Just curious what most players' characters are. Do we stick with Humans and canon species like Vulcans, Klingons and Andorians, or do people typically make their own alien race?
My Fed characters are Vulcan and Trill, my KDF character is Klingon and my Romulan character is, well, Romulan.
I stick with Humans with the cruisers due to the Leadership skill. Or a Joined Trill since they get great boosts. Tellarites just because Engineering seems to match their role as Space Gimli.
Escorts I use more combat oriented species like Klingons or Andorians. Bajorans and Betazoids as well.
Science is where I get random. Aliens sometimes. These days, Rommies.
Primarily custom aliens since they get the most customization options. I like changing up their entire appearance sometimes.
For KDF side though I play a Gorn because running around as a 9 foot tall lizard man with a minigun that can bite your face off is just too cool to pass up.
I imagine the most popular are Humans, Aliens, Romulans, Klingons, and Liberated Borg. In that order, with the caveat that LibBorgs are only last because they are available to a smaller group of players.
I play whatever I feel like when I start the character...
At the moment, Fed Human, Fed Andorian, Fed-Rom Romulan, KDF Alien (Supposed to be a Zaldan, but we don't have a 'webbed hands' option in the Alien Character Creator), KDF Klingon, KDF Gorn, KDF-Rom Reman.
I have plans, in the future, to make a KDF Orion, a KDF-Rom Alien (Klingon-Romulan half-breed, like the Carrayans in TNG "Birthright"), and possibly a Fed Alien (Cardassian) some time after Season Eight comes out (probably sometime next year).
"If you can't take a little bloody nose, maybe you ought to go back home and crawl under your bed. It's not safe out here. It's wondrous, with treasures to satiate desires both subtle and gross; but it's not for the timid." -- Q, TNG: "Q-Who?"
^Words that every player should keep in mind, especially whenever there's a problem with the game...

* A Klingon-Aligned Romulan Engineer (eng/sci focus)
Last week I did have a Saurian and Ferasan Tactical, but they've since been retired. Cruisers better fit my play style and so I've decided to stick with Engineers. My plan (granted premature) is to also roll a Cardassian Engineer aligned to the Federation if/when a Cardassian faction is released.
I have 7 humans (6 in Starfleet and 1 with the Romulans (via alien generator) 1 Vulcan and 1 Klingon
my list
VADM Robert E. Lee, UFP Human Tactical Officer, USS Galaxia
LTGEN Anbaak, KDF Klingon Tactical Officer, IKS Truthonga
VADM Makoto Kino, UFP Human Engineering Officer, USS Ginzuishou
VADM Suvak, UFP Vulcan Science Officer, USS Caspian
VADM Roberto G. Jetter, UFP Human Tactical Officer, USS Armstrong
VADM Esmeralda L. Laraia, UFP Human Tactical Officer, USS Casey Ryback
VADM William D. Carter, UFP Human Tactical Officer, USS Locksley
VADM Lorina D. Lee, RRF Human Engineer, RRW Trocus
CDR Beryl Regina, UFP Human Tactical Officer, USS Keiko
I've tried making Cardassians but they don't feel right outside of the black armor. Y'know? Also, the wide necks are hard to pull off.
Cardies come out ok, Yeah the necks aren't quite right but it is a pretty passable look.
Founders on the other hand, Can't find a way to make a decent founder yet, most attempts I try just come out ugly as anything. Jemmies are pretty weird looking too.
Still I have a dream that one day all my aliens will one day have a true playable species, and I can enjoy the full glory that is Star Trek and all its wonderful aliens.

the issue with Jem'Hadar is that the alien creator doesn't have their pieces in it and you have to use other things that look kinda similar.
Vulcan Female - My original STO toon which I still have.
KDF - Klingon Male - My first and still existing KDF toon
KDF - Joined Trill Female - If Dax can do it, why not?
KDF - Orion Female - When Orion became a playable race for the KDF early in STO, you simply had to make one.
Aliens (Fed & KDF) - To take advantage of the freedom in the trait and appearance systems.
Gorn - Yes! As big as one can be!
Romulan Male & Female - Characters for one of the original major races of Star Trek. My regret is rolling a Liberated Borg ENG. Should have just been a Romulan or Reman ENG.
Reman Male - To have a Reman and have a naturally longer decloak damage bonus timer. Hooray for Infiltrator trait!
I would have all custom Aliens, if I had known in the beginning that it can produce all the other races combined and more...alas I did make a Human and a Klingon before learning about that.
