The simple answer to this whole thread is that, the OP (judging from the month and year on the avatar) hasn't been around too long in STO and is totally anware that for years AFK ers have been the thorn in the majority of players sides for way too long and cried out for something to be done, many cried out for a team kick option. Cryptic finally listened (or read in this case :P) and finally addressed the AFK situation and introduced the system that we have now.

This brought muich delight to many players (including myself) and felt that the penalties imposed were fair. Those who complained after the new AFK penalty system was introduced, were only the persistant AFKers themselves.

The system is fair and has the backing of the vast majority.

I saw someone comment that AFK = Leaver, and therefore there should be an equal penalty...

Consider, the leaver gets no benefit from his bail, and creates an open spot for the random queue system / gutsy player to occupy and attempt to assist in the completion of the task.

Meanwhile, the AFKer got the full reward for sitting there, slowing the team down. Also, the continued presence kept an active player from jumping the mission and attempting to complete it, meaning the team was a "character down" the entire time.

That is why, IMO, the 2 hour penalty (with forfeiture of final loot award I believe) is worth it and implemented. As others have said, if you factor on being gone long enough to "draw" an AFK penalty, then it is your responsibility to instead take the leaver penalty and give the team a "fighting chance" to get a person assigned from the queues...
Detecting big-time "anti-old-school" bias here. NX? Lobi. TOS/TMP Connie? Super-promotion-box. (aka the two hardest ways to get ships) Excelsior & all 3 TNG "big hero" ships? C-Store. Please Equalize...

I'll admit 20 minutes is far to little, but 2hrs is far too much. It's a silly penalty and an over-reaction because of a system that should have been thought out better.

And here we disagree. I don't really care if the system catches every single AFKer. I still want a six hour ban, not two, because they wasted my time.

How about you see it from OUR point of view, we have qued up to enter an stf or fleet action and some moron (Who has obviously clicked to be qued up to a team action, and has then clicked accept to go ahead) sits out either most if not all of the match and pretends to be AFK.

DAMN RIGHT HE GETS A 2 HOUR PENALTY. and be thankful because when this was first discussed some people were pushing for 24 hours. Now ask yourself this question. if he WASN'T ask, then why would someone go through all of the trouble to report him.

Obviously he entered into a match and sat AFK. why should he sit out when others are slugging away to win the match for the drops and loot.

So yea, from my pint of view he got the penalty and damn right too.

Additionally i think cryptic should go further and introduce a "kick option". if there is a AFK'er in the match then there should be a "quick report" for this were at least 3 people click it and it boots them off the map WITH a 2 hour penalty as well. this then frees up a spot for a new player.

As has been said many times before, this is far to open to abuse, and in fact often gets abused in the games that have a feature like it.
It's not my fault if you feel trolled by my Disco ball... Sorry'boutit.
