i played it this weekend i liked it but honestly if i wanted to play nights of the old republic i would pull my xbox out it was nice don't get me wrong but for 15 a month it wasnt worth it to me yet, but if i take another break from STO and CO i will check it out to see how it has or hasnt improved to me
its not an easy thing to live with, let me tell you.
That line in Empire has to be the dumbest moment in film history.
Rebel General: A death marks not an easy thing to live with.
Well, yeah. no sh%t! Guess Captain Obvious got promotoed to General! Pretty sure thats why they're called death marks and are in the realm of things-to-avoid-getting-if-at-all-possible. Every time I watch that movie I fast forward past that line.
So since nobody responded, I take it none of you tried a ranged character...lol looks like I will be one of the only people not rolling Jedi/Sith out of the gate.

Smuggler on the side of light, and Bounty hunter on the side of darkness for me
So I've been giving it another go since they invited me back. One of their patches fixed my broken character so I could continue where I was. I'm a Sith who keeps making light-side decisions at every opportunity. I expect to be executed at any moment.
I'm pretty sure at this point we are all aware of this game. Its been the largest source of MMO hype since Warhammer Online came out a few years ago. Last weekend was their final beta weekend, and the final game is slated to be released on Dec 20. With SWTOR racking up pre-orders at an alarming rate will STO be able to stay afloat? Or will it make like a straw hut in a tsunami?
Played two Beta weekends and pre-order my Collector's Edition a couple weeks ago. Overall for a BETA, TOR is more ahead than the almost 2 year old STO that has been taking backwards steps for some time.
STO will hurt even with the F2P desperate attempt. STO won't die though, people will leave, get bored, come back....get bored, rinse, repeat.
So since nobody responded, I take it none of you tried a ranged character...lol looks like I will be one of the only people not rolling Jedi/Sith out of the gate.
I'm Trooper all the way first...only reason why I'll roll force user is if my uncle rolls one, and I'd level an alt with him haha.
Otherwise I'll go Trooper, Bounty Hunter, Imperial Agent, Smuggler, Jedi Knight, Sith Warrior, Jedi Consular, and then Sith Inquisitor.
The DOFF system isn't really grabbin me...it's a fun diversion for a few min....but...other than that Season 5 is a tax.
Xenor, I am happy. A fellow trooper!! W00t! I hope we wind up on the same server, so I can team up with ya sometime.
Also, @hort: I am gonna play a light Sith down the road just to see how it is, probably an Inquisitor because I want the Togruta companion.
In general, with my testing I played Jedi enough I can wait for a bit for a Force user. I'm really looking forward to making a cool ranged character first. My main thing is I just wanted to know if it seems to anyone that has used ranged type, if their combat effectiveness is better than a force user.
Like many others here, I have also tried the BETA over last weekend... lol
I used the first hour trying to figure out how to shoot and move and key bind everything... I used then the whole weekend and Monday to Rank my Character to level 19...
It was fun, though, after playing it, I found that it's way to much of a true MMO game but more on the Single player side of it... I actually felt like I was playing one of those early '90s story telling games where I had to do special things to advance in the game. It was nothing more then that. After awhile I found this VERY boring. too much running back and forth, too much dialoge, too little custamization in any aspect and the Upgrading system for weapons, powers and armor where strange at best to figure out.
It's Star Wars, and Star Wars deserves so much more especially in the year 2011 when the Tech is so much better then in previous years... I was expecting a STO like universe there and only found a lossly built CO world with hints of WoW behind it...
STO may be lacking a lot, but they don't lack the efforts of wanting to create a true Star Trek Universe with True Lore.
No... I wont be joining the Bandwagon to join in on TOR... Don't need the Cartoony graphics or travelling grinds of the game...
I think the major issue most have had, something I have attempted to stress on the Star Wars The Old Republic forums has been then went in to the game expecting it to be something it isn't.
Many have focused directly on what is similar to other MMOs, as opposed to what is different.
Regardless of what I can say, people will always hate on the game ... this apparently also seems to affect their judgement on other aspects of the game as well.
For example people saying it plays "sluggish" and "isn't polished", frankly that is just bullcrap. The game is very fluid and responsive to play on a decent ISP connection, even tried it on my AMD Fusion (A6-based) I have here and it was fine with a constant <45ms latency even with a full server.
There are glitches, but for the most part it is THE most polishes MMO release candidate (with another week or so before release) I have ever seen. It has some issues, the graphics for the beta were scaled down (deliberately, final release size is 32GB while the beta was 21GB with NON of the story content taken out... it is possible to fully reach the level 50 cap)
The one aspect everyone seemed to praise has been the voice acting / dialog system. It is fantastic, but what I think escaped the notice of many is that WAS the focus for the game... to make an MMO with a deep and rich storyline that can rival single player games yet capable of co-operative gameplay.
To me it has actually surpassed my expectations of, it also is so strong that they make even the mundane feel interesting. Problem is you HAVE to loose yourself in the storyline otherwise you will NOT get any enjoyment out of the game. Those players who feel the whole point in playing an MMO is to hit the level cap and attain the rarest gear, while in SWTOR you are pushed forward by the story.. if that doesn't interest you then you WILL hate the game.
The reason I liked STO initially was because it had an interesting PvE storyline, SWTOR takes that to a whole new level.
If I want gameplay and depth to be my driving force, I wouldn't play anything other than EVE Online.
The problem I have with STO right now is that the game doesn't even know what it wants to do. The lack of story content in favour of features... but then the features introduced have very little depth. I don't mean complexity, frankly the Duty Officer system is too complex. What I mean is DEPTH. There is a difference.
STO may be lacking a lot, but they don't lack the efforts of wanting to create a true Star Trek Universe with True Lore.
Oh that is so much Bullcrap, they keep moving further and further away from the source material of Star Trek. While SWTOR is so deeply entrenched in the lore of Star Wars in-particularly the Old Republic universe that Bioware created with KotoR.
Star Trek has so much to offer, which the most of what STO does is nod towards the source material sometimes providing specific cameo appearances of staples within it as a form of fan-service.
Also, @hort: I am gonna play a light Sith down the road just to see how it is, probably an Inquisitor because I want the Togruta companion.
I made a point to *not* look up what characters get what companions. I wanted to be surprised. I only realized what I'd be getting when I saw about 100 identical versions running around the tutorial area....

