I was looking for a fleet ship today for my tactical Captain and I started browsing the Options.
As far as I can tell the Fleet Aquarius is inferior to the Tactical Escort, am I reading it wrong? Personally I'm not a fan of cloaking (yes I know it can be useful, its just not something I do). I was just drawn to the Aquarius because it looks great, and you don't see many about. But honestly it just seems inferior.
It's not supposed to be superior to anything. It's simply a ship style some people might like to fly. Since not everyone does PvP or grinds STFS - and thus has no real need to have the very best at something - it's just a fun ship to fly.
STO is about my Liberated Borg Federation Captain with his Breen 1st Officer, Jem'Hadar Tactical Officer, Liberated Borg Engineering Officer, Android Ops Officer, Photonic Science Officer, Gorn Science Officer, and Reman Medical Officer jumping into their Jem'Hadar Carrier and flying off to do missions for the new Romulan Empire. But for some players allowing a T5 Connie to be used breaks the canon in the game.
The Aquarius suffers from missing an aft weapon...but I still enjoy flying mine. It's awesome when you're teamed with an Oddy and he launches his pet, because you're the same size as his pet.
It's basically a Bird of Prey without a cloak. Doesn't mean it can't be fun, just that's what you're getting.
Also, no ship is really "inferior" to another. I've seen Atroxs built to be the meanest things on the battlefield, BoPs that tank better than cruisers, science ships that deal out more DPS than any escort. It's all about build, skill planning and player ability.
Once I get the oppertunity, I fully intend to get an Aquarius for my sci, and I'll make it to the best of my ability.
I know there is a method but all I see is madness.
I own an Aquarius too, though I too am not presently driving it around.
The Aquarius' big boon are actually its universal slots. They count for something - you can build in the same sort of survavibility as the Andorian Khyzon can pack.
It's also fragile, with its low hull. Though, it tends to be more durable/have more staying power than my Vesta. >_>
The firepower loss is actually not that significant. The power loss you 'save' compensates enough for it to not actually be all that subpar.
One problem I've had with my Fleet Aquarius lies on its size... when a lot is going on, it's actually harder to figure out just where the ship is facing. Often enough, my fore cannons were not on target despite my excellent turnrate.
Overall, I'm pretty pleased with my purchase for the time I used it... but I'm not sure I'll come back to it. The point? It's a fun little ship that you can make work and pull its weight in a team - to the surprise of some and despite the scorn aired about it. But other ships certainly compete better (i.e.: the Andorian Khyzon seems to do anything I wanted out of my Aquarius better).
That brings up an interesting idea... why not allow those players who have purchased the defiant retrofit, with it's cloaking device console, to put that console on the aquarius?

Because that would make too many people happy...

It's been a long road, getting from there to here~
Maybe I should expand a bit on the why's and like.
My Main tactical has pretty much everything he could need, I occasionally get bored and cycle him to a new ship. The last change was the Chimera, which he started flying when it came out.
For a time he did drive Cruisers, including the Galaxy-X, however the Damage output was lacking, and I missed the ability to get out of my own way.
So I went back to Escorts.
As far as effect, I mostly do PVE, and I consider the Advanced escort one of the best (Its the ability to chuck out a gravity well and DHC's...).
I've got an Advanced, though. So was looking for something different to fly, something with a bit more BANG. I was thinking about making it a Crit monster. I already have a ~60% Crit severity bonus from innate abilities, so some anti-proton's with CritH should make things fall over with amusing speed. An Aquarius is a contender for this ship. So any thoughts in this direction?
Note: I have an Escort carrier already. Just didn't seem to get on with it, might be the lack of Dil/EC I was willing to throw at it that caused the issue.
The Aquarius turns slightly faster than all other fleet ships (80 inertia at 17 degrees), has a 4 device slots and 2 uni boff slots. With the device slots, the Hardpoints gets your more HP than any other escort, plus a Deuterium Surplus for extra speed, a shield battery for short-term tanking while under fire, and a Subspace Mod for more tanking.
Plus it has a very large RP value to Odyssey captains.
It gives up 1 aft weapon slot, HP, and shield for that purpose.
I see the Aquarius let down more by the lack of useful devices than its own stats. Come Nukara Rep, I foresee these guys packing Tetryon device bombs in a slot to complement their CRF alpha strike.
Its a different kind of ship, yes, but definitely not as clearly inferior as before the HP and shield buff.

(Shame one can't get a Fleet Peregrine.)
Thanks.
