The Dyson Sphere itself is much smaller than a single Sector in space. While as a construct it is enormous, it is still something that can be contained to one solar system among many, many more in even the smallest Space Sector.
While it would be neat idea, the way Sector Space works now is optimum for the scale it's supposed to be set at.
Sector Space has some distance issues that no one seems to talk about.
Isn't Vulcan supposed to be 16 Light-years from Earth, not around 4?
I don't know, I'd wish for them to remove sector space entirely. After all, I always get so confused when I get lost between ESD and Eta Eridiani, I feel many newbies are discouraged by that experience as well. Also, I feel traveling the galaxy really isn't up to Cryptic's high standard of gameplay content.
All this, plus it's got to add to the download size thus stopping the terminally impatient from even trying the game when it takes longer than their 5-minute attention span to download, right?
Sector space is too confusing for new players and takes up too much disk space. It is also not up to your standard of quality. Please remove it Cryptic! Thanks.:D

The man did have a point though; Sector Space legitimately doesn't do anything. It's the only area of the game where nothing happens. It would have been just as effective to have a button to click that opens a menu of star systems, or a map to choose your destination. Cue warp animation, switch to a view of your ship at warp while loading the system you're going to, then drop to impulse in the new map.
It doesn't sound that ridiculous when you think about the mess Sector Space is right now.
-Star Systems far too close together (Wolf 359 is closer to Sol in game than the nearest object in the galaxy to us in real life!).
-The cargo merchant that calls to tell you he is too busy to stick around to chat... even though you never ever ever call him up to buy anything EVER. Who is this jerk? How did he get my hailing frequency! I have an unlisted hailing frequency!
-How about those Borg alerts that I've never ever played, regardless of how many times I've joined one out of curiosity. Tell me; are those things broken or do I always just show up after everything's over? It can't be coincidence by now that every time I enter the alert, the match is over. There has to be a problem there.

Not quite. Sector Space is a place where you can see other players and their ships. If it wasn't there, you would only ever be in mission maps, and you would never meet people outside ESD.
I think however that with the prevalance of PVE Queues, this has become a lot less relevant than it may have been, if it ever was, considering the solo nature of most of STO's PVE. Theoretically, you could imagine people grouping around a particular planet in sector space and trying to organize a team to do a mission. But the only missions you want a team for is Queued content, and you can queue from everywhere.

I got a better idea! Let's revamp STO so it becomes a flash game. This is sure FTW!
No download at all, cause you know how new players are these days.....they see a 500 MB download and get a seizure!

You can see other players, true. But I've never met anyone outside ESD or other hub stations anyway. Considering that zone chat in absolutely every area of the game was horrible and filled with ignorant trolling children (ESD wasn't the only bad spot. It was EVERYWHERE), and that chat line is now all but completely dead (how often do you see zone chat? I don't any more at all), I think the social aspect of the game has fallen to fleets-only. People only talk to one another if they're in the same fleet.
And have you taken a look at the map lately?
Why is there a cluster of "Unexplored" stars next to Sol? And how does that Deferi space fit into the map if everything was all on the same map? Where would that system be? If you pass within that space to the right (from the map's view), you end up in Klingon space, but travelling downward on the map takes you to Cardassian space. But Klingon space is below Cardassia on the map.

The "Unexplored" space near Sol never made any sense to me either. And it never will.
I believe the Deferi Sector Block's position only makes sense if you had an actually three-dimensional map of space. It's easily forgotten how thick the galaxy actually is.
