Or, just to play devils advocate here, it's an attempt to let the film stand on it's own initially without being forced into (unrealistic) comparisons to WoK and Montalban.
Ok so just looked up weather this is true and it is. . . He is Khan, kirk dies comes back to life and Spock prime is in the film too nice to see the hard writing skills of Hollywood are slowing down and they are reusing anything they can. . .
Just proves to me that this is not trek in any shape of the meaning. . .
Boo - I was hoping he was playing Gary Mitchell. Not too pleased at a white British guy playing a genetically perfected South Asian. (The fact that the role was created by a Mexican actor was less of a problem for me, since it started in the 1960s and RM was at least not another genetic white dude).
Better that than old, fat, and crushed by a bridge?
(I'm just kidding - I actually thought the idea of Old-Timey Kirk dying on some random planet for the sake of an alien civilization who''ll never know he was there was pretty appropriate for a Starfleet officer.)

I new it be a WoK............ think I all ready know what number 3 will be star trek a search for spock :P
I don't need to read anything in the linked article to know the story for this movie will stink. The story in the last one was so horrible, it won't surprise me if this one is even worse.
This is the reason why i don't understand why Abrams even took ST on. Haven't seen one full scene in a theater yet and already it will suck. I love the ship and will be in line on OD, because I am one of those who actually want to see a picture first before blasting it. And I also know this...
This person will be seeing STID the day it comes out, just to blast it when the return to a computer near you.
SPOILER ALERT
If you are actually stupid enough to want to go see the new Abrams Garbage trek movie, you may not want to read this.
If you do not want to know the truth about Star Trek Into Darkness and who Benedict Cumberbatch is really playing, you should not be reading this.
A few hours ago, the movie had its huge world premiere in Sydney. While spoiler free reviews are popping up online, due to Abrams begging the press to not bust his lies wide open, people are leaking out the truth that JJ Abrams has been trying to hide for over a year. And it?s a truth everyone already suspected.
Benedict Cumberbatch is playing Khan in Star Trek Into Darkness. All that bull**** of him not being Khan and really ?John Harrison? was just a cover to hide the truth from moviegoers. Oh, he does go by ?John Harrison? in the movie?but that?s not his real name. He reveals his name to Kirk later in the movie.
Thanks to an IMDB forum poster, this is specifically how Khan fits in to the movie.
?The Klingons are becoming more of a threat to the Federation. Try have already invaded two planets and are threatening more. Admiral Marcus thinks Starfleet is too weak ne focused on exploration and needs more superior weaponry to protect earth.
?Section 31 is involved. They have been scanning the region of space where presumably they tracked the Botany Bay to find the 300 year old augments and use their superior skills and intellect to build up Earth?s defences.
They find and revive Khan and use his crew?s lives against him to force him to do their dirty work?. But we only find this out as the story progresses.?
The Wrath of Khan isn?t just the best Star Trek movie, it?s one of the best science fiction movies ever made. The way Into Darkness plays out is like an alternate universe version of The Wrath of Khan, only without any of the lasting effects or emotional resonance of that movie.
-Pike dies, but this is sort of to be expected.
-Spock Prime shows up in one of the dumbest cameos ever. Basically when Khan is causing all his trouble, Spock calls his older self. Spock Prime basically says ?I promised I wouldn?t reveal details of our lives, but Khan is super bad and we only defeated him with great sacrifice.? GROAN.
-Admiral Marcus is on Khan?s side, duh.
-?Khaaaaaan!? is yelled, but not by Kirk.
The end of the movie is basically the end of Wrath of Khan, only with the Kirk and Spock roles reversed. Kirk goes down into the radiation in the Budweiser plant and the hands on the glass scene is there, only it?s Kirk dying.
Here?s the big stinger, Kirk does die like Spock did at the end of Wrath of Khan. However, it?s established early in the movie that Khan?s blood has magical healing properties. He?s the Holy Grail in a bottle, basically.
McCoy earlier injected some of Khan?s blood into a dead Tribble. After Kirk dies, McCoy sees the Tribble alive and realizes he can save Kirk. So Spock pursues Khan in a big chase scene, he and Uhura knock him out, and they use his blood to save Kirk who wakes up in a hospital bed. He gives a big speech and they begin the five year mission
So instead of doing Star Trek III: The Search for Kirk, they inject some of Khan?s blood into dead Kirk and he comes back to life. Now Kirk has a little bit of Khan in him.
thus reinforcing the fact that Abrams and his team of writers are unoriginal hacks
This is from a review of the film and TBH proves what i been saying from day one! THIS IS NOT TREK!!!! you can NOT!!! remake Wrath of Khan!!!
To the last, I will grapple with thee... from Hell's heart, I stab at thee! For hate's sake, I spit my last breath at thee!

