Its setup to install automatically in the background with no notification to the end user. edit: Not suggesting that you do so. Just saying that upgrading is going on unless you specially go in and turn it off. We had a small issues with some users with a net upgrade a few months ago.
Same suggestion as has been made in the past. Run a force verify. If that doesn;t help, reverse the setting of Disable on-domand patching. Both of those settings are located under the option link of the launcher. You have to exit out of the launcher each time you make a change.
how long are you letting it sit there trying to do something?
