Considering all the ways Star Trek bends and/or breaks physics and even contradicts itself from episode to episode one would think that planet scale in STO would not be that big of an issue.
No offense, but I find this statement rather funny since Star Trek hardly has ever done that. Especially when Star Trek is actually becoming a reality.
- Warp Drive is has been proven could actually happen.
- Transparent Aluminum is a reality
- Communicators are everyday use as Cell Phones.
- Lasers that actually stun.
- Cloaking Devices are could happen.
- Holodecks could be a reality in 20 years
The only thing that's still unsure is Transporters. It's possible to transport atoms but not large masses.
Having planets be part of the background is equally immersion breaking imo since you can never run into them. Since many missions have you transport to a planet I suspect this will happen often. It also probably leads to distortion of the image around the edges due to the mapping of the environmental textures.
There is certain limitations with games, especially as MMOs. But there are some ideas how you could mimic a ship entering the atmosphere, like a mix of trickery of blinding clouds, and a change of skyfiles. All as seamless zoning.
Again, I am not sure why this is such a huge issue really. How about a good old bug safari instead?
Example:
1) The hideous clipping / texture distortions with nebular and planets (warped image / seams)
2) Clicking on Gorn in fleet action the first time and queuing for it cause the GUI to select another fleet action instead.
Nobody said it's even a small issue. Just players suggesting some improvements, that's all.
While I agree that the Dev Team does need to go on a major bug hunt, it doesn't mean they shouldn't come here and interact with the players, maybe getting some interesting insight that could make the game better.

I always thought it would be really cool if you could mine atmosphereless planets like mercury or the moon by bombarding them from low orbit. You could use a combination of skyfiles, poly's, plane's, and physics objects to do it.
It's a space station!
What's really missing in the game are death zones around planets and suns, one of the most unrealistic things is flying right up to a planet and colliding with its surface, the only way it could look more comical is if it was accompanied by a loud gong sound. You should never be able to get close enough to a sun to see how small it is, you ship should burn up long before you reach it, same with planets, your ship should start cooking the minute you make contact with the fringe of the atmosphere and if you actually get near the surface it should be instant destruction.
If something is not broken, don't fix it, if it is broken, don't leave it broken.
Ya, in the above scenario, the Moon would no longer be in the actual playable space. Instead, it would be rendered into the sky. This means you would no longer be able to fly over to/around the moon, but it also would now appear to be a more realistic size/distance from the Earth.
if i'm not mistaken one can not simply fly around the moon at the moment anyway,
the moon is sitting directly inside the maps wall, so you can only move around like the front half of it... .... iirc
As an update to putting planets in the skyfiles. I've tried this a bunch more, and while I think it makes the system maps look a ton better, and the planets feel enormous, as they should, there are a few people on the dev team that don't like it. The problem is that when you fly around in space, if the planet is in the skyfile, then it is fixed in place. There is no sense of movement without other stuff in the actual map to judge it against.
Think of it like the moon at night. No matter where you walk, the moon is always in the same relative position from where you are. If you're walking in a forest, you get your sense of movement from the trees passing by you/in front of the moon. If you are on the ocean (presuming you can't see waves etc.) your sense of movement is vastly diminished.
The bottom line is I have been overruled, and it is unlikely we'll be seeing more of that.
I'd have two solutions for that, I wish you could consider it:
1. Kill those you say who doesn't like it.
2. Add debris, little satelites, asteroids, rocks in the 'orbit' so it gives a movement impression.

Zombie Alert!
In case you're unaware of the forum rules, which would seem odd based on your post count, you can't post in a thread more then 30 days old. If you have something to say about a subject start a new thread - as this thread will be closed when a Mod or Dev discovers it.
STO is about my Liberated Borg Federation Captain with his Breen 1st Officer, Jem'Hadar Tactical Officer, Liberated Borg Engineering Officer, Android Ops Officer, Photonic Science Officer, Gorn Science Officer, and Reman Medical Officer jumping into their Jem'Hadar Carrier and flying off to do missions for the new Romulan Empire. But for some players allowing a T5 Connie to be used breaks the canon in the game.

That was so people could read about the subject and what has already been said. IE, to keep people from rehashing the same things over and over. That has nothing to do with the Zombie rule on the forum.

There's a lot of scale issues. Planets are too small, shuttlecraft and fighters are too large, as are most space stations.
I've never seen any space game do realistically sized planets, and to scale shuttlecraft would be next to invisible. But the out of scale space stations are a little harder to explain. Probably it's just to take into account of the number of ships around them, in the TV shows DS9 never had 20+ starships docked around it at once.
Ahem.
I believe the Klingon Fleet that was about to invade Cardassia would like a word with you.

Or something.
That's no Moon...

The discussion was remitted here by a game developer.
