What the hell, Cryptic? Why are you putting TRAITS in Lock Boxes? That's... really annoying, and stupid (IMO). Traits should be dependent on Class and Race... not finding a special item that gives you a new trait.
Ugh... just wanted to vent and get people's opinions on it.

Evasive Maneuvers cooldown reduced by 10sec

Extra Damage Bonus when using Power Cells.

Traits being in a lockbox makes me uneasy. Probably the first time a lockbox has left me concerned since the old Christmas box they started with containing the infamous and truly truly truly outrageous Jem Bug.
This was always on the table since the revamp, they specifically stated in the dev blogs about it one of the reasons to do it was so that traits could become rewards. It never ceases to amaze me how people feel blindsided by changes that were announced weeks in advance with a parade and neon signs.
Let's see how rare/expensive these are. If they'll settle in the <1M EC range like cross faction consoles or mirror ships they'll be easily accessible to anyone. And that they come bundled with a free trait respec is pretty huge IMO. Imagine if you could buy skill respecs with EC, I'd be all over that.
With the slight exception of Helmsman, not a single one of those would contribute much to a "win".
You can only really "pay 2 win" when the game is PvP-centric or just straight PvP. In STO, PvP is an ancillary distraction at best, and entirely dismissible as a worthless waste of code and time otherwise.
Oh, and lets not forget that they'll end up like the console packs; Easily obtainable on the exchange for trivial amounts of EC for anyone with even an ounce of spare time.
So, I think I see it. This is 'tinfoil hat' theory here, but I think I understand. Sure these traits aren't really P2W or anything at all, but I see the cleverness of it. By tossing in trait respecs, that will get people to buy them, which in turn will mean they could possibly justify further traits and such in the future.
But if they can do that, then why won't they at least put in skill respec tokens then into a box? Seriously, I'd honestly open boxes/buy them off the exchange if they did. En masse even.
I remain empathetic to the concerns of my community, but do me a favor and lay off the god damn name calling and petty remarks. It will get you nowhere.
I must admit, respect points to Trendy for laying down the law like that.
I dont see the problem. they are extra traits you can buy with money or in game currency. you dont get an extra trait. you have to swap out one of your old ones.
how is that any different from being able to buy a DOFF, or a bridge officer, or a ship or a console? everything in the game pretty much gives you a unique power or boost or makes your character better or at the least give them more options to choose from. why is this really any different?
The problem is the whole picture.
First they make D'd Startrek icon turn like a whale.
Then they give cash shop consoles with turn rate.
Introduce set bonus with turn rate.
Now a lockbox trait with turn rate.

I didn't see any traits...
4 traits....
Don't want to spend money? Then just grind the EC for it.
At least they package a respec with it.

I see what you did there :P
His answer is a FAAAKE. There are 5 traits.
Of the four, Helmsman excites me most although none of these seem OP.
I would like an alternate way to earn/buy them (even without a trait respec) just to make sure they remain steadily available.
The Helmsman one isn't bad, especially for people desperate for any extra turn rate. Plus, the EM cooldown reduction can be pretty handy.

It is a peculiar phenomenon that we can imagine events that defy the laws of the universe.

So, yeah, I'm not seeing any "pay 2 win".
