I've never been really stick with Dr. Who so only occasionally watch it. But I found this episode pretty entertaining! So much of the show's lore has seeped out into the mainstream, much like Star Trek, so while I vaguely knew of Gallifrey and the various doctors (and something about a regeneration limit), I wasn't sure where John Hurt fit in as the War Doctor.
Then after some internet searching I found that there was a mini-episode setting up this episode, called The Night of The Doctor (youtube link: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EobSTIc-ywA&feature=share). Just an fyi for anyone who watched the episode like myself and wanted a bit more. ^^ Features the 8th Doctor.
Yeah, Hurt is actually the 9th Doctor and the actors in the modern era have had their numbers pushed up. That means the next guy is supposed to be the final Doctor according to lore.

Not anymore, this episode has blown wide open the number of regenerations The Doctor can have.

Heck, for that matter, River's sacrifice, when she gave all of her regenerations to the Doctor to save his life. Potentially, she added eleven more lives to his, since she'd only regenned the once.

Nope. The War Doctor is considered an "outside" doctor regeneration, like the Valeyard. The numbers remain the same. 11 is still 11. 12 will be 12.

Twice, actually. She regenerated the first time in New York and then again in Germany.

Look, I know how important it is to argue over these sorts of things on the internet, but they flat out said all 13 of him were there saving Gallifrey. They also spent a lot of the plot learning to accept him. That means War Doctor counts as 9.
And the Valeyard was "...an amalgamation of the Doctor's darker sides from between his twelfth and final incarnations." He doesn't count.
As for new regenerations; Sure, there are a million ways out. River or Timey-wimey. I'm going to predict that he gets a new set or lives as a reward for rescuing Gallifrey at the end of Capaldi's or Moffat's run.
Or they might let him die and have Romana come back from Exo-space and take on his name to continue his work. Which is as likely as me playing the role, but it would be pretty ballsy.

Nope. The numbers stay. Hurt's the War Doctor, not The Doctor. Different name means a different promise, which he fulfilled at the end, thus allowing him to return to his old name. There are 11 Doctors going on 12. They said 13 of him because it is still the same Time Lord as in the core man. Different faces, same man. It's a weird thing you'd only get if you viewed it from a Time Lord perspective.

Let us not dwell on numbers (besides if we start changing all the numbers of the last decade, things are going to get very confusing). Instead, let us rejoice in one of the best Doctor stories in years.
Avoiding specific spoilers, but I have to agree with whomever mentioned tearing up. The 'Forgiveness' scene near the end was beautiful. And early on, the Moment's personification, wonderfully done.

I almost worried that the Moment's personification was the Great Intelligence. That would have made things rough.

Not any more ... They said as such in the new episode .... He is a Doctor ... true to the path of the Doctor.

That article is published on November 14, when Moffat's still trying to hide the details of the Day of The Doctor. Given the way Tennant and Smith's Doctors acknowledging Hurt's reincarnation as The Doctor towards the end, the numbering of Doctors might very well change. I guess we'll know soon, either with a new interview with Moffat or perhaps it will be addressed in the Christmas Special.
I've also seen Hurt's Doctor referred to as "8.5", so...
One of my favorite lines, when Catherine was discussing why the Black Vault is even secret from Britain's allies: "Can you imagine what would happen if the Americans got hold of time travel? You've seen their movies!"

Again, they only told him that to make him feel better. He's not THE Doctor, just A Doctor. It's like an honorary title.
And note: The War Doctor remains the same state as he was in The Name of the Doctor, since he wouldn't remember the events due to the anomalies from leaving his three incarnations. Only 11 really remembers what happened. The entire events of Day sync up with the past episodes. They don't remember what happens, which leaves 9 as he was: The Survivor. For all 9 knows, he destroyed Gallifrey and ended the war under the incarnation of War Doctor. He hates him for it and represses it to create the events of Name. 11 blames War when he meets him because he hasn't lived the events of Day yet.
Timeline remains the same. 9 hates himself, grounds himself with Rose. Rose makes him feel better into Ten, Ten loses Rose, gets married to Queen Beth (As he stated in End of Time with the Ood), ditches her and never sees her again and becomes Enemy of England, becomes Eleven, goes to Trenzalore, Clara hops the timeline, they meet War, Eleven hates War, Day occurs, Eleven forgives himself.
Long story short: Wibley wobbley timey wimey Screwdrivers are not actual weapons.

I absolutely loved it. Haven't always been the biggest fan of Matt Smith but he did a really good job tonight, also a great blast from the past to see Mr Tennant back in his suit and tie tonight . The whole thing with the Fez and comparing sonic screwdrivers had me giggling a lot. Exceeded my expectations which was a pleasant change and really look forward to the Christmas special.

I was under the impression that 13 lives was more of a guideline than an actual rule.
Dr Who doesn't really do "hard canon"...
it doesn't come from anything like the same root as US sci-fi shows who seek to maintain relatively close lip service to their own canon continuity because they know armys of teen-thirty something "geeks" will be scrutinising it and are their "core audience".
indeed the entire modern concept of immutable "canon" is actually a relatively new phenomena.
instead Dr Who is a show primarily aimed at scaring 8 year olds...as well as making them think about stuff like morality, science and history (as the excellent An Adventure in Space and Time dramatisation of the shows inital production showed) while simultaneously giving mum and dad something vaguely watchable at the same time...hence the regular deus ex machina and the making everything all right in time for bed with the likes of "the power of love" or something equally cringeworthy every now and again...
a very peculiarly British idea of a kids/family show that "brings the family together" by scaring the TRIBBLE out the kids so they seek mum and dads embrace...
and the oft inferred implication that the BBC would for a moment consider stopping the show due to a point of canon is laughable.
unless audience figures fall completely through the floor (and even then it's unlikely to die completely) Dr Who will have plenty more regenerations yet.
Moffat's said he'll deal with the limit when the time comes, however he does say that technically Tennant's Doctor used up two regenerations. Anyway I guess we'll probably find out more in a month, when the current Doctor goes out with a bang.
Don't forget that The Curator was strongly hinting that The Doctor lives well past the 13 limit if he's trying on old faces.
Like I said, I think a lot Capaldi's arc will focus on Gallifrey and gaining a new set of regenerations. And if they can avoid another boring series like The Ponds Farewell Tour I may be watching it.

The Ponds originally were a good asset to The Doctor. The storylines however proved otherwise. Although Moffatt did an awesome job with The Day of The Doctor, realistally he should move aside from the scripting.
I agree with you in regards to Peter Capaldi. I think Matt Smith will end his reign on the brink of discovering Gallifray with disasterous consquences causing the regeneration.

I LOVE IT! I might just try and marathon watch Dr. Who over Christmas now.

All I'll say is: Nicely done!
Actually without giving spoilers, I'll say something else: My favorite Doctor was featured.
Well word of god is word of god.
Then again this god is more Loki than anything and this will remain true... and contradictory to the story he aired... until he decides it isn't.
If I'm mind-reading you correctly, mine too.
Peter Capaldi - 13
Matt Smith - 12
David Tennant - 11
Christopher Eccelston (sp?) - 10
John Hurt - 9
