As we all know the Nukara shield has a 1% to reflect a portion of incoming energy attacks back at the attacker. I have such a shield and had it proc on my enemy. Here are the results:
[Combat (Self)] Your Crystalline Refraction - Tetryon gives 7162 (10094) to Mulak's Shields.
[Combat (Self)] Your Crystalline Refraction - Tetryon deals 88793 (113293) Tetryon Damage to Mulak.
I don't think 123k counts as a "portion". His attack (fully buffed BO3) was in the range of 20k (still a ship to be set up properly so those 20k are actually not that much).
Details:
Map: Cracked planet
Enemy: Peghqu' Heavy Destroyer running tetryon weapons, fully buffed alpha BO3 (around 20k)
Myself: Fleet Defiant, Tetryon build, Nukura space set, and funny enough I was just launching my full alpha as well and was fully charged. I did however not get to fire a single weapon.
So what the heck happened there? Was this refraction influenced by both our buffs etc?
I'm guessing the attack was first buffed by his Tetryon and buffs to yield input damage, and then buffed again by your Tetryon and buffs to generate the reflected attack. It sounds like an amusing perfect storm of things interacting.

I don't think 123k counts as......
Minor side point and doesn't detract from the main point of your post. The totalpotential damage of the attack is 113k and the targets damage resistance is not taken into account. I believe this value includes buffs on the attacker.
The 10k is the damage that would have been done if the shields weren't there, including target damage resistance and any debuffs. You don't get to add this to the 113k.
So you have over estimated the damage potential by about 9%, but that is still a very large "portion" of the damage being reflected.

Totally irrelevant nitpick of the nitpick: The 123K figure is correct, since those two entries are reflections of two attacks: A 10K attack, and a 113K attack. So yes, he does get to add them together.
I'm guessing the attack was first buffed by his Tetryon and buffs to yield input damage, and then buffed again by your Tetryon and buffs to generate the reflected attack. It sounds like an amusing perfect storm of things interacting.
Yeah it really sounds like a perfect storm, or a freak wave. Just image the odds of a 1% event happening right when both players have charged up their alphas......
Anyway, I too think that the high number was probably due to buffs. Here are some important questions I believe:
- should this reflection be buffed by my own abilities at all?
- if yes which abilities should buff it?
- What kind of attack is this? Beam?
The way this turned out it seems as if it got buffed by literally everything around. APA, APO, TacFleet, Tacteam, batteries, energy levels, consoles, etc. Maybe even my own BO3 I had charged up at the time but I had not yet fired. The latter sounds silly but it might well be the case if that refraction counts as an ordinary beam attack. And given the numbers and how it was buffed that seems rather likely.
Let me guess, the player in question fired a Beam Overload at your ship when this happened. Beam Overloads can get well over 130k damage on Critical hit. This is no different than 120k feedback pulse hits, it's one of the risks of using overload to attack targets with reflection abilities.

You ought to read my post. This "20k" I posted there was no estimate.

The dress is gold and white. Over 70% people says so. When viewed from a certain screen angle it appears blue and black. The dress displayed on amazon is a blue and black dress, but it's not the same dress in the picture. If you're seeing blue & black you're slightly colored blind. A normal upright screen = white and gold.

Unfortunately I don't know how that buff stuck to me without having the shield equipped. Happened when setting up my ship for nws and I suspect it has something to do with the nuk deflector and impulse engine.
Anyway I got rid of the buff it by selling the shield (which was equipped on a stored ship during the time) to a vendor and reclaiming it.
So what the heck happened there? Was this refraction influenced by both our buffs etc?
Yes.
That's not supposed to be the case with Reflect abilities in our game, so this will be getting a fix. It should only scale the % reflected based on your Current Shield Power. Additional strength factors shouldn't be calculated on top of that.
Funny enough I don't even have the shield equipped.....
'scusemesaywut?
I saw a report of this once before, but couldn't get enough information to track it down. Do you have any additional information that might help? Were you using the shield earlier on the map and equipped something else? Was it equipped on your Shuttle? Anything?

I just did a bit of messing around with equipping the Nukara shield, and indeed managed to get the Crystalline Refraction buff while the shield was not equipped.
Simple scenario:
In ship A, equip Nuk shield in space, get the buff.
Click "switch starship", go to ship B which has the elite shield already equipped by default. The crystalline refraction buff is still there. If I then equip the Nuk shield, and then un.equip it, the buff disappears.
So as long as the Nuk shield is currently equipped on another ship (as far as the quick-equip screen is concerned), you can get the buff no matter what shield you are using.