I hate how companions are nothing more but pets....and the rail shooter. Otherwise TOR has been fun so far.
Hell, STO pretty much copied the DOFF system from TOR's.
As someone else mentioned, that hype can backfire badly. They hyped Age of Conan heavily when it came out and the most die hard Conan fan I knew gave it a pass at launch. And he'd been looking forward to the game like it was the second coming. Not to mention the first couple months of a new game's life tend to be the most buggy and unresolved so while I might try TOR eventually, I'm happy waiting a while before I give it a shot. Meanwhile, STO is giving me an experience I've wanted since I was a kid - being a starfleet captain of my own ship and crew - and honestly not doing a bad job of it at all. And soon it will be free. Also, we have some voiceover work for our missions too, like the Cloak Intentions chain. It's a great feature but not something I'd pass or fail an MMO on, personally.
Hell, STO pretty much copied the DOFF system from TOR's.
Fail comparison.
TOR uses your player-pets to complete "Doff like" missions. STO uses a separate roster in a card-game style system. Not a copy, and not even really comparable, other than you can kind of call them both crew management.
The thing I did like about TOR pet missions was I could send my underling off to sell all of my low level gear. That was nice for keeping the inventory clean.
The thing I hated about it was the woefully dull character models and the space-on-rails. Lego Star Wars has more engaging space combat.
Both have good points. Neither is the death-nell of the competition.
When you make silly comparisons you only hurt your argument.

Actually Xenor's comparison holds merit as the premise of said systems are the same, only difference is in the way they are executed. I don't think he made a "silly" comparison whatsoever.
The overall point is, for a science fiction fan looking to spend their gaming dollar, Star Wars: The Old Republic is far and away the more immersive and complete experience as opposed to STO in its current form.
Yeah i am infactuated with SWTOR as well, its quite a lot of fun and the story missions are indepth. I also like how you can specialize in a certain class
I think im going to put STO on the back burner, I am done paying so much money for this game and having things just fall apart and now with F2P, this is a big slap to the face of those paying members who have paid for Life time/ C-store items, like I have in the past.
People are now being 'forced' to get items off of the C-Store with this whole F2P move, well that is if you want the neat stuff, and when was dilithium a currency in canonically. I have heard so many people complain of soooo many bugs in this game (voldermont) being the most notable for us pvp'ers. I think its time for me to hang up the STO jacket for some time as the game has really become bug riddled mess which a lot of veteran PvPers have just come to hate and ultimately quit.
The only thing that keeps making me come back is that I like star trek, but to see the way cryptic is handling this is just sad
Heres to hoping bioware and EA handle SWTOR better.

Well said, its sad that cryptic has had way more 'release time' (for lack of better words) in this game than SWTOR, yet SWTOR looks way more promising.
EDIT: Playing SWTOR rite now, cant wait for its release. BETA testing FTW.

Everyone is entitled to their opinion. I liked aspects of TOR, but after three years of development, I was expecting to be more impressed. Really the only impressive thing to me is the quality (and amount) of the voice acting and the tight storylines. Other than that, everything else is pretty generic.
And the sheer amount of running back and forth over the same ground got really old.

Actually, it is about the same if you think about it:
Cryptic: One year development, two years live
Bioware: Three years of development, none live yet
Makes you wonder what STO could have been with two more years on the shelf before being launched.

