I see what you're saying about taking the leaver penalty drbilmd, but it's also true that if people leave (eventually) because there are more than one noob in the group, then they won't see why they've failed.
I'm experienced in STFs, i'm not the best, but I consider myself pretty decent. I'm not an elitist, i actually try to walk them through the STF. The whole gear thing won't be as effective as my suggestion below.
I've seen everything there is too see, from a Rainbow build cruiser sitting above the Kang defending, to everyone but me entering the control room on KA ground elite.
So here's a solution that will, I believe, benefit everyone. It will enable new players/newbies/noobs to learn the maps/strategies etc.
An accolade that is unlocked on successful completion of all the optionals on normal 3 (or such a number) of times. We can also make it account-wide.
This will enable the new players/newbies/noobs to learn the map, and reduce the chance of being carried through. This will cut down the amount of lesser experienced players entering Elite STFs drastically.
Cryptic should also include pop ups at Mission start or queuing window (birdie tells me theres a new one coming) that highlights important things such as strategy/communication/ship gear etc etc etc.
How does that sound. Its not elitist either! Two/three birds with one stone
I'm the guy that uses unconventional builds, and don't fall to the normal. I also don't believe in "No-BS" TRIBBLE, it's in the game, it's ready to be used. Think Clint Eastwood in Heartbreak Ridge.
Making someone play a few normals (sure, why not with optionals), to unlock elites on an account is of course doable. I see no drawback in such procedure.
The question is if it would make the quality of players better. But that's where the mandatory optional comes in play. Optional in (even normal) pugs is not guaranteed, so it might force some players to look up tips on the forums or joining some of the "teaming channels" (like EliteSTF).
Adding the optionals as a requirement is a potentially bright idea, blockbusters.
Come to think of it, are these channels listed somewhere, maybe it would help if they were mentioned on the wiki in the STF sections (Is there an active editor knowing some of those channels reading?).

Ugh, NO. I don't EVER want to touch anything as filthy as "Normal", and I DESPISE tutorials. I'm proud to say I've NEVER played a Normal STF and I don't intend to start. I've watched it done before. You learn nothing from it. Everything people do in Normal is utterly wrong, wrong, wrong. You don't learn to ride a bike by practicing on tricycles.
If anything, the scrubism would just get worse. Since everything you learn in Normal is WRONG, what you'll get is people who come out of normal and THINK THAT EVERYTHING THAT SUBSEQUENTLY GOES WRONG IS YOUR FAULT, because *THEY* know how this works.
The fact of the matter is, most people are stupid and fundamentally incapable of learning. Period. When I first started the STF thing, I knew I had absolutely no idea what the hell was going on. I told people this. I asked, "What do I do?". Veterans, of course, are never shy about telling you what you should be doing. And you know what? I did that. And we won. And we did it again. And this time, we got that damned optional.
Hell, I still don't understand how some of these things actually WORK, but at least I know what *I* am supposed to be doing in them.
have you seen what has been happening to the game when they change a few things? paying any attention at all? and yet you want them to rewrite code because you're all to stupid or lazy to not pug? not the devs responsibility you don't have friends, make some in this thread eh?
don't pug and no problems, if you pug it's your responsibility, you pushed the button, no one stood behind you with a weapon demanding you press it. you're not victims...game works fine the way it is. devs quite simply have better/more important things to do (i hope) than modify the game to accommodate a bunch of people who can't figure out there's an alternative already in place that others do use.
find a channel, find a fleet, find some people to go with you, advertise in ds9, advertise in the forums...all these options to avoid pugging....but hey, that takes effort on your part. so is it just laziness that you don't go for the other options? much easier to push a button and gamble then whinge about it later?
seriously...are you all that fracking lazy and feel that the game should modified around your laziness?

Then I'm sorry for all those people you ended up with trying new builds (or even learning STFs).

You'll still be much more likely to get the optional in normals using some of the "elite" methods. If a couple optionals were required (on a whole account at once), it might push more people to find the additional info, to find a dedicated channel. And the more people do that, the more players are available for an enjoyable ride.
The whole purpose of that would be to push more players to learn (as many people need to be pushed to learn).

Don't make ARC mandatory! Keep it optional only!
