You just have to love this guy - he's the only one there that tries his hardest not to dance around tough issues and smack down players hard.
Dan Stahl really should run for political office - he's got that politician talking points down pat.
Al - he just says what he wants and we either have to like it or lump it.
I don't know - a lot of players are spoiled and don't like his attitude - but I think it's refreshing.
Al I certainly hope you go through with your planned nerf to cannons - it's a fantastic Idea!!
(Mods - this is mostly just a general comment about Al based on several interviews and not fully related to the last interview - except for the nerfing cannons part- so I hope it does not get merged)
Al : Please for the love of God go through with your planned nerf to cannons - don't worry about what players whine about(not that you do - just saying)!!
And yours is not a whine? uh huh. w/e

I changed the OP to reflect better a comment from his last interview - about nerfing cannons - and my opinion of it.
The main point was that I like a dev who is not affraid to step into the frying pan. I think from listening to all the devs - Al is definitely one who is not.
an excerpt of a conversation on the DHC changes and other things....
Player1: they gonna nerf DHCs rather than fix the beam and lower cannon system.
Player2: I've said it before and i will say it again, <edit> is an idiot..really wish he had left instead of some of teh other devs that have left over the years...
Player1: No doubt, He is definately going the wrong direction on this. Its gonna hurt KDf fairly well if the nerf is big enough. We use cannons way more thn feds by design of our ships. I hate this TRIBBLE.
Player1: The fact that healing is so over the top still and DHCs where all that really punched it is going make PvP slower.
Player1: I would have prefered they buffs Beam Arrays instead ( even give them a low ACC mod inherent) fix all other beams and subcannons accordingly and be done.
Player3: He is a fed fanboy, he has always disliked teh KDF, this is the guy that last year decided to increase turn rates on fed escorts while saying KDF raptors were fine as is, despite having a broken <edit>
Player2: also from what someone told me that managed to listen to teh whole rambling interveiw teh only new KDF Ship were likely to get anytime soon is yet ANNOTHER cruiser...like we need more of those
Player1: looks like <edit> the flimflam man is crawfishing again.
Player1: we are supossed to have "substantional" content in the May thingy. His words
Player3: i never believe a word that comes outa <edit>TheUntrustworthy's mouth
Player1: I would hope that meant a new tutorial, some low level content to draw new fresh players, and some ships, costume stuff. Not a large part of the May thingy but substantional.
Player2: From what i can gather that substantial content is a tutorial revamp and thats it
Player1: <edit>.
Player3: maybe a couple more fleet ships if were lucky
Player1: thats not of any substance on its own.
Player2: nope, a new tutorial is worthless if they dont reintroduce lvl 1-20 with content to go with it and a emoval of teh neccesity of being a lvl 24 fed before KDF even opens
Player1: we need content to draw the new player and shinnies to keep the old players interested otherwise they never grow the new KDF fans with no content to level up on and the old guys get bored and stop spe
Player1: spendng money on the game. they lose a small but none the less important revenue stream.
Player2: A lot of teh problem is <edit>..when he left for 6 months teh KDF got a shed load of ships on store, after he returned we got squat again...he has NEVER wanted to do anything for teh KDF
Player2: I havnt spent a cent in 12 months, i wont buy fed TRIBBLE and i already own nearly all teh KDF stuff apart from teh awfull bridge packs
Player3: I just get sick and tired of them saying 'KDF stuff is coming!' then when it gets close to them having to deliver they change it to 'we cant justify it atm..maybe later'
Player2: I want a 5 tac console raptor with a decent (non broken) turn rate, feds have what? 3 or 4 now and we have none
Player1: I would like a fleet BoP with a Ensign Uslot, a fleet Somraw Raptor platform with 5 fore/2 aft - five console Tac, and a Regent Class fleet ship at Tier 5 thats what the BortasQu should have been.
Player2: yep, bet we dont get anything like those though
Player1: <edit> no, they fear us as it is.
Player1: Doesnt mean they should go for the revenue potential of making sadi Fleet ships which cost us $20 a pop.
Player2: from what i can gather the ship were getting is a bigger Neghvar from what he said..so annother space whale like the bortas.....and they wonder why some KDF ships dont sell well
Player3: They just seem to totally ignore what type of ships KDF players ask for, yet when feds demand ships they get just what they want
Player1: It is a shameful habit from way back in STO's history. Sadly.
Player2: And thst why i hate <edit>, he makes teh ship decisions and its obvious he has a complete fed bias when it comes to ships
Player1: They have given us many things though over a long period of time. I can not say otherwise. I just dont get why they dont jump on the oportunity of finishing the KDF in the next few seasons and be done
Player1: they would have it built and only have to worry on endgame and shinnies. The RSe could be the next full scale project unhundered by us.
Player2: They dont want to, its obvious by this point....they just keep hopeing that if they keep neglecting the KDF it will die and they can then move on to teh rommies
Player1: It does seem that way.... I hear MWO is fun.
Player1: but its not Klingon or Star Trek.
Player2: i was daft enough to get a lifetime to this so ill probably stay untill they eventually shut teh KDF down
I can say that the chatter about its effects on the KDF, among other things, is on the KDF fanbases minds.
I hope they are wrong about all that has been said though but history doesnt give it a good feeling.
I just find it funny that this type of thread like the OP has started pops up again to rub other players noses for fun.

