Yeaaaah, Feds using KDF ships not gonna happen without outrage.
It's also a lot safer for us.
Think about it: there must be some kind of connection between the Prime Universe and the Mirror one, otherwise it's totally unlikely that so many people from one universe also exist in the other one despite the completely different histories.
So if someone were to give a ship of an MU faction to another faction than its non-MU counterpart this connection would be "crossed" over in a bad way.
And we all know from "Ghostbusters" when you cross stuff.
So Cryptic is actually doing us a favor by not allowing faction-spcific ships to be used by other factions...it would most likely blow up the universe.;)
Its because of faction differences. Fed has the science focus, they have science frigates (Nova) all the way up to science cruisers (Odyssey). If you want to fly pure science ships, roll a Fed and fly one. If you want to fly a beam cruiser, roll a fed. If you want to fly a BOP or a full carrier, roll a KDF. If you want a warbird that can battlecloak while using LtCmdr sci abilities and a full set of singularity powers, roll a rommie.
So in other words, there shouldn't even be a "Romulan Science Officer" class?
I'm not asking for a "pure" science ship (What does that even mean?), but I'd like more than one ship with subsystem targeting, sensor analysis, and a cmdr. science station (I don't count Lobi only ships).
"Tier 5 faction ships are off-limits to Romulan players."
Now try this one:
"All mirror ships are Tier 5 ships."
The inclusion of the mirror ships in the gambleboxes was not intended as a way for everyone to get everyone else's toys. They were put there because Cryptic wanted to add value to the lockboxes in hopes of getting more people interested in opening them. These ships are exactly the same skins as their prime universe faction counterparts, so no, having them opened for everyone is a bad idea.
I feel your pain, I really do, the Ha' variants are amongst the most silly looking overgrown monstrocities in STO in my opinion too. But your or mine disliking of what's offered doesn't justify TRIBBLE the entire game.
Let me put it this way - the KDF has had only 1 T5 science ship for the past 3 years. And I don't particualry like the Varanus, but you don't see me comming to the forum demading to be able to use the mirror DSSV and Recon nor my Vesta pack that I paid good money for. Faction specific T5, that's it.
Because if Romulans could use every ship of their alied faction then there would be no need to use any other faction than Romulan.
Interesting. And if this is not what was stated in the original documentation for Romulan play or developer commentaries, then this is just pure speculation. Right?

Honestly, is the Ha'nom that bad? I mean, it's the only sci ship with a battle cloak + cannons. What's so terrible that it ruins that?
It's not terrible, no. It's not that good, either. First, it's a sub-Admiral ship. Which means it compares with a Varanus or Kar'Fi, and both will be more survivable, and you can upgrade the Varanus to a Fleet Varanus (and soon a Fleet Kar'Fi)-- there is no Fleet Ha'nom.
Then you compare it with a Vesta, and there's no comparison (ok, I admit the Vesta is really good). Even comparing it with a D'Kyr (also sub-admiral level, but not available to Romulan) doesn't do the Ha'nom any favors.
The Ha'nom does Science "fairly well", but the points are too scattered between tactical and engineering to make either a useful secondary skill.
Further, since sub-system targeting only works with beams, you wind up choosing between beam or cannon skills. Now, if the subsystem targeting on the Ha'nom worked with cannons? That would make it a much, much better ship.
As it stands, though, the ship can't focus on doing anything well enough to make it enjoyable to play.
D'oh! Ok, I admit, I missed it. Thought I'd looked before, and wasn't able to find it. Not sure why all the Ha' ships require T5 shipyards, but it is there.
Still not a fan of the bridge officer layout, but I will admit, the 1.43 shield modifier is nice.
Any witty remarks regarding the rest of my comments about the Ha'nom?
I can think of one tier 5 Fed ship that the Romulans ought to have access to.
The D'Kyr.
Stictly speaking it's not a star fleet vessel, its a Vulcan one.
Given the ties between the two races and the fact that D'Tan was part of the reunification movement it seems odd that romulans don't have access to it. might also help plug the gap in the romulan science ship lineup.
However, I see no good reason whatsoever why any other KDF or Starfleet ship should be available to Romulans at tier 5.
As a JR Romulan commander of a ship I was able to fly a Federation ship...perhaps it is a bug I dunno. But because I was able to I deduced I was able to fly any faction ship I joined.....I was in for a rude surprise.....
I did not make sense though as my BO kept saying cloak the ship , for a mission, and I was in A Fed ship......
Today we fight the GAULS......monstrous and HAIRY beyond reason.
-Give Romulans an ugliest ship they have in any tier
-Deny access to KDF/Starfleet vessels of tier 5
Add dozens of stuff what you can have if you have money which also have unique stuff and powers like Advanced Scimitar dreadnought set.
While there seems to be new zen stuff coming out regularly it would do well to keep anything in game equal to ZEN stuff, only difference being cosmetic but till have enough cosmetic option for free as well.
Or at least more free options for those of us who still pay sib and believe in traditional monhtly sub superiority over free to play.

It's also pretty darn obvious.

Try again.

Just to get a bit more crit?
Not really. But comparing it to the Vesta is a bit eh. That's like comparing the Vesta to the DSSV.