Well there is 'sprint' and quick travel to help save from all the un-necessary ground bit, but so far in my beta-testing exp. i can see this game is going to be a hit or atleast take off better than STO
I played in a Beta Test weekend, 11/25, and while I only got to play for 2 days I played as much as I could during that time. So I can see my self playing TOR a lot in the foreseeable future, at least until I have played all the classes. Then I expect I will end up in a situation similar to the one I am in with STO, playing only when there is some new content or to play with my fleet.
Just out of curiosity - is the land speeder I saw in a gameplay video at MMORPG.com the fast travel option or is that a "mount"?
Hey, Varlo buddy! You can get a STAP (a little mini flyer) in the digital deluxe or collector's edition, or you get speeders further on in character advancement (like the level 20's or 30's) or sooner if you're specced into the cybertech crew skill.

I can see me ending up getting a big bag of [best edit that out] and a collector's edition, no matter how much I want to resist both! lol
All game releases since WOW have been compared to WOW, nothing new there. Even Start Trek is like WOW with nothing more than go there and kill that, broken story lines and such(Klingon/COOP/WAR).
I expected much more from STAR TREK when I joined in Beta, I foolishly expected a grand all encompassing space detail which would let me set course for "the second start on the right" and see where it took me.
But the one thing that Star Trek online is missing is true exploration, not to mention mission choices that provide options besides just killing everything.
And while space is ok, and thats a just barely ok, from a flight sim background it is pathetically limited.
With that said this is a STAR TREK ONLINE FORUM, yes its ten forward but this is not the place to discuss Star Wars The Old Republic, No matter how superior one might believe the latter is to the former.
I played both "semi-open" beta weekends. I got two SIth characters up to the high teens, and a Trooper up to low teens (only spent ~hour or so with a jedi).
My impression was its a much more flushed out game than STO with an obviously larger budget.
The things that actually caught my attention: Full voice over for missions of course, VERY good musical score and sound effects, also rather good visual effects for skills and such.
The things that annoyed me: Almost no detailed character customization, annoying UI, no ship customization, total garbage space combat (lucasarts rail shooter from the mid 90's), too much running around (STO spoiled me there)
It was better than I expected honestly. The storylines are what make the game great, as did the voice acting. It really reminded me of Mass Effect but as an MMO.
HOWEVER I discovered a huge issue once you leave the "newbie" zones... About 90% of the quests once you leave the first zone are the same as they are for ALL the sith or all the jedi (basically only two quest trees, but with a hand full of specific-class quests thrown in).
That means there isn't content for 8 separate storylines, but just a little storyline content for the 8 mixed into the main storylines for the two main factions... That saddened me after playing 4 different charecters through the entry zone, which was almost completely unique for each class.
So, while the game is really good, I discovered that the content was going to run out REALLY quick. I was already starting to spacebar through quests I already completed with another character and blow through the chat menus. I don't see this game having more than 1-2 months worth of content, and the actual gameplay itself wasn't good enough on its own to make it worth while.
In terms of STO vs. SWTOR, I honestly don't think these two games have much in common. STO is space heavy and the unique part of the game while SWTOR is all ground (ignore the space content, its not worth mentioning really). SWTOR is traditional with new and improved story telling, while STO has the unique gameplay aspect to it.
I could easily see playing both, but I'd rather spend my money on a game with good storytelling like Mass Effect 3 or Skyrim than spend an insane amount of money on generic MMO with the same kind of storytelling aspect to it.
I haven't played TOR at all - I've certainly heard about it, read about it and seen videos.
I'm an STO Lifer but I've just ordered TOR.
The best description I've heard is "If you loved KOTOR 1, then you'll love this".
In truth, I absolutely loved KOTOR 1 and 2, so thats why I'm looking at TOR
If it doesn't live up to my personal expectations, then no loss - just put it down for a few months and come back to it, same with STO.
I'm fortunate in that I have that option - but what I do not have, is the time to play 2 MMOs.
I grew up with Star Trek AND Star Wars, so I have equal respect for both. One isn't necessarily 'better' than another - they're just different - same as STO and TOR I'm guessing.
Got jammy enough to get into 2 previous beta weekends. The game was like a smack in the face and knocked my STO tinted classes off, and to behonest it's exactly what i needed, i'd forgoten how much i love Star Trek as an IP, music, atmosphere, characters and i realised STO hasn't got any of the IP that i crave.
Gameplay suprised me the most though, i went into TOR expecting it be pretty standard stuff compared to STO, but i loved it, took me a while to sort xpadder and bindings out, but once done i was blown away by how different the classes were. Agent in particular was fun, reminded me of mass effect, very clever use of cover, a bit like we see in many episodes and movies of Trek.
As far space combat goes it's an arcade blaster(i love), but so is STO to me only with cooldown timers(not complaining love STO space combat). But TOR has got more Star Wars attached to that arcade blaster than STO has Trek, so it gets my sub.