I listened to the whole 4 hour broadcast and almost every time he said something that I disagreed with, he followed up by qualifying the statement in a way that showed he thought through the issue... and most of the time wound up suggesting the counter-examples or ideas I would have posted here before I could type them.
By and large, anything he said that MIGHT have been seen as blunt or insulting was something that, given time to speak, he was able to place into a meaningful context or reveal possible exceptions to.
Six months ago, I was very iffy on the guy. I went into this last interview thinking he was a guy who needed to explain where he was coming from more... and by and large not only did so to my satisfaction but in such a way that I wish I worked for a guy like this. Others find this thread trolling becuase everything you put in your opening post could have been said in the actual Geko thread in the PvP forums without creating a whole thread that appears designed just to fish for reactions from those whom dislike Geko's policies or his DHC nerf idea.
Yet you made a thread you knew would garner just those sorts of responses.
First of all, I listened to the four hour interview. He never said he was berfing cannons or DHCs.
What he did say (paraphrasing) at the very beginning is he thinks the beams are working as intended as cruisers and sci ships are support ships and not DPS hitters and will never do the damage of escorts. He then went on to say if he received enough complaints that beams needed to be adjusted it would make more sense to lower the DHC's to the beams than to raise up the beams to the cannons from balancing adjustment perspective. He has no interest in adjusting DHCs unless he has to. He was also concerned how upset it would make escort captains if that were to happen. I think people are taking his comments way out of proportion and he was even chuckling a little when he said it.

Ok seriously Roach? Look most KDF still use the Plasmonic leech, so Al's "nerf" to cannons - aka increasing their power drain - won't have as big an effect as you might think.
And Al is right about this one - why make beams stronger - cannons builds are gettting out of control powerful.
I am not a beam boat lover- the ships i use are:
Heavy Qin (cannons)
Heavy Bop (cannons)
B'rel(torp boat)
Fleet Patrol(cannons)
Fleet Defiant(cannons)
Breen(cannons)
Fleet Excel(beams/and sometimes tried cannons)
Fleet Nebula(beams)

You're crazy. Gozer will always be my favorite dev and Geko has a long way to go to reach the heights that Gozer achieved.
Gozer's biggest highlight for me was telling the players they were wrong about there being a content drought (during the time when DStahl commented on the content drought ... keep that in mind), by saying content was continually produced during that time period. The content he was referencing? Things like the Counselor Troi uniform and Section 31 uniform.
Hey! CONTENT!
Geko just doesn't like smelly min-maxxers and their ability to break systems by playing the game. Gozer, he actively trolled the players by telling them content creation included uniforms put on the cash store. Hah.
That's why he'll remain my favorite dev. Well that and the fact that he created barely playable, buggy "content" and some of the least enjoyable end-game scenarios of any MMO I've ever played. STFs were pretty wretched for a long, long time.
But while we're discussing our favorites, Wishstone will forever remain my favorite Cryptic employee. Of all-time!
I miss the iron hand of Wishstone quelching discussion and the sharing of information. The volunteer Mods do an ok job of moving topics here and there, but Wishstone had the forums on lockdown. Literally.

Well I am refering to someone who is an active employee/Dev - who still has a good say in what does and does not happen in STO.
My only wish is that Al would make more of an appearence in the forums - it's not like he's affraid to take any player guff - maybe he's just too busy to bother.

This.
I've always liked Al. Always enjoyed his interviews. He's never said anything that's upset me personally.
I agree that he's always given concise explanations regarding decisions, that's always soften my points of view.
Have have to admit tho, I wasn't aware of any plan to nerf cannons.
All my characters use them, even my sci.
I will admit that I wish they would find some other way, seems to me the nerf bat gets swung a tad too much, in my opinion anyway.
He's not actually very blunt. Seems to me like some people simply look for an excuse to be offended.
It's not really Geko's fault or responsibility that people either don't understand plain English, or choose not to understand it in order to create "drama."