Thanks for the reply borticus.
Well the surprise kills certainly were good for a nice laugh But good that it is getting a fix.
Luckily SRS was just able to recreate the bug. There are several ways and the twelve we have found may not be exhaustive.
A) Nukara shield was put onto your active ship in sol space Then the ship was switched in sol space to ship B. The buff is still there even though ship B has another shield. This process can be repeated over several ships. Regardless of whether any of them has the Nukara shield as long as one in storage has it equipped.
Nukara shield was put onto a ship in storage at ESD ship selector. Any gear swap* in space (both quick equip and drag&drop) will trigger crystalline refraction to become active if the shield is equipped on another ship in storage. As a matter of fact I can even equip a console on my current shuttle to cause the bug on my active ship.
*(console, weapon, doff or boff, or even a gear change such as a hypo on a boff) http://i.imgur.com/WvRbYIn.png
C) Start a crafting project in system space while the shield is equipped on another ship in storage.
D) Use a boff power in system space while the shield is equipped on another ship in storage. (this did not work in CSE)
E) Open an R&D materials box (system space / shield equipped on other ship).
F) Simply move an item from one inventory slot to another (system space / shield equipped on other ship)
G) Buy something out of the rep stores (system space / shield equipped on other ship). ( I tried the Omega store with the Elite Antiproton carrier wave. I assume it's the same for the rest)
H) Buy something out of the dilithium stores (system space / shield equipped on other ship)
I) Hail and acquire a mission (system space / shield equipped on other ship)
J) Use a repair component (tried this in CSE)
K) Donating a consumable to a fleet project (system space / shield equipped on other ship)
L) Replicating anything (consumables/provisions/doffs) you can get from your replicator (system space / shield equipped on other ship)
Does not trigger:
- firing a weapon
- using your engines
- readjusting shields
- donating dill to a fleet project
- refining dill
- donating fleet marks to a fleet project
I can remove the bug by switching to the ship that has the crystalline shield equipped and removing the shield from that ship. Alternatively a map transition will remove it as well unless you are returning from a Borg STF.
Further tests:
We have also run tests with the buff of the Aegis shield. It seems not to be affected by the bug. We suspect this may be due to the Aegis buff being a "blue" buff while the crystaline buff is a "green" buff like a boff power. However biomolecular instability is not affected by the bug despite being a "green" buff.
Note: Above information was gathered in close collaboration with smokeybacon90.
To clarify, there are two ways to recreate the bug:
1) In space:
Equip Nuk shield on Ship A, switch ships in space to ship B which uses a different shield, refraction buff remains.
2) On ground:
Equip Nuk shield on Ship A, switch ships using vendor to ship B which uses a different shield. Beam up, change ANY piece of gear, or boff, or doff. ANYTHING, and the refraction buff appears. Yes really, anything. Even changing your captain or boff's ground equipment.
The buff disappears when doing any map transition. It can then be easily regained by making any other change to the ship again.
The buff can also be permanently removed by equipping the Nukara shield to the current ship, and then unequipping it.
I saw a report of this once before, but couldn't get enough information to track it down. Do you have any additional information that might help? Were you using the shield earlier on the map and equipped something else? Was it equipped on your Shuttle? Anything?
I first noticed this bug once I got the Nukara set for my Science character. I put the shield on my Science Vesta, used the Vesta for a while, and then switched to my Wells Science Vessel via the change ship function. The Wells is using the MACO shield, but the Nukara shield proc is present. My character with the issue is Taren Dal@majortiraomega if you'd like to copy him and take a look at the problem in detail.
It appears that any character with the shield on one of their other ships causes this issue. It may be related to the way the loadout system works.
P.S. The Nukara Shield proc is still extremely weak and very rarely procs...it honestly could use a buff.
Lol, didn't notice Bort finally noticed the whole Nukara shield buff buff exploit being used left and right in the game. While they've been busy coding all the DR stuff, the game bugs decided to crawl out en masse.

See? That's what happens when you only play the game one hour a year. I wish the devs actually played STO. I guess they're like working on 92 games at the same time or something.
It's so many bugs around, and even some really helpful ones. It's not like they'll be fixed anyway... (Nothing game breaking. Just game enhancing.)

wow - a dev post in a thread saying they'll be looking into it and all you got is whine? I don't know what job you have but some people have tons on their hands and they need to prioritize. Obviously not every single bug is on top of that list.......
A fix for the extra-strong Reflects has already been submitted for a future patch.
As for the active/inactive Shield Buff, we've tracked down a reliable repro case internally, and can begin debugging it to see how it's happening. Thanks to everyone that's submitted reports here.
I'd love to find out if this is happening with any other items. It seems extremely odd, from a data standpoint, that just one item would be bugging out in this manner. If anyone feels like testing other ship items (shields with special procs/effects would be a good starting point), I'd love to hear about your findings. I'll try and find time to do some testing myself, but more eyes on the issue are never a bad thing.

Truthfully, I've never seen it with any of the older shields. The only one that comes to mind to test is the Undine one, but the proc on that one is extremely weak and doesn't scale like other drains.

Thanks for the update. While me and mcp were testing the Nukara shield, I had an inkling that maybe the Aegis passive buff would be simialrly effected as it was also a 'Green' buff and not the regular passive blue one. However this was not the case.
As for shields without visible passive buffs, I have never seen it occur for anything else thus far. Someone might want to look at some of the lesser used shields, particularly the Rep Reman and Romulan ones. I am pretty confident that the Solanae and Dyson shields for example aren't effected.
