There should be a way to block people on forums and remove their post from a thread you started/own.

That's NEVER going to happen. Unless a person breaches the forum's rules your idea equates to censorship. Not really the best way to operate a forum.

I was hoping this was a request to add a delete-your-own-post feature

I make some posts in error, a delete button would save me some embarrassment (rather than just editing)

changing a thread title would be good too

but I agree with the above poster.

the forum is a communication tool, no way any post should be selectively deleted at a random person's whim

I suggested this exact thing more than 2,5 years ago...

People seem to have become nicer since then... If the Community guy hadn shut down the thread back then... Bans would have followed.

Could have been nice of cause if I had just been able to close/delete it myself, but...

It is STILL a good idea.
Don't look silly... Don't call it the "Z-Store/Zen Store"...
Let me put the rumors to rest: it's definitely still the C-Store (Cryptic Store) It just takes ZEN.

I can understand and even upport an ignore feature on the forum, it is somehting that is on other forums I have used, this is personal so only you don't see the post. Saying that given how the ignore works in the game I wouldn't trust Cryptic to bring it to the forums.

On removing posts from threads you started, you don't own them, no way should that be allowed.

The funny thing is that vBulletin (which is the software used for this forum) already has all the features you ask for and more. A fresh installation comes with several of these features enabled by default so someone has intentionally decided to turn them off. I won't speculate of the reasons behind this but turning them off is a pity since this is one of the most user friendly and feature packed forum softwares out there. I licensed a copy several years ago for a private forum I run.

This forum has moderators to do the moderating. You don't "own" a thread just because you were the first to post in it.

As a moderator, I admit that part of my role is that of censor.

However, that function is also defined by the forum rules. I am not supposed to edit posts just because I feel like it, and when I do edit posts I am supposed to create a record of why I did it.

My role is NOT to decide who can post and who can not, and if I were in the habit of censoring people who disagree with me you can bet that I would not remain a Moderator very long. On the contrary, it is necessary for me to be extremely tolerant of how other posters react to me.

I don't think that it would be good for the forums if anyone who started a new thread had the ability to effectively exclude anyone with a dissenting opinion. It also wouldn't be good for the game, as it would be more difficult to get balanced feedback or to reach a consensus.

So yeah, not likely to happen. It would be abused, without a doubt. In case you haven't noticed there are a lot of differing opinions around here! :D

If you encounter a post from someone that seems to be violating the forum rules, you should report it and let the Moderators and the PWE staff deal with it. Many eyes make it more likely that problems will be found and corrected.

Speaking for myself, I am very familiar with the rules and I try to take my cues from BranFlakes about interpreting anything that isn't clear. That is how we try to limit abuse on the forums.

Contrasting opinions should be welcome and tolerated, however trollers and personally derogatory comments should not, like some of what's been happening in my last thread Fleet Code of Conduct.

Regardless, one needs to develop a thick skin and fast on any forum. I understand why many who tend to have temperate natures and don't appreciate that attitude stay away, which is not necessarily a good thing.

I agree with what you are saying! However there is a difference between avoiding being over sensitive and having to be berated by some of the rudest most obnoxious people simply because they can hide behind their computer screen.

Many local business and institutions (i.e. health clinics, restaurants, etc...) have signs that warn customers/patients that verbal and or physical violence (including bullying) will not be tolerated and that said individuals will be banned from said establishment and that the police will be called and charges pressed. A variation of this (at the very least banning) would work well to keep people's behaviour in check here in STO on the forums.

After all, politeness cost nothing!

Except their pride and self esteem. And the sick fun they get when seeing others in trouble/worse off than they are, or so they think. Heavens forbid trolls like some in the above thread I mentioned, look themselves in the mirror of truth. There are rules about personal rude comments, but at their stage of understanding, they don't see rules no more than they see the things they call others in their own posts. Still, no matter what form of punishment system in mind, there would need to be a higher oversight, for as bluegeek points out, they would be the first to abuse such system by forum griefing; like they try to do to players in game.

EDIT: I haven't reported any of those on my thread yet, fact is I haven't bothered to report anyone ever on any forum, being as I'm used to that behavior. Maybe I should, what do you think? Blue, how does one report in the first place, if they need to?

xtern1ty, I read the posts you are referring to before.

To say the least, they had issues in multiple areas and the reaction was not surprising given your presentation.

yea when i saw the title i figured it was some kind of forum ignore being wanted... that is one thing
but wanting people to be able to arbitrarily edit or removed any posts in a thread they start is a very bad idea
it would be abused all the time to silence opposing view points

yes there are some people that are just plain jerks when they reply, but some thread authors are just as bad or worse.
remember any person that starts a thread at some point will be replying to a thread too

there are forum rules for a reason, and a moderation staff to enforce them
the moderators have to walk the line between freedom to post and the rules, and being part of the forum staff they are accountable when a decision is made, random thread authors would have no such accountability.

remember this is a private public forum for the game
it is public in the fact that anyone can register and post their opinions whatever they are as long as they dont break the rules, however the forum is owned and operated by the company, so its their rules and their job to police it.

now that said, there needs to be an easier way to report a post or thread for violating the rules. i have seen in other forums where each post has a button to report it that u can click and write a short note on the reason for the report. something like that would be useful here

TL;DR: Disagreeing with xtern1ty is trolling and must be deleted immediately.

For the time being, the only officially-sanctioned way you have to report an abusive post is to file a ticket. If you want to file an official complaint that's tracked in their system, that's the way. You can file tickets via email as well.

The unofficial way is to PM a Mod. We will not discuss any specifics with you, we are not obligated to follow up on it, and we will never tell you what we did (if anything). If you do make a report this way, you need to provide a link to the offending post. If I can, I try to investigate. If I feel the post requires moderation, I will take action.

NOTE: I have been known to follow the breadcrumbs backward through a thread... if a person making a report actually started something that resulted in the offense, they might find themselves being moderated and getting a warning, too...

That button is coming, but I don't have an official ETA. We'll get it when we get it. Watch for some kind of announcement from BranFlakes when PWE's ready to roll out a forum software upgrade.

Alright, thanks. The email feature is nifty as well since it allows a player to contact even if the servers or forum is down.

And thanks for letting us know about the upcoming addition! Will look forward to see it when it's out, though I don't intend to use it much if at all. I've developed a pretty heavily armored skin along with a tempered, responsible nature from practicing intelligently through the years. Skills I intend to use wisely in accordance to the rules, for the game's longterm benefit; to the dismay of any hater, troll or flamer who wants to label me in their own terms. ;)
