Personally, I like the idea of Having the Romulan Republic. Firstly, it opens up more playable races then just Romulans. And While I personally do not like the Remans as far as looks (come on they are space orcs.) it does mean that we won't just have one species. It's the same reason that they rolled the Orion, Nausican and Gorn into the KDF, for species diversity. And I wouldn't mind seeing Hirogen added as a playable species, especially with their connection with Empress Sela.
The reason I see The republic as a good idea if the PvP and STFs. Like it or not, we have a two team combat system in place, and adding in a third element would either require a complete redesign of all PvP content, which already took a long time to get the ones we do have, but would also lead to situations where you will still be facing either longer waiting times to have a third team fill, or only having two out of the three facing each other. I wish that romulans could join a romulan only faction and not have their choice of ally be an issue, but I can't see the tech being easily modified to allow this, and It does bring in the potential to bolster fleets on both sides, giving them much more diversity.
I can see the complaint the the current itteration of the Romulans are not like they were in the show, stealthy and secretive, but from a game play stand point, that wouldn't be nearly as fun, and from what I've seen they still retain much of what makes us like them as romulans. This also can be said about the Federation. We lack a sophisticated enough exploration content to really live up to what the federation is, so we now run around like a military with some non combat thrown in. Game play wise, this is more enjoyable, but it does detract from the actual idea of being the Federation.
I do not see them letting the Romulans split up even more then they already have, and if they do add in a true third side, I can imagine it more like a coalition of enemy species, the true way, Hirogen, the Tal shiar and or such factions coming together to form a true third team. But that is not likely for quite a while. And I'm actually satisfied that the Romaluns get their own story, but can then delve into their allies content, so that they have a good amount of content that they can play.

I wouldn't mind seeing Hirogen added as a playable species, especially with their connection with Empress Sela.
But remember that Sela is part of the Romulan Star Empire, the Hirogen are the enemies (allies of the oppressors) of the Romulan Republic. So I highly doubt that would come about.
And I'm actually satisfied that the Romaluns get their own story, but can then delve into their allies content, so that they have a good amount of content that they can play.