When I watched the 2009 film i started a REALLY heated thread on here called 'ABOMINATION'... as you can imagine, I was not a fan of Abram and I found myself alone in this, being told by most people it was the best thing ever... BUT IT ISN'T TREK! ITS NOT EVEN A REDRESSED STAR WARS!
Im just glad to see that Im not alone in my opinion that they are great films but terrible Trek.
STAR TREK CONTINUES
Episode One - A Single MomentEpisode Two - InfancyEpisode Three - Unto the Breach Episode Four - Head Of A NeedleEpisode Five: The Duality of MenEpisode Six - Redemption Earned Episode Seven - Shattered UniverseEpisode Eight - The Gepetto ConditionEpisode Nine - One Room, Two Officers Episode Ten - Beyond The Farthest StarEpisode Eleven - It's OK, It Won't HurtEpisode Twelve - A Protracted Officer Episode Thirteen - SomewhenEpisode Fourteen - The Boy Who LivedEpisode Fifthteen - Empathy
This "confirmation" of the Khan rumor just proves the new movie is all kinds of dumb. In WoK all true Trekkers knew the backstory and what was motivating Khan's hatred for Kirk. I'm sure the new movie will come up with something red-matter/unobtainium worthy.
As a die-hard Trek fan, and TOS purist, the first "reboot" movie made me cringe so many times it was painful. Bits and pieces were fine, some even good (e.g. McCoy). But as a whole it just wasn't Star Trek. It's just another over-the-top action/effects (with lens flares!) movie with familiar character names slapped on top. But for the most part those characters turned out to be anything but familiar. The "alternate timeline" excuse can only be stretched so far...
Will I see the new movie? Yes, but only because my stepson said he'd pay for it.
Actually I'm surprised. I thought this time JJ would blow up earth with the 22nd century Xindi weapon which somehow fell through a space-time portal and survived the reactor overload. It's not so bad after all.
You know what really makes me sad? The negative reactions to this development
Wrath of Khan was a great movie, there's no argument there. But redoing it in this new universe does NOT tarnish it; it's just a new, separate take on older ideas. And I for one am looking forward to this movie, regardless of if the plot follows this line or not.
I've seen all the movies, and I've seen TOS along with TNG. And am working on fully catching up with DS9, VOY and ENT. I understand JJ's Trek is nothing like the original, and I'm okay with that.
In other words, I'm giving this movie a chance, and not letting bias/preference for the older Trek get in the way. It says a lot when many 'fans' won't do the same imo.
Was named Trek17.
Been playing STO since Open Beta, and have never regarded anything as worse than 'meh', if only due to personal standards.
I am now curious to see how this could possibly be a reworking of TWoK, given that TWoK was itself a sequel to the episode "Space Seed" - an incident that cannot have happened in the new timeline.
However, the over-the-top vitriolic reactions here simply help demonstrate my earlier assessment that some folks just can't stand Abrams on a personal level, and therefore cannot contemplate his works with anything approaching objectivity - just as I, for instance, cannot evaluate the works of Orson Scott Card in any way separate from his odious personal stances. Therefore, I shall have to make up my own mind, I suppose.
I think it might have helped some of you to have lived through the hiatus after the cancellation of the original Trek, when we had no idea there even were other fans, and there was absolutely no prospect of anything new ever coming out. We'd have settled for damn near anything, even that stupid, badly-animated cartoon series that kept us placated for a couple of years, or the snorefest that was TMP (but we watched it several times each, because dammit, at least it was new Trek!). I think some of the younger fans might have been spoiled by TNG, which ran for seven whole years and was picked up for syndication even before the series ended - and it was supplanted halfway through its run by DS9, which had its seven years, and was supplanted halfway through by Voyager... You've never known a world in which there was no new Star Trek, and no convenient way (like the Internet) to discuss the old Trek with other fans. Now git offa mah lawn, yuh goldurn kids!! <shakes cane>

It's sad alright that they hear JJ's name, or anything connected to him like Into Darkness, and no they'll say anything to keep him down.
No giving it a chance, no attempt to put aside their bias, no nothing... some are spoiled off of something, all right, imo.
JJ Trek is separate from Prime Trek, and their only connection is the name Star Trek. And other than that, JJ's Trek is not bound by ANY of the same rules, including the infamous 'what Star Trek is all about' opinion that differs between many different people. I understand that, yet many seem to have difficulty... then again, some are still stuck at the 'it's not like the original ST, therefore it's not ST' argument with themselves

See, you'd think they'd have learned "rip off Wrath of Khan" was a fundamentally bad idea after Nemesis tanked. Apparently not.
