Ignoring all but the OP for a moment...

[*]I'd like to see the DOff system re-examined, particularly the way they are being generated - the random generator is COMPLETELY borked. Pulling over 310 Engineering Fleet DOff boxes, I managed to get less than 20% Eng, the rest Ops. 60 Eng out of >310 boxes. THAT IS WRONG, particularly with the jacked up prices coming and the starbase demands of 60/60 Eng/Ops! Heck, the sheer volume of Sci DOffs I pull in a week from random recruitment is insane, half my pulls or more seem to be Sci.

I never liked the term "Random" to be used to the doff generator at all - fleet or packs or recruitment - because as far as all common sense terms it is set and not "random" at all.

They definitely need to go in there again and tweek this "randomness"

I think all those Trekkies from the 60's that saved the show back then should band together and buy the game.

Bjo's amazing feat of convincing a few tens of thousands of people to buy a stamp (she's pulled it off twice, once for another season of Star Trek, and once for getting President Ford to name the first test Shuttle "Enterprise") doesn't nearly equate to convincing enough people to contribute money so that you can get at least $50 million together for a business venture that you INTEND to be unprofitable; especially considering once you've GOT the company, you can't do a thing with it unless you can pay 40+ people competitive salaries for years going forward. Which only happens if the game is profitable...

I'm thinking allowing a bunch of computer class kids from the local school and whatever fans want to manage would work a magnitude better than what we've seen in the last two years.

STO is missing two vital components to any Star Trek "Enterprise:"

    Passion!

    Management (especially)

    Content suggestion:

*Reintroduce the old style combined STF space/ground missions as "elite veteran stf" -
To que must have the 75 stf missions run accolade(?) ,double the current elite difficulty spawns. Rewards double dilithium / elite marks for completion and a very rare mk xii random item for each team member if optional objective gets completed for both space and ground portions.

*Raid mission - using Sol/Qo'nos maps again a combined space ground combo.
Fight ur way across map thru npc/ player(optional) to beam down point. Ground portion is a capture and hold map version of ESD/First City for x min vs elite npcs/players.
    Reward?

I have to wonder if there is some basic silliness going on under the hood, like instead of randomly selecting one of the 6 Departments (then randomly selecting one of the specializations), or one of the numerous (and uneven) Specializations, it pulls by DOff name or something... and that is somehow completely out of wack, with 4 times as many named Ops DOffs than Eng... ?

My understanding from previous interviews with Jack is that STO (and CO) was designed on a budget that estimated a 100k subscription base, *and* that we had exceeded that long ago. Look to the the 144k Facebook followers as a sample - I expect there are more by far, that's just people willing to associate with the game publically on FBN. I'm not saying we have huge numbers, I'm just saying this game has been operating profitably for a long, long time. Anything showing losses at Cryptic likely includes development costs for NWO and what ever is hidden under the as yet unannounced "Top secret" game on their under development page (since there was a development page)

My impression is there are about 350k people who login when there are content updates and about 10% of those spend money.

If you're just looking at spenders, it's probably still over four times the audience for the comics.

One reason I think a partnership with IDW would be good. The other being that IDW has all the actor likeness approvals so they could show us what a few of the classic characters are doing in the STO timeframe, CBS permitting.

Y'Know, do a trial balloon: a mini-series with Riker, Obisek, and the Deferi. Every issue comes with a DOff pack promo code. Enter all 4 and get a costume.

One thing I still don't understand is why after TOS they made Star Trek so removed from sex - I know it was the 60's - but back then they had gov't censors on sets and still TOS was like Sex-Trek

I think they should have continued the "sexiness" tradition of TOS right on through everything in Trek.

99% of the Sex back then... ...Was In Our Imaginations...

They never crossed the line... they just dashed right up to it and came to a screeching halt.

(like going to a commercial right at a juicy point, then coming back showing Kirk putting his boots back on)

The only Overt Sexual Act (for the time) was Kirk kissing Uhura.

Hell...Star Trek V: TFF showed more of Uhura's Skin, than ANY Original Episode.

I think kirk kissed every girl is space - and he came to the point where they were about to get busy and moving down out of frame dozens of times.

for only 79 eps - how many times did that happen in the 500+ eps of TNG/DS9/VOY?

They showed more overt sex-capades on the Daytime Soap Opera's back then...

And this was well before the evening TV Family Hours were even thought of.

I would have been much better if ever few eps they had some other female crew member grab him and drag him into her quaters saying:

"I heard you were fully functional"

..that would just demean Data as a character.

Not a very good way to to keep most people tuned into the show...

Unless it happens to be on the Playboy Channel.

Your probably right most men would be offended by constantly being used as a sex object over and over again by different hot women.

Instead of talking about what they are doing - why don't we try to come up with some civil ideas of small things that they could implement to offset some of the new changes?

I would like to see the ability to buy more doff space - maybe an expansion to 600 slots

I would like to see an increase in the refinement cap - perhaps to 10k per day

I would like to see them allow fleets to make some customization options to starbases - like fleet flags, a big holo-emblem of you fleet badge inside and something on the exterior.

    So what about you guys?

    Yes to all the above.

Put the Veteran back in Veteran... unique badges for length of service, something....

I think all those Trekkies from the 60's that saved the show back then should band together and buy the game.

The random bajillionaire star trek fan is also acceptable.

Or all those guys from Bioware that ran away from TOR.

While good in theory, we're merely trading one understaffed group of devs... with another amateur understaffed group of devs.

And there's also no one Star Trek to rule them all. Each of the 5 TV incarnations have their own fan bases and those fan bases have their own notion about what Star Trek is about. The Abrams' Trekkers are different from pre-Enterprisers. Hell, even my nephew likes the phaser fights more than the brinkmanship! Try building a pen & paper game appealing to all of them...

All that said, STO however has that flexibility. Its the only Star Trek game that has good support for player-created content. Its not perfect, it doesn't feel like a huge sandbox, but it's the only one out there. The best we can do now is set up a Starfleet clone in EVE online and hope it lasts until the next GoonSwarm mass defection/troll attack.

Cryptic, to steal from another IP, is our only hope.

"In this dark hour, you must shine.

You must light the way for the lost and oppressed.

The final frontier awaits and althought you sail a ship upon a sea in storm, YOU wear the uniform, you carry the tradition.

Valor and sacrifice are your watch-words.

Whatever comes, whatever finds you, stand tall, hold fast - YOU are a Starfleet officer!"

Something to ponder over all this negativity.

I really hope they update this trailer - increase the visuals/graphics and have it played as a trailer with the previews at the theatre just before the next Star Trek movie plays. It would be nice if it was the final trailer to play before the movie starts.
