Gold Sellers are a common problem in MMOs. Even WoW has 'em. Only thing that can be done is report spam unfortunately. Or if they actually PM you... put them on the ignore list.
I can't take it anymore! Could everyone just chill out for two seconds before something CRAZY happens again?!

Welcome to MMO's and the one you are getting spam from is in EVERY MMO! Friend of eg likes spam but not in a can and there are idiots that buy from them.
Just report and then ignore is all you can do. Just be glad its not done in zone chat every 10 seconds all day everyday, that is 100 times more annoying than reporting an email or 10.
Join Date: Nobody cares.
"I'm drunk, whats your excuse for being an idiot?" - Unknown drunk man.
its the problem with the f2p model.
when they get banned, they make new accounts.

Dammit, couldn't you have kept that a secret? I stopped reporting it as spam since they started to autoban people, for typing the company's name, without warning. Cryptic will just waste time and resources on some crappy solution that hits the wrong people instead of fixing actual bugs. The fact that my crew doesn't turn up in my ship interior and that my department heads switch constantly is far more annoying than a bit of spam every few days.

You mean Cryptic's overzealous auto-ban-everyone-that-says-anything-we-don't-like-on-our-secret-list-of-words method hasn't stopped the spammers? One moment while I put on my shocked face.

No they haven't stopped them. In fact they are worse now.
They are even worse in NW if you can believe that.
Can't PWE just sue these people???

Actually, what I've found, is if you report them as spamming, it'll auto-place them on your ignore list. Sadly, however, they likely create 10 new accts for every 1 that is shut down.
But the problem ebbs & surges, I went months, w/o seeing any of their messages or mail, then all of a sudden, got like 3 in 2 days, then nothing again for a few months.

STO is not bad in comparsion to say Neverwinter and WOW. Yet, WOW actually goes after them, there was a report on Gamebreaker about some gold farmers/account thieves getting jail time in China.

Keep reporting, use the ignore list liberally, and move along.
there isn't a whole lot of penetration into STO by gold spammers/real Money Traders (RMT's).
They way Cryptic has its revenue model set up makes it rather difficult to do... and it's nearly impossible to set up a bot to run a character in STO, so the gold farmers have to actually play the game. Most RMT's adverts aren't gold spammers at all.. they're filchers and con artists in this game, and there is a very very good chance that if you do biz with them that they're really just scammers looking to get CC info from you to rob your bank account blind! Because in game missions are instanced it's just more bother then its worth to the RMT's and their agents. STO for all that it has some pretty spectacular non trek flaws, is a very difficult MMO for the RMT's to operate in.
((and yes, something can be set up with the foundry, but that is something specificly looked for by the dev team these days.. Players looking to exploit the foundry and foundry missions HAVE been banned and had thier accounts closed.))
And it being the holidays with most of the cryptic/PWI staffers off on holiday they're jumping in game to try their luck at separating you from your money (as the "Cops" are taking some time off)
Every once in a while someone makes a big thing about spammer/RMT activity. Just report it, put them on your ignore list, and move on.
If you have made use of RMT services before then they have your in game addy and will solicit you for more business. If you acquired the account from some one else, but you yourself have never bought EC, then rest assured that the person you got the account from DID. Those RMT adverts are part of the price your paying for the short cut you have taken.
Sorry if this may seem unsympathetic, but if the above is the case, then its your own fault.
Other more conventionally structured MMO's wage a constant ongoing battle against RMT activity.. and in some cased have so adversely effected the game as to drive off legitimate customers (( A certain NCSoft title comes to mind))
STO does not have this problem. So if your getting constant RMT activity directed at you, then for what ever reason your account has attracted their attention and if they are nothing else they are persistent SOB's. The only way to stop the activity directed at you is to ask for GM assistance to change your in game @handle. It can be done, but you might have to "Come Clean" if you've violated the TOS.
Forgiveness can happen, but your going to have to jump through some hoops to do it.
just report them that they are trying to sell zen/dil to get cash, and then will use that cash to buy fertilizer/weapons for an imminent attack on school/kindergarten/college/university/hospital/elderly home/city hall/White House...
..and hopefully they will be banned for life

There do seem to have been a lot of these guys around, lately, hawking their "wares" in zone chat... not just the ever-depressing friends of ova, but some other bunch as well, I forget the name.
No doubt it's for the reason mentioned above, they're hoping staff coverage is limited due to the holidays.
They're a nuisance... personally, I report them when I see them, and I'd encourage others to do the same. Does anyone actually need the "advantages" they provide, anyway? Paying real money to shady characters on the Internet just to get some in-game shinies... strikes me as, at best, showing a disordered sense of priorities.
True, they are all over in the past few weeks. ESD is getting one Goldspammer company and SFA another. Heck, even Qo'nos is getting spammed now.
I had to laugh at one, which was leveled up to level 45. All that work he/she put into it, is now going down the toilet.
I honestly think that Cryptic would eliminate a majority of the goldspammers with these free accounts if they locked zone chat until they at least complete the Tier 1 or Tier 2 storylines. That way they would be less enthusiastic to spam since they have to spend hours leveling new characters just to spam again.
They could even make chance a profit off them if they happen to offer Chat unlock services, so if they paid to unlock it as soon as they finished the Tutorial, then get banned for spamming, hey PWI comes out in the green.
But I'm sure someone would say locking chat would discourage new players, and I can understand that. And in response, may I suggest new players could get directed to a helper channel that's moderated by PWI staff or players (volunteers) and if a gold spammer decides to advertise, instant ban.
If those spammers are based in US then their data can be given to IRS for tax evasion. IRS seems to quite serious about business. They have even passed FBAR and FATCA.

Just as an fyi - PWE they won't just change your handle for getting spam mail as your handle isn't private. They will only allow 1 (or 2 if an extreme situation happens) if your account login was the same as your in game handle as back in the day they were the same (however since we all had to make pwe accounts i don't think this is an issue anymore).
And PWE is not in china it's a US based company.

It is Chinese, mate. They have US offices, but the entire operation is run out of Beijing.
Ergo, Brandon and Stahl might be Americans working in an American office on American soil... but their boss is a Chinese man in a business suit probably teleconferencing between US visits.

If it's the story I think you're referring to, it wasn't Gold Spammers, it was in fact hackers who'd compromised and then sold the accounts/items. One interesting thing to note is that Chinese prisions make their prisoners play WoW and farm/sell gold in that game:
