Scientists from Harvard and MIT have managed to create an environment in which photons will bond to form molecules.
I'm subtracting 500 nerd points from every scientist involved for comparing this to lightsabers, while what they've not only reproduced the technobabble nonsense of how Star Trek holograms work but even duplicated the technobabble nonsense word and called it photonic matter.
Bad news for anyone waiting for a holodeck: The environment required to achieve the effect is very close to absolute zero and filled with a dense cloud of radium. Pretty much nothing about it is someplace you want to shoot Borg in. The process may have applications in advanced quantum computing, however.

My first choice of programs would be scantily clad alien girls.
How predictable. Honest. But predictable.
Back on topic: Coooooooooooooooooool. Also the comparison to Lightsabers isn't as cool.
