    A thought just struck me.

It's hardly an auspicious start to the New Romulan Republic when just as New Romulus is being built and the embers of a new Republic are being fanned. Half the population goes to one faction and half goes to the other.

You've pretty much just written you glorious New Republic into a civil war before the Capital City has even been built.

As I said, "in canon". It was never confirmed IN CANON, that the Romulans ever allied themselves with the Klingons, to obtain their D-7s. For all we know, the Romulans STOLE a D-7 from the Klingons. I watched that very episode just a few days ago. No mention at all about a possible alliance.

you might want to watch some TNG and DS9 where they state they were Allies at one point. :P

I guess some Fed players can quit begging because you kinda got Cloaking with your new Romulan allies.

Quoted for truth! Finally the Feds. that wanted the ability to cloak so much while still being able to enjoy the Fed. content will have the possibilty to do it, without ruining Starfleet moral and ethic.
I like my Federation ships proud, without cloak, as the great Gene wanted them to be!

Also well played on the fact that we were helping those Romulans build NR since the launch of S7 and they won't be backstabbing and declaring war to the people who helped them stand on their feet again.
I'm just bummed about not having a 3-way PvP, was actually looking forward to it.

Alien-gen hybrid means that you'll be able to create custom aliens with limited filters to keep aliens on the Romulan faction more within boundaries of the somewhat Xenophobic Romulan species.

Well played on this Mr.Stahl, I do like how you guys thought of this. I believe it will give a specific flavour to the faction.

Also, seing now that these Romulans will not follow Sela, I actually have the incentive to try them out! :)

I do not like the idea that Romulans are forced to Join either a Federation or Klingon fleet to gain access to Fleet Ships and Equipment. Cos if am understanding correctly there are going to be Romulan fleets that own either a Fed or KDF starbase

And for large established fleets like {UFP} who have 2 Federation fleets(1 for mains, 1 for alts) and a KDF fleet the House of Kular, all of which have 400+ characters and will have little space for Romulans.

Now we were happy to make a new Romulan Fleet with it's own Division in {UFP} and were happy to build up a brand new Romulan Starbase, why not just give the Romulans a starbase and their own fleet?, it make perfect story sense that the Romulan Republic would be making brand new starbases near New Romulus.

    Fully agree with this post.

It makes no sense to have Romulans using a Federation or Klingon base.

After looking at all the comments talking about how FED-Romulans and KDF-Romulans will be fighting amongst themselves I have to say.. maybe they don't. It could be that the Romulans are playing both sides for what they can get (secrets, supplies, etc) until they're strong enough to break away and become fully independent again.

Well.. that's how I choose to filter it in my mind anyway. Rose colored glasses.

    From Memory Alpha:
Klingons and Romulans once shared an alliance for a number of years, beginning in the 2260s. Over the years, a number of incidents, including the Khitomer Massacre, led the Klingons to develop a deep-seated hatred for the Romulans, and the Romulans were arguably the species that Klingon society in general despises most of all. (TOS: "The Enterprise Incident"; TNG: "The Neutral Zone")

I recently rewatched The Enterprise Incident. No mention of an alliance. I'll rewatch The Neutral Zone now.

They better release more information regarding this "alliance" we get to choose. If this only stretches so far that just PvP, Starbases and Homeworlds are concerned it's somewhat ok. Romulans have a tendency of backstabbing each other, so maybe we can see their PvP mode this way.

However, Cryptic should better reconsider their stance on letting Romulans have crossfaction ships. Romulans/Remans should stick to their own faction's ships, I really don't want to see them roaming around in Defiants, Kumaris and Kar'Fi carriers.

Yeah the thought of this expansion is turning out pretty bad for me. Romulans in defiants and odyssey ships. 1 thing would be equipment another is a ships. Also the mention of a possible romulan lockbox just goes against anything dstahl has previously said on that matter before.

Considering the Romulan and Klingon Empires were allies during the 23rd century (TOS era); there's no real reason they couldn't be again. :)

What can the Romulans offer the empire this time around ?

    Singularity cores ?

For those asking at what point you have to choose sides, Dan mentioned that you'll only be able to use your aligned faction's Doffs so presumably you'll have to pick sides before you reach Lieutenant 7 (or whatever the equivalent Romulan rank is) when the Doff System unlocks?

Since you won't be able to join a fleet until you've made that choice, I guess they're going to force it on you pretty early.
In addition to adding Romulan Republic Duty Officers to existing packs in the game, Romulan Republic captains will gain access to the Duty Officers packs of their chosen ally.

During Star Trek 3 production, the Romulans were the original draft bad guys. The Bird of prey was Romulan.

They changed their minds and decided Klingons. They even stated behind the scenes the logic for keeping the ship as it was, to be the alliance they had with the Romulans and Klingons at that time.

In "Enterprise Incident" they did not steal those D7's, they stated there was an "exchange of technology" and that the Romulans were "using Klingon designs".

(Not 100% sure if Spock said "exchange" off top of head, but that was the explanation producers had in the production notes then and in Trek 3.)

We can argue all day whether production info is canon, it doesn't matter. If you only acknowledge what you see on screen, you have to ignore 89% of what's happening in STO because there are characters like Captain Calhoun at K-7 who was never on screen, he was from books.

really disappointed by this. Not only do we have to play romulans as soft and fluffy Vulcans, we cant even cause chaos in 3-way fights.

    Where's the STAR TREK man?

STAR TREK & Romulans are getting sold down the river on May 21 !

    EXCITING TIMES !!!

Don't forget -- Cryptic has also said this would be model for future factions, like Cardassians.

I would love Cardassians implemented like this! They're already tied close with the Federation, so I could get to play for the 'good cause' while receiving orders from Garak!

I think most people who truly wanted to play a Romulan faction would've been prepared to start from scratch and build it.

But apparently when Hobus went supernova not only did it destroy Romulus but it took with it every Starbase and Shipyard the RSE had and somehow managed to destroy their ability to design and build replacements.

Apparently they didn't lose the ability to design and develop brand new Warbirds though, which considering they are now reliant on Federation and KDF facilities is quite an achievement

When did it change? It's listed under your progression (Fed-side) as unlocked at Lt. 7?

    Duty Officers:
    • The Duty Officer System will now unlock for all players at level 11, regardless of their faction.
      • This means Federation players between levels 8 and 10 will temporarily lose access to their Duty Officers.
    • The levels at which Free Duty Officer Packs are rewarded have been altered:
      • Level 11 Federation Packs are now rewarded at level 18.
      • Level 21 Federation Packs are now rewarded at level 23.
      • All packs rewarded at levels 31 and above are unaltered.
    • Any Contacts which require access to the Duty Officer system have had their level restrictions altered to this new standard.

Not sure how long it will stay or oif it will become part of the may update...who knows.

A quick note: A couple people have been saying that Romulans shouldn't be able to fly KDF or Starfleet ships. But I suspect Cryptic did it that way so your Romulan toons would have access to C-store consoles, like Plasmonic Leech or Torpedo Point Defense System.

Aha! Well that's your 'choose your faction' point then because they won't want to prevent Romulans buying Doff packs from the C-Store.

This Q&A raises almost as much questions as it answered with how they will handle Romulans joining KDF or FED.

Will Romulans be able to use FED/KDF z-store uniform unlocks?

Will choosing a side be permanent and can't be undone?

If Romulans can use their own ships and ships of their faction they ally with, is their any benefit to creating non-Romulan characters anymore?

Will Romulans get their own STF ground and space sets with unique visuals? or will they unlock MACO/Honor Guard?

Do Romulans have to do Romulan rep?
