When I was new I was logical and figured things out for myself since no one wanted to help.
Doing the STF`s against the borg I learned that you have to first take out the nanite generators first by seeing how the damage done to the borg cube was quickly repaired. I figured through logic with those green energy beams that they must be repairing the cube.
Some new players can figure stuff out like this but others are a lost cause and need to have their hand held.
I did a public STF last night it seems like now I am running into people that dont know whats going on. 2 months ago when I was active before I was too busy to play every public STF went through easy. But as of last night every one I played I was falling asleep at the computer cause these guys were taking so long to get the job done. I tried telling them dont worry about the raptors or the bop`s I will protect the kang like Ive done so many times before but oh no when they start coming they leave the nanite generators and cubes and come help me when I didnt need it. Their shields are failing constantly and I am taking the hits and shruging them off.
Those kind of players need to understand to listen, not everyone saying they can handle something is big headed egotistical and cant fight their way out of a wet paperbag.
In Anarchy online, we used Froob for Free-noob, a free player who may or may not not what they are doing.
After a while, us froobs enbraced it and proudly wore our fr00b t-Shirt! (actual item in game)
AO also has newbie zone critters called 'Leets' and 'eLeets' though
I have taken the effort plenty of times to attempt to explain strategy in space STF's to other players. If they request help or announce that they are new at them, I always provide help. Otherwise, it's hit and miss, but as time has gone on I've tried to be more thorough...in order to be certain that I've explained things to players who might be new and also so that willful noobs have no excuse.
Unfortunately, it does seem like there are a lot of players out there who repeatedly ignore even polite advice from multiple other players, and as others have said you can allocate roles in an STF only to have one or two players ignore this and waste their time shooting at your targets, which is a waste because you can't leave your post to them. Several times this past week I've called probe-guarding duty on the left or right side in Khitomer Accord Space Elite only to have another player eventually meander over and start "stealing my kills." After they ignored my request for them to move on, I finally gave up and told them they're on their own and that I was going to move to offense. Every time, they moved on at that juncture which meant I had to rush back and resume guarding...no surprise there.
Anyhow, whenever I'm entering a new team mission which I haven't done before, I announce that I am new at it and request guidance. I then try my best to learn how things are done. Unfortunately, it seems there are a lot more players out there than is reasonable who do not communicate and do not attempt to learn the ropes. For some players there may be a language barrier, but over time you'd think dedicated players could figure out what certain phrases like "[insert name here] please stop" and "do not blow the gate" mean!

first let me make it perfectly clear that i don't like the term "noob", but i am an advocate of free speech, so use the term if you must. i prefer "new player".
i ask if "noobs" are logical because when i first started playing i was using logic. i was eager to play the game and did not know there was a star trek wiki or this vast forum full of information. i just wanted to play.
i would see players state comments like "10%". my logic told me to destroy the damn gate and things would quit coming through. people would holler and scream at me, calling me noob and making all kinds of bad remarks. no one ever took time to explain the 10% to me, but i was being logical.
i had a rainbow ship at one time; again perfectly logical. i was ready for anything. no one told me i was being ignorant, they just called me a noob. using logic i noticed not a lot of people used rainbows and something was not right, so i started thinking about it. finally some kind soul explained it to me along with the fact that this sto wiki existed and the forum.
i think many noobs, new players, are using logic as i was. i would like to see a playing environment where rather than call a new player "noob" and curse them; i would like to see players explain why the "noob's" logic is wrong.
the logical guys says "live long and prosper".
I understand not explaining a tactic like "10%". However, Rainbow boats are used by people who don't look too closely at the game mechanics and how to optimize them. Rainbow boat suck because you cant boost their damage as high via Tactical Consoles as you can using 1 single energy type.
That's not to say Rainbow boats are completely unfeasible. It is possible to beat the normal versions of the STFs in T1 ships; its just more often than not, Rainbow boats are an indicator that the player using it may not know what they're doing.
