Lol...really?

I'm sure I'm not the first one to come across this.

I put some words into an interact with object task. A little yellow triangle pops up informing me that there are profane words in my text.

Huh?

I re-read it. Then read it again. I don't see any bad swears...what's going on?

Then it hits me.

"Erect a level 10 force field"

Erect

Thanks for the laugh, Cryptic. I hadn't even thought of it in that way until you pointed it out. :P

I guess "Raise a level 10 force field" will have to do...lol.

Not as funny as "134" getting flagged. :D

"Critics who say that the optimistic utopia Star Trek depicted is now outmoded forget the cultural context that gave birth to it: Star Trek was not a manifestation of optimism when optimism was easy. Star Trek declared a hope for a future that nobody stuck in the present could believe in. For all our struggles today, we haven’t outgrown the need for stories like Star Trek. We need tales of optimism, of heroes, of courage and goodness now as much as we’ve ever needed them."

Oh, you bad-boy with your naughty language!

In the spirit of things I've come up with a list of other words that should be censored...ya know, just in case people decide to use them indecently:

    rub
    spank
    eat
    hard
    jerk
    pump
    lick

I've dubbed these the "7 not-so-dirty words".

Yeah, the profanity filter in this game is monumental overkill. It's not the worst I've ever seen though.

The worst is in Dragon Quest Monsters: Joker. the profanity filter there actually blocks the names of some of the creatures. It doesn't x them out when you encounter them in the game, but if you acquire one you CAN'T name it with it's species name.

It could be worse. I'm French, and I make my mission in french, for the french language category (not like I'm doing something new, shameful, or unknown to Cryptic, they made this category).
Unfortunately, some English bad words have a different meaning in French, and I had several words flagged. For example, the word shower is "douche", and flagged. Also, the word late is "******", and is also flagged. However, I can curse all the way I want in French, and add any mean words, and I won't be flagged for it. For the french foundry, it's fine to say the equivalent of FU, but it's not to say you will be late :D

I think it was GW1 (or another game can't be sure) where they censored the creature names/saying because they contained flagged word. Like "***ed zombie" because it was "Damned".

Yeah the profanity filter is utterly useless in any language other than english..
Douche actually has several meanings in english, the oldest of which is similar to the french meaning.

and that was when you were fighting them that it displayed them like "***ed zombie"? Yeesh....

DQM:J at least showed the names normally except when you were typing. If you encounterd the "Ghost" monster in battle the name would be displayed correctly. The only issue was that, if you acquired one of these monsters, the game would not let you name it "Ghost". Which is totally absurd.

As for why they filtered "Ghost", it's an obscure racial slur. VERY obscure.

I really do think that they went overboard out of fear of what the twisted unwashed masses would do. I have never come across a Foundry mission that falls in the category of slash, vulgarity, or erotica.

I've never even seen the push up animation used inappropriately with a character lying on her back.

Probably the most offensive ones I've played have been the kind that shoot fish in a barrel. Cryptic does little to prevent those, but lots to prevent me from having a character say "that it's.."

Yep, the name of the creature you selected was censored, it took us some time to understand what the name really was. OFC, when the creature was mentioned by the NPC it was censored to, like "Oh no, we are under attack by ***ed Zombies !".

I never played a mission with inapropriate dialogues/situation. Never heard of it. I think the kind of people that want to do that never use the foundry long enough to understand how to do it. Even less to publish the mission. It require some time, patience and will to stay long enough for that.

I doubt Cryptic actually had an employee sit down and come up with all the bad words they could think of. It's most likely the profanity filter list was purchased from a third party, probably for CoH.

And, like most commercial products, they will continue to 'improve' it.

Eventually all words will be listed. **** **.
