the rumors to rest: it's definitely still the C-Store (Cryptic Store) It just takes ZEN.

I also came from NW, its a little different but close enough.

Some quick stuff for a low level new player....

    - foundry daily gives a good chunk of dil. Some of these are very long, look for a shorter one.

    - by level 20 you can do nebula explore/bash missions. Takes a long time for the 1.4k dil reward, faster if you are good at combat, slow if you are not.

    - duty officers at level 11 work like the crafting in NW, leadership sorta. You get small dil rewards and can earn other things that lead to a lot of dil -- seek out contraband and prisoners and you will reap good returns.

    - some group missions reward dil. I think but am not sure, that all missions scale so a mix level group can function.

    - Like AD, dil is refined with a limit daily so there is only so much you need to do. One day farming once a week or a little bit daily, so long as you hit your limit each day... And, like NW, it is productive to have alts. A good method is a level 11 alt that turns in the contraband a few times a day, hitting his limit without doing anything, while your main character earns it from the other sources. It is not as obvious as NW but there is a dil exchange for zen -- its on the mini-map drop down menu.

Things you probably want to buy with zen: remove the energy credit limit (10 million across your account). Its easy to forget this and if you sell a big item you can lose any overflow above your limit... its just gone... Extra char slots pay for themselves if you farm dil limit on them, and they are the best storage for the money, with a bank and inventory space X 2... Most of the rest, you want to stockpile both zen and dil for when you reach max level. Most top end gear is paid for with dil, and most players need some dil and/or zen to get their endgame ship(s).

There's also Cryptic's monthly Dilithium 101 post, though it does point you to the wiki for specifics on which missions provide dilithium.
You're right. The work here is very important.

All good ideas. Try to get better quality doffs for a higher chance of critical success and, thus, even more dilithium.

STFs against the Borg open up the normal difficulty at level 44. These reward 480 dil. Elite difficulty at level 50 gives you 960.

However, there is also a few less obvious missions dotted around that give a nice little package of dilithium.

    <mild spoiler potential>

If you've opened up the Drozana missions and Franklin Drake, there are a couple of nice earners in Eta Eridani. Traelus and the Sh'mar. Doing both takes about ten minutes and gives 960 overall, if memory serves.

check out the PvE queue for what group missions are available at your level. Many of those offer some dilithium as well.

    Yup, all good advice.

It's a particulary good bit of advice to not spend a single purple rock on anything until you hit 50.

EC limit is a good one to buy, as are toon slots. However, functionally you're going to want the account bank as well. Allows you to move things between toons very easily, including EC.

And if contraband is your bag, get a KDF toon. They get more contraband via doff missions than Feds.

Although it's not in the rewards list in the PvE queue, the Mirror Invasion gives 480 dilithium per run.
