Really, the A-10 was the cold war version of the classic Russian IL2 Sturmavik, the ww2 ground attack aircraft which was the world's first flying tank.
For a wartarg, how about a heavy bird of prey with the autocannon installed, all you have to do is buff up the heavy bop's hull and you've got a winner.
"The meaning of victory is not to merely defeat your enemy but to destroy him, to completely eradicate him from living memory, to leave no remnant of his endeavours, to crush utterly his achievement and remove from all record his every trace of existence. From that defeat no enemy can ever recover. That is the meaning of victory."
-Lord Commander Solar Macharius
Ah well, good thing they just signed a contract for new wings fleet wide. Guess this contract won't get cancelled, and then the aircraft retired with new wings.
It's same thing over here in Germany. Whenever the top brass decided to renovate some barracks, it is a dead sure sign they will close down in the next round of cuts. ;-p
It is about money for defense contractors. They earn **** load of money when they successfully develop something nice, and then TRIBBLE load of money to maintain it. Just see the maintenance cost of F-22 and B-2. Then of course, the more expensive plane, the more care it needs like some busty swimsuit model.
A-10 doesn't cost much, and it is a rugged plane. Well, of course, it will cry mommy like any other CAS aircraft if deployed in heavy SAM environment (though it didn't see much SAM action like Su-25 has seen)
Grinding for MkIV epic gear?
Ain't Nobody Got Time for That

Base line sure. As you said every aircraft but the SR-71 has had issues with SAMs. The A-10 however also has a dedicated Wild Weasel variant, and last I heard. (alright fine twenty years ago) it was SOP for them to fly one with every attack flight.

At long range 10 miles away it was difficult, once the fighters got within 5 miles of the F-22 pilots they were done. In close air to air engagements, the F-22 pilots "died" in all 9 War Games with 0 enemy fighters shot down.
When you can't produce a technologically superior aircraft to take down technologically inferior ones, you're literally wasting money. The F-22 turns in roughly the same manner the F-4 Phantom did.
Only time the F-22s did shoot down an enemy aircraft during a war game, was via pre established missile lock via PATRIOT Radar System 8 miles out. Out of 3 missiles fired, 2 ran out of fuel before they made it to the MiG 29. shortly after, the MiG 29s wing mates now knowing where the F-22 had fired a missile from (the fighter is stealthy, the weapons fired, are not) they closed in, and dog fighted in close range.
F-22 lost.
Now Iran, India, China, and Russia have produced, and/or are in production of their own Stealth Fighters which are superior in handling, and combat capability.
F-35 will be as much of a waste as the F-22. Both aircraft cause wear and tear on the pilots, not because of speed, but because of oxygenation in the cabins. F-35 has a major issue still being worked out for a proper seal on the canopy. Causing air to jet into the cabin.
The F-22s issues is fumes from the engines leaking into the cabin.
We've spent so much money for aircraft that can't even perform to par with any F-15, F-16, or F-18 strike fighter.
We can't even keep up with MiG 29s anymore.
In war games against Algeria, of 20 vs 20, the Algerians came out on top with 9 - 0. Out of 20 F-22s that engaged 20 Algerian MiG-29s, only 11 Mig 29s were "destroyed" with all 20 F-22s wiped out. This was back in July during the war games with Algeria.
You wouldn't happen to have any idea of how some of the other "Western" fighters do, do you?
Stuff like the Mirage/Rafale, Eurofighter and Saab Gripen?
I mean, I'm a big fan of the MiG series, from what I know, but that one's not gonna be a very popular suggestion in discussions about replacing our current F16's I like those discussions, but I really don't have the kind of comparisons like you just posted at the ready. Assuming this article overview is something we can believe, the Eurofighter can take on the F-22 in close combat and take down a SU-30 without too many problems.
Oh my, this just begs for a new 'War Targ' class of BoPs that will mount a huge gun similar to the autocannon of the Bortasqu'.
I'm really starting to hope that the so called 'faction reputation' that mr.Stahl talked about will be implemented cause it seems it would be the best way to get some things like this for the KDF on which the majority of the red side players agree.

Just imagine a Raptor with War Targ inspired nose art, tusks and teeth and stuff, and a big twin-mission pod mounted towards the rear setup, kind of evoking the A-10's twin engine nacelle layout.
5 forward weapons, at least one variant with 5 tac slots. A high hull modifier or a damage immunity for a few seconds set bonus, low speed to emulate the A-10's purposely designed high loiter time.
The special weapon should be like the omega plasma torpedo, but a cannon.
Think like the plasma repeater weapons and their ammo mechanic. It's a big cannon with a 45 degree arc that fires at the speed of say CRF3 or a point defense cannon and has a massive hull bonus, but doesn't draw on weapons power until it's fired all its allotted shots, at which point it enters, say, a minute or two cooldown+massive weapon power drain to reload. It can be exclusive to the war targ like the kumari's wing cannons, and only available in disruptor flavor of course.
The MaHa also comes equipped with a Heavy Disruptor Nose Cannon universal console. This console can unleash a sustained barrage of disruptor fire to any starship that enters its range of fire. Enemy ships hit by this weapon will have their engines knocked offline for a short time.

Booooooooo. Its a single-mission aircraft in a world where that single mission is probably the most important one on modern battlefields (close support), and costs a fraction of its underperforming replacement.
Heck, the KDF would probably use the original if they could. "Wait, so the humans built an aircraft that was just a giant gun, engines, and armor? Where the fanciest electronics on board were a pair of night-vision binoculars, and the pilot navigated with a map in his lap and a compass on the dash? And they retired it? What the hell is WRONG with them?"
Well, this is terrible! I love the Warthog, it is a devastating war machine and helps keep soldiers alive so they can return to their families. I once met a vet who would have died if a Warthog strike hadn't saved her squads life. She has a husband and two children who are all rather pleasant.
I will be naming my first KDF T6 vessel in honor of this timeless design. Rest sweet machine, rest and we will remember you.
Again, you really don't know what you're talking about. Well over 100 have been built. AF-2, the second frame from aroudn 2009 or so, has well over 1000 grueling hours of stress flights on it. Just for comparison, Most of the aging F-16 fleet had 2400 hours acrued by 2011, and at that time over 60% of the entire F-16 fleet was showing massive signs of cracks in the bulkheads. But that's just one example.
The F-35 has been in operational training with several squadrons for a while now. The Air Force started training pilots on it in 2012. The Marines have been flying even longer, I believe. You have to understand that its current USE does not denote its current STATUS. It takes time to train up an entire infrastructure on a radically new airframe. This has always been the case. In Russia during WW2, a fresh squadron could take over a year to train up on how to properly service, maintain, fly, and perform combat, in their already-well-established planes. It's not just pilots jumping into a plane. It revolves around every aspect including supply chains, stockpiles of parts (wheels, helmets, the special tools needed, etc).
In point of fact, the F-35 is in its 7th production run to date. It's in LRIP7 right now and LRIP8 is projected to begin in 2014 sometime. Total numbers through LRIP7 are 164 airframes delivered. That's full-time production. That's not prototypes or test frames. These are full airframes. Testing and training CONTINUES, there is no doubt. However, that doesn't mean this aircraft is NOT in production.
Almost ALL of the comments like yours, the doom-and-gloom, are parroting il-informed and political commentary from the folks trying to tear down their opposing political party, or by folks trying to denounce it for personal reasons (not grounded in logic, or reality). And that's why I said what I said.
