Actually if you read it properly you will see that he said the Romulans have their own INDEPENDANT story line. Seriously is so difficult to people to read and understand simple things instead of jumping the gun?
Actually, I read it as the Romulans having their own unique storyline UP UNTIL the point where you choose to ally yourself with FED or KDF. If you choose FEDs, you end up running the same FED content we've had for the past 3 years.

You would be reading it wrong
Once this decision is made, individual Romulan captains will gain many benefits through their alliance, all the while remaining their own independent faction. Romulans still continue their own independent mission journal and storyline after this choice, remaining neutral within the Romulan faction, but the choice has an impact on their progression towards end-game.
I was hoping for some unique, independent endgame content for the Romulans. Some people are just fed up with the Federation, KDF and their war, and just want to start with something new.

Will we be able to continue the story line if we don't choose a side?
Like the Romulan Alliance System? Of course you do, it sounds fine to you because you aren't Romulans, you're FED or KDF who are going to make a Romulan alt, it makes a HUGE difference in perspective.
Remains to be seen. Everything Cryptic has said to date (mostly by Mr Stahl) has been viewed with a certain amount of skepticism.
You have yet to answer with a specific NUMBER of how many new storyline missions we can expect (both before and AFTER this ally decision). Until then, i'll be content with the assumption that you are adding a handful of new missions pre-choice. Until I see a comment otherwise.
Honestly, I am not going to complain. I've wanted to PLAY a Romulan for over two years now, and I know that Cryptic will deliver on this. When it comes to an actual Romulan faction complete with fleet starbase, territory etc.. GIVE IT TIME. ROMULUS wasn't built in a day!

very interesting, how the romulans are being handled. its kinda like a 5/8 faction, that will latch on to ether kdf or fed. who they allie with will determine what temporal ship they can use, but i hope they have their own design for vet ship, those are very faction specific.
what i DONT want to see is romulans using normal federation or klingon ships, AT ALL. and i don't want fed or kdf using romulan ships ether. the only cross faction should be lock box. let there be romulan flet ships, but let ONLY romulan faction captains use them.
war birds being a new ship type, sora like the destroyers? like the breen vet, and jem heavy?
what would such a thing be set up like i wonder. theres only so many niches. maybe the war D'd should have something like this
COM sci
LTC tac
LTC eng
LT eng
with 10 turn, 30 inertia, 30k hull, 1.3 shield mod, DHC use, battle cloak, and 4/3 weapons.
in games and arguably canon romulans had weak hull, but strong shields. they were ambushers, not ships of the line, even the huge D'd.
the mogai could have
COM tac
LTC sci
LTC eng
LT tac
with 15 turn, 60 inertia, 26k hull, 1.3 shield mod, DHC use, battle cloak, and 4/3 weapons.
While personally, I would have liked a completely separate Romulan faction because now, to fully experience the new faction you need six new characters (one of each class and faction allegiance), I can say, awesome job Cryptic!
I probably will be in Puerto Rico for the release, but I am looking forward to playing it when I return.
You really think they'll give us starbases or Romulan only fleets after completely dividing and destroying Romulan unity by forcing us to fight on opposite sides? We shouldn't be able to group with Romulans on the other side since we're now effectively in a civil war.

What fight ? The Feds and the Klingons have been holding hands ever since Gamma Orionis ? :P
I read it as they have their own unique storyline, pick an ally, and continue to have their own unique storyline, although featured episode series and events like STFs will be shared.
Featured Episodes will probably have the same rewards that are available now, but separate from the other factions. I have a feeling that there will be some adjustments.
STFs will be shared though, since across the board, KDF and Federation officers can cross-team with each other.

