You, Farmer Romulan, were in the military, perhaps on a command track.
After Hobus wrecked all your stuff, you get disillusioned and decide to grow things. With potentially your entire family and nearly everyone you ever knew dead, the life of an honorable commander of the Empire loses its luster. Potatoes sound more engaging at this point.
But the threats of the galaxy won't leave you and your people alone just because you have a talent for growing tubers, and finally, you are called to your simple people's defense. Yours colony's population arrived here on a handful of old salvaged Warbirds (you just wanted to get away, you weren't picky), so when the time comes that you must take up arms again, a few ex-engineers from the colony endeavor to get the ships into working order. Then you, a handful of other military-trained colonists, and a few eager young men and women, fire that puppy up.
Boom. Farmer in a ship explained with virtually no leaps in logic or glaring oddities. And it took me five minutes to put together in my head.
Some of you guys seriously lack some imagination... XD

I think I like the o'bewan and Hean S'lo interpretation bettter. :P
maybe it was their darkest hour as betazed had been invaded. it wasn't so much the federation broke their policy but more sisko did, Starfleet gave the plan it's blessing but it was never an order.. the whole episode is about siskos guilt. only garak and sisko really know what happened.
however all the above never set into motion a chain of consequences which led to the federation supplying even their allies with ships or weapons. they might have repaired their ships but that was it. it just wouldn't happen. since every one had their own ships.
they didn't do this cross faction ship usage nonsense not even in the alpha quadrants darkest hour.
I highly doubt that your Romulan character just gets to fly a Federation or KDF ship for the heck of it. I would expect that when you decide to join the Feds or the KDF, that you given a commission. Remember Kira was given a commission and wore a star fleet uniform at one point in DS9, I imagine the same would apply when you pick your faction.
So it will probably go like this: Luke the green blodded ba$^ard grows up on his farm, gets angry and wants more. Maybe the Tal Shiar killed his aunt and uncle and he decides to go out and get involved within the Romulan Republic. Eventually he comes to a fork in the road were he must ally with the Feds or the KDF and he is given the corresponding field commission. Bang you are at lvl 40 or 50 and he can fly a fed or kdf ship if he wants
join Date: Sep 2009 - I want my changeling lava lamp!
I was wondering how familiar you guys were with this, because he seems to be the inspiation for Obisek to me. I figured Emmert knows Cincinnatus pretty well in any case.
It was nice to see some lore, but would it be so bad to list two dev blogs in this week, with the second explaining some romulan ship mechanics?
Honestly, I hope we get more than one dev blog every 8-12 days this season.
I believe Branflakes said there would be a more question and answer style dev blog tomorrow. I am expecting some technical goodies to be in that dev blog.
I already had to embarrassingly explain to my wife why I squeeeed at the top of my lungs while reading the Tribble patch notes about the warp cores

People don't get to leave the military just because they want to, especially not in oppressive police states., and especially not after cataclysmic disasters. Warships don't tend to be left around for people to salvage, and it takes more than a handful of trained specialists to run a warship the size and complexity of a Warbird.
Maybe you should spend more than five minutes thinking about these things before you declare your ideas flawless.
I was wondering how familiar you guys were with this, because he seems to be the inspiation for Obisek to me. I figured Emmert knows Cincinnatus pretty well in any case.
No offense but that might work for some, not all characters.
This copying TOR to a T when it comes to background, except TOR actually have decisions and also story missions as STO is just Fed/KDF/Common ... every Fed is on the same path no matter what race, class or ship were the only liberty comes from what background.
Romulans dont even get that ... *clap**clap**clap*
Maybe you weren't a commander, but discover a knack for is as the Warbirds are rebuilt?
Maybe you're one of those "eager young men and women" from my other post and wind up shooting up the command structure?
Maybe you're vengeful and are abusing the loose structure of the farmers' militia to get into the captain's seat of a Warbird to further your agenda?
Maybe you're not interested in military at all and are aiming to be a diplomat or an explorer, to try to find things or people that could aid your colony?
Seriously, imagination. It's an invaluable tool where video games tend to fall short. I suggest you learn to use it.