There isn't a plan to nerf cannons.
What he said was a response to a question about power drain. He said beams are where he wants them to be. And that if players kept complaining about the gameplay, the option he'd pick is to increase the energy drain for cannons. He basically is saying if this continues to be an issue pushed by thread after thread, player after player, complaint after complaint ... beam arrays will stay as is, and cannons will be adjusted to drain more power.
There's no plan to do so.
But his solution to the way beam arrays stack up right now is to adjust power drain for cannons.
It's a four HOUR interview. He said quite a lot of other things too.

So if people keep complaining about something completeley justified, other players who have almost nothing to do with it get a NERF?
Wow that what i call a good example of "Divide et impera". I think i should would write LOL now, but i think it's not funny at all.

Then you do not know where the issues lie with this change if it happens. Its got nothing to do with DHC power consumption or how much power the average KDF who happens to use a PL have on hand.
The issue lies in DPS versus Healing. Currently DHCs are the only thing that can put a dent in healing and resistances.
Remove that ability without adjusting healing levels and you end up with an imbalance in PvP.
Leave beams as they are and add extra drain to DHCs will not help Cruisers, Engineers or even science clear the DPS designed PvE content any better than they do now.
So you end up with further imbalance on PvP and PvE for non-escorts does not change at all.

Agreed. Even though the radius sucks, I still use one DHC on my Galaxy-X for that extra punch (I have a really weird build..). And even with all guns to maximum, it takes a Subnucleonic Beam to remove the healing powers before I can kill anything. All weapons need to be able to overcome healing powers, and all healing powers need to be able to overcome all weapons. I know that sounds like an oxymoron, but disables, roots and holds need to be just as viable as dee pee ess, and that's where the balancing act would come in.
So it's not Cannons that need a nerf, it's Science Skills that need a boost.

I don't think he really wants to nerf cannons. I think he just wants to not talk about beam arrays (or cruisers) in interviews?
That's how I took his commentary. Granted, I'm still not a huge fan of his work on things like the Nebula or the overall direction ship slot/layout/evolution went so, I'm ok with him taking some heat for the interview.
But it was a four hour interview. I can barely listen to Bill Simmons for more than 45 minutes at a time on a podcast. And Simmons is entertaining as heck and wrote one of my favorite books of all-time.
If Cannons are nerfed, then his paycheck should also be nerfed an equal proportional amount.
Nerf whiners not Cannons.
So if I make them better, can I get a raise?
There is no plan to Nerf Cannons. NONE!
The question I was asked was basically "my beams are not as good as cannons, can you make them better".
My feeling is that beams are fine. They are WAD and don't need to be made better. The outlier are the cannons, and, in a perfect world (see what I did there), I would bring cannon power drain in line with beams instead of making beams more powerful. The analogy I was suggesting is that if everything good, and one thing is OP, its healthier for the game to bring the OP item down in line with all the other items instead of raising all items to the level of the one OP item.
My comment was suggesting the question should evaluate what the real problem is.
I meant no subtext to suggest if enough players complained, there would be justification to nerf cannons.
Again, we have no plans to nerf cannons in any way. I cant make it any more clear than that.

Well that's good news, but I don't think that beams are "okay". I honestly don't think that any weapons other than cannons and torpedos are "okay". I just think there needs to be smarter/more use of disables and roots. We really do need better science powers.

I can agree with that. The big picture isnt just cannons or escorts or even cruisers or science. Its many small things that add up to a bigger issue.
For the record I got no angst against Geko even if it does seem like he has one with the KDF at times, I just dont see where nerfing DHCs helps make the bigger issue smaller.
For the record my favorite was Wishstone. She always seem to take such an interest in me.

Oh yeah, thefreedictionary dot com knows it.
Yeah, I would much rather see other things get buffed.
That's another area where Gozer has it over Geko. Gozer left Cryptic. Then came back.
Never count Gozer out.
It's not really Geko's fault or responsibility that people either don't understand plain English, or choose not to understand it in order to create "drama."
I Love his work regarding the Galaxy Class and his professional attitude when it comes to make this ship at least playable.
/sarcasm OFF
There isn't a plan to nerf cannons.
Nerf whiners not Cannons.
R.I.P
Muffin?
