Throughout the history of mankind dates to the end of the world have been set. People seem to wait eagerly for that day to come, and are disappointed (or relieved) when it doesn't come. Even in the 20th and 21st centuries we continue this thing even though we are technologically advanced and have better knowledge of the world.
True there seems to be ancient knowledge that states that it will come. Nostrodamus (spelling?) seems to predict it. The Mayan calander ends at that date (but could be mistranslated and still says nothing about an ending). It's late evening now and nothing's happened yet. Not that I'm worried about it. After all, life's way too short to worry about something you have no control over. If it ends, it ends... and that's it.
So what makes people so obsessed with the end of the world? And what thoughts does everyone else have about it?
*sings* "I like Gammera! He's so neat!!! He is full of turtle meat!!!"
"Hah! You are doomed! You're only armed with that pathetic excuse for a musical instrument!!!" *the Savage Beast moments before Lonnehart the Bard used music to soothe him... then beat him to death with his Fat Lute*
People are making way too much of this Mayan Calender thing... do they not realize that hundreds of years ago some poor shmuck was carving the thing into stone? The only reason the Mayan calender stops is the guy said to himself "I am several hundred years ahead on this thing and my arms are about to fall off... I quit!"
Vice Admiral Ross
and others too numerous to name...
Why are people so obsessed with it? Because everyone needs THEIR generation to be special, to be important, to be the best generation.
We talk about how awful and stupid and silly old generations with their weird dark ages and Inquisitions were, and how much worse they were before that. Nevermind most of what we think about the dark ages never happened and much of what we believe about the Inquisition was invented later to make what was going on at that time look less despicable by comparison. Then we make up lies to belittle the generations that follow us - the youngest current adult generation in the Western world has the lowest rate of crime, drug use, or unwanted pregnancy of any generation since we've kept track, but ask anyone over 50 if they believe the same. Then ask that youngest generation what they think about their education compared to their elders.
Doomsday locks those lies forever. It saws the rungs off the ladder with you at the top, so no generation will ever surpass yours. And if there's a "worse" generation after yours, you get to blame them for bringing this on you.
Not true, people under 30 are completely responsible for the decline in crime rates in that time. Crime rates people over 30 have been stable and over 60 have actually exploded.
The majority of Drug users are under 20
The majority of petty criminals are under 30 (or over 70 in some cases)
Plus of course there are countless minor crimes commited by the young (relationships under age for example)
Also look at all the youngsters who have extremely limited education
Read them over. Violent crime and sex crime rates in ages 10-24 are down 77% since 1994 alone, and 1994 was the first uptick after thirty consecutive years of decline. Even the sudden resurgence of youth violence in 2010-11 didn't managed to bring rates back to 10% of what they were in the 1950's, and that's not even corrected for the fact that things that were once considered acceptable youth behaviors (or at least were not considered illegal) are now violent/sex felonies. Petty crime rates are down even more.
You can have all the opinions you want, and all the "Oh just look at all the" NO. Your opinion is on one of the most statistically studied facts in the entire world, and it is wrong.
Even allowing the BoJ's unscientific surveys, the only age group showing increasing crime from generation to generation is those over 50, and their 180% per year increase in unreported violent crime by seniors is questionable at best.

no they aren't
many teenagers commit a "sex" crime with their boy/girl friends every week

Drinking underage
Smoking underage
Sex underage
Driving underage
carrying a knife
carrying a gun
accessing websites while underage
all crimes

US crime figures are not even in the top 10 most studied theorys
and aren't a fact
use drugs ONCE and you are a criminal
drink one beer under age you are a criminal
etc

Thank you for trying to use knowledge against someone who will reply with idiocy like this;

i think why people are so upset about it is they cant log into sto and grind for the day if they are dead.
How the hell did we get to theocracies?
People worry about the unknown, many fear it. The end of the world means death and nobody really knows what happens after that, the ultimate unknown. Religions claim to know what happens, but have no real way to prove it. Science claims that death is the end of consciousness, but has no way to disprove the possibility that consciousness continues in some form beyond death, so the answer remains an unknown.
As for being disappointed, it's not so much disappointment that the world didn't end, it's disappointment that the world didn't change in some significant way, that some new adventure didn't take place to lift people out of the drudgery of their mundane daily lives.
If something is not broken, don't fix it, if it is broken, don't leave it broken.
Science claims that death is the end of consciousness, but has no way to disprove the possibility that consciousness continues in some form beyond death, so the answer remains an unknown.
You can't disprove something that doesn't exist.
At its core, random apoclypses are religious in nature. They depend upon invisible guiding forces to the universe. Supernatural causes. Some are full throated Revelation stuff. Some are just moonbats replacing old timey faith with crystals and pyramid builders. But all are nonsense. The universe is full if ways to kill us, no need to make things up.
And we're on to theocracies becaus trollvax has the attitudes of someone who'd enjoy living in one and isn't afraid to post them.
Prove it. Without quantifiable measurable proof it's just theory and opinion, not fact, science does not have all the answers, not yet and not for a very long time. The same can be said for religion.
We've now drifted into the realm of philosophy which frankly I have no interest in indulging in in a gaming forum.
If something is not broken, don't fix it, if it is broken, don't leave it broken.
A Human being consists of a lump of meat a pile of bones some fluids and an electrical charge
The matter of course continues to exist in some form (you can't destroy matter merely change its state)
The Electrical charge eventually fades
but the bit thats you
your Animus your soul your spirit call it what you will
is as eternal as the cosmos itself
Because its thought
the one thing that actually Can travel faster than light
It does not have to. In fact, it makes just as much sense to say it doesn't exist. Because if we have some life force, where is it? In which part of the body does it reside? Why can we not detect it? There is no fundamental law of the universe which states "living things must have some mystical life force." Your thoughts and the way you think is based upon how the different regions of your brain are interconnected. There is no reason to say "There must be some life force inside us all." Although, just to be clear, I'm not saying that it is impossible either. I'm only saying that it is possible to explain life without some unknown factor.
On the topic of why people are obsessed with the end of the world, there are a number of reasons.
1: Ignorance & Fear - People don't know how everything works. We might think we do, but we don't. And people are afraid of what they don't understand. They don't understand how the Mayans, an ancient and comparatively primitive people, could make an accurate calendar so long ago. Therefore they think the Mayans have some special understanding of the universe, because they don't understand it. They also don't understand how the long-run calendar works. They don't really know the Mayan myths, so they jump to conclusions. The 13th baktun, (i.e. cycle of the long-run calendar) which is what 2012 is, is not supposed to mean the world will end. The original stories only say that some significant changes will begin to occur.
2: Reality - The world WILL end. Perhaps not today, or tomorrow, or a thousand years from now. But eventually, it must end. Whether it be during the sun's final stages, a large rock hurtling into the planet, an alien attack, or ourselves, eventually the Earth must be destroyed. The fact that it was created at some point in time mandates this. Since it had a beginning, it must have an ending. Ultimately, everything that we know must end. Our solar system, our galaxy, perhaps even our universe, will one day cease to exist. This scares people. They don't like it. I don't like it either, but it's reality. Nothing can last forever, and that's just the way it is.
Also before you rage at me screaming "You're wrong!!!" keep in mind this is solely my opinion, based on the facts that I know and what I believe to be true. Look these things up for yourselves and believe what you like, but don't try to convince me I'm wrong. You won't be able to do it, just like I cannot convince you to believe what I believe.
It does not have to. In fact, it makes just as much sense to say it doesn't exist. Because if we have some life force, where is it? In which part of the body does it reside?