I didn't use any logic not already used by STO itself. Old ships like Mirandas being brought into service is fine enough precedent for a few Romulans to abscond with TOS-era Warbirds. And people can be trained to operate Warbirds - all it takes is patience and a few people who already know what they're doing. And when your empire is in a state of total disarray following the destruction of its homeworld, I find it easy to believe a few military people could decide they've had it and quit; in that much chaos, things tend to get lost very easily.
If you have a better idea that fits what we're given, though, I'm sure we'd all be happy to hear it.

His explanation is better than anything I've seen on this thread.
They've retconned the end of "Cutting the Cord", so I'd imagine that there will be alterations to Obisek's dialogue too. At the moment, since her disappearance Sela seems to have gone from empress, and sole leader, of the empire to head of the Tal Shiar in league with the Iconians/other mysterious race.
That may mean that more of the backstory for the Romulans in STO might also have been changed, so it seems to be all up in the air right now.
I hope not. Although per my previous post, the Path to 2409 does have quite a lot of lacking info when it comes to the Romulans in the last few years before 2409. Sela was Praetor, and ushered in an era of peace. Then she was Empress, and it is implied that she is a heavy handed dictator. The only allies that are close to explicitly mentioned are the Hirogen.
That does technically leave room for her to ally with the Tal Shiar, even if in secret. And given that Hakeev is Taris' science officer, it makes sense that she ends up with the Iconians. What I really hope is that she allied herself with the Tal Shiar because of the power she needed as Empress, and they made themselves so indispensable that she had to stay with them when it was revealed that they were working with the Iconians.
Of course, I can't really see her depending on the Tal Shiar that much, just as a practical matter. She's too sensible. Also because she has her own large group of allies that went into exile with her in 2386, and returned with her when she became Praetor - not to mention the Hirogen.
No offense but that might work for some, not all characters.

While the actual story of the game is questionable in its shoe-horning of players, there's no problem with players writing their own backstory. After all, it's not like there were 100,000 Starfleet Ensigns that saved the Khitomer at the Vega Colony.

The Empire was a MESS after Hobus (and even before). Plenty of opportunity for Warbirds to get lost, people to found hidden colonies, and officers to get disenchanted and leave.
Maybe you weren't a commander, but discover a knack for is as the Warbirds are rebuilt?
Besides, it's just like shooting womp rats back on the farm... :P

according to the ask cryptic responses you have access to their ships thru the fleet starbases. which means at max level since that's the rank you need to be to fly them.
colonel kira worn that uniform for image effect as it was more likely the cardassian resistance would accept help/orders/instructions from Starfleet rather than the bajoran militia. as soon as she returned to ds9 she was straight back in that bajoran uniform.
You can skip that you know, only have to do it once.
But every player has to do it once. That's at least a couple thousand heroes of the Vega Colony right there. The point is, even if the Romulan story is the most entertaining piece of STO fiction yet (and I hope it comes close) you can say whatever you want about your character and his or her origins.
Ideally, yes, there would be some choice in the matter, and more varied content. Like I said, based on interviews, I think that Kestrel has plenty of ideas (and if not, that's what hiring more writers is for). The thing is making the missions themselves, which is where Cryptic falls short. If they would just use existing assets, instead of insisting that every mission that comes out needs to be a Featured Episode, with new tech and voiceovers, they would have a ton of new content. "The perfect is the enemy of the good" as they say.
Well unfortunately we'll never get to be the Romulans we all loved from the shows.
Farmers it is, I guess.
I'm going to put on the TNG or Nemesis style uniforms and my character WILL be one from the shows... unless the story is VERY compelling. But this quoted post really encapsulates why many people are unhappy with what we know about playable Romulans.

I don't know, I think Tomalak would make a mean farmer; " Captain Picard I must protest! Your cows are trampling all over my side of the neutral zone!" And by neutral zone I mean cabbage patch.

I've got time as the patch loads for me. Lets hope its not needed.

You can find/contact me in game as @PatricianVetinari. Playing STO since Feb 2010.
If I wasn't terrified of STO eating itself when logging on to tribble I might jump on and take a look, but these days I'm SHOCKED if STO loads at all.