I just thought...why should Klingons or Feds be able to fly Romulan ships via lockbox ? Feds can't fly Klingon ships. Klingons can't fly Fed ships. Both shouldn't be able to fly Romulan ships. I also object to the idea that Romulans can fly around in Klingon and Fed ships, sorry.
Not to say that I'm not still excited though.
I'm totally with you...I guess they were rushing through all the development and they had to make some concessions. They do get an "A" for trying but an "F" for what is getting accomplished.
How can Romulans who are MORTAL enemies of KDF be ending up running around the streets of Q'onos as if they are dearest buddies....they are the fiercest enemies . Doesn't make sense or even joining Federation whom they were always suspicious of.
Now its more confusing since FEDs/KDF might fly ROM ships boxes but no the other way around...This is just not logical. A FULL FACTION might have been a much better idea rather than to rush a product
Q: (midniteshadow7) Will the Romulan Faction have their own Fleet System, Starbase, and Holdings? Will there be any new Fleet Holdings?
Dstahl: This is an important question that needs a detailed answer.
The Romulan Republic was created from the ground up as a complete new faction. They have their own backstory, their own exclusive missions and episode series, exclusive costumes, faction-exclusive social hub, unique playable species, a full ship progression line from level 1 to 50, unique HUD UI, and more. What they don?t have are their own Starbases. There are many reasons why we?ve made this decision and here?s one of them.
During one of the episodes in the Romulan Republic storyline, the Federation and Klingon Defense Force will challenge Romulan captains to choose sides in the Federation-Klingon War. This permanent and personal choice forges a very important alliance. Once this decision is made, individual Romulan captains will gain many benefits through their alliance, all the while remaining their own independent faction. Romulans still continue their own independent mission journal and storyline after this choice, remaining neutral within the Romulan faction, but the choice has an impact on their progression towards end-game.
In many ways, Romulans will have the best of two "worlds" ? theirs and their ally?s. Not only do they have their own exclusive stories, ships, and costumes, but they gain many benefits of their ally. This includes access to a variety of their allies? ships, rewards, and hubs. While Romulans can?t wear the actual uniform of their ally, they do gain unique costume options, such as a Romulan Republic/Klingon Uniform variant, for example. So when a Romulan creates a Fleet, they are creating a Fleet that is open to Romulans of a chosen allegiance as well as members of that allegiance. Vice-a-versa, they?re also free to join existing fleets of their chosen ally.
Our goal is to encourage existing Fleets, many of whom have spent countless hours on their Starbases, to stay in business and welcome in New Romulans instead of splintering to go "do it all over again". We want captains to group with Fleet mates who decide to start a Romulan and entice them to ally at end game. This not only works thematically, but it also keeps the conflict focused on the Klingon/Federation War.
Now that many established Fleets are finishing their Tier 5 Starbases, we expect to see established guilds enticing all the New Romulans to join their cause in exchange for access to the best ships and gear the ally can offer. In the future, we will consider unique Romulan Starbases. For now, the New Romulans are just getting their feet on the ground and must look to the planet New Romulus as their new home and rely on the Starbases of their ally for support.
Also, a new Fleet Holding is in development, but will be launching after the release of Legacy of Romulus.
That is one confused statement.
Does this mean 'accolade hunters' for example, need to make a federation romulan and kdf romulan to get everything?
Does a romulan character have a romulan fleet with access to federation/KDF base? Do they actually join their ally fleet or have joint membership?
What about faction specific missions like No win scenario? Will the Romulans get their own or join up with their allies? Basically when is it faction specific and when is it ally specific?
So I'm confused an alternate skin for each base ship +2 Cryptic originals... so is that like 10 playable ships total for 50 levels? Anyone have a better Idea of how that is going to work?
Also, not a word about KDF updated/missions/level progression other than FEs being re-leveled. Once again, not looking so hot for KDF players.
THANK YOU...as someone how has spent at least $500 in money...not to mention time/effort/etc... on their Federation Fleet...along with the dozen or so other members in our Fleet that have done the same...THIS IS GREAT NEWS!
Sorry, I know it sound's selfish but the small return (imho) of having a third 'fleet' in the game is not worth the cost consider how burnt out most of the Fleet's have to be in this game right now. More importantly, this allows our Fleet to essentially 'stay together'.
We still get a new faction w/ new content, ships, etc. Like the article said, its the best of both worlds.
Thanks Cryptic! It's all opinion I guess but for me and my fellow fleeties this is awesome news!
Well I dont know if you can accept a few from one person but.... here is two I am thinking of....
1: Are we getting the "Raptor Gorn" Costume? That new J.J. Abrams one?
1.2: Can we expect more KDF Costumes than just spikes of death and bloody intentions?
2: Do we go on Redshirt For Testing or Tribble?
3: How did this "come to be" so to speak? As in how did you complete Romulans AND Finish off the KDF Faction which you said you'd finish before Romulans? Also, what shall we expect for the Empire?
4: What fills the KDF 1-20 Gap?
4.2: Any KDF ships possible comming up after not getting any (Z-Store) Since Last May?
4.3: Any chance of More KDF Social Maps?
4.4: Any Chance of New KDF Races?
4.5: Are there new KDF Missions?
4.6: Is there a New KDF Tutorial?
5: Is Warp Core For Everyone or Just Romulans?
6: Are Romulans Complete or Half?
6.2: Are KDF Complete or Still Half or 3/4?
7. (Personal) Do you mind these questions?
8. When shall we expect this to air?
9. What are the new skill things like?
10. How is the new Rep like?
Thank you for your time!
some of this is already available for preview on tribble.

you would think so. atm I can't call it a 3rd faction it's just adding romulans and romulan ship to the current 2 factions. it just devides the romulan people more and more. we will fight ourselves while fighting some one else war. it's awful concept. the romulans have been betrayed
Okay, so the Romulan faction is not really allied to the Federation/KDF, just the players Commander will lean towards one of the other factions and gain some benefits from it? Well ... I hoped for something better, but I guess I can live with this for now.
Still, as Romulans will be present on both sides in PvP this system will basically result in a Romulan civil war.
Also I completely agree with dontdrunkimshoot. Romulans should NOT have access to Fed/Klingon ships! I'm okay with the idea that they can get access to weapons/shields/whatever from starbases and maybe consoles, but ships? This is ridiculous. This will only result in a silly faction in which every ******n ship in the universe is present.
Alien-gen hybrid means that you'll be able to create custom aliens with limited filters to keep aliens on the Romulan faction more within boundaries of the somewhat Xenophobic Romulan species.
This is good news, thanks for keeping other species somewhat rare on the green side.
Comments
It was a good chuckle!
Wait... whaaaaaat? There will be Romulans in the Mirror Ships? And possibly even the Wells or Korath? Am I reading that right?
NEW HAIRSTYLES!?!?!?! Final-Fa-Reaking-Ly! All is forgiven.

On the one hand I am happy that I can still be a part of my T5 Fed fleet, but still a bummer it is not a true 3rd Romulan faction.....

yes they did
