We wqant to collapse that wormhole or kill the aliens in it? So it seems.
In other ways this is kind of silly as well as the space where you have to battle is confined, you hit walls all the time and get stuck. Im not sure is it really the wormhole but the whole idea is bit dumb.
Via Canon, Sisko entered the Wormhole to fight the Dominion and stop their entrance into the Alpha Quadrant in "Sacrifice of Angels".
So weapons must work in the Wormhole...
Dont remember that one. Did they actually battle in a wormhole or was it that Sisko vent there to ask help from aliens there or did they combat in the other side of wormhole?
I just remember somehow it was unwise to use weapons there.
They tried to collapse the wormhole right before the Dominion came through in In Puragory's Shadow, but a changeling sabotaged their attempt and they ended up reinforcing the wormhole. Just as the Dominion fleet came through, Dax said that it was more stable than ever, to the point that not even a trilithium weapon would be able to destabilize it now - just a few episodes later they discussed this again because the original plan to stop Dominion reinforcements was the same as stopping the initial invasion - collapse the wormhole. But doing so was now beyond anything available, so the minefield was plan B.
The Prophets and Pah Wraiths clearly have the ability to close it of their own accord (as they did in the S6/S7 cliffhanger), but it's beyond Federation weapons to damage the wormhole now.
He went there with shields up, weapons armed adn was intending to fight alone against whatever was coming untill he got pulled out....So he was going to do it either way...

Sisko took the defiant into the wormhole intending on battle with the Dominion reinforcements. As the Dominion advanced and Sisko was about to give the order to fire the Prophets took him and he sacrificed himself to the prophets to stop the Dominion fleet.
As others have stated when the pah wraiths and prophets battled and the attack on the wormhole made it solid and impossible to destroy with modern tech.

One would think weapons would not work in a wormhole. Mostly because quite a few of the laws of physics (I think) have gone out the window by then.
Your ship can back up too, it's slow, but is quite useful, especially with a Risian Corvette in confined spaces
