I got my TOR CE yesterday, and thought I lost the figure's lightsaber, but found it. Now if I can get on the server my character is on to play it. (Servers that were on pre-release are always overloaded with very long wait times).

Server waits and the limited storyline, is going to be the prime factor why I'm going to still play STO as my main MMO. But it's nice to get away from the Cryptic greed and the boring STF grinding for a little while.

... Why on earth would you hope that, instead of hoping that they continue to make a product that actually tempts you to come back instead?

Some people and their hate... sheesh.

I've been in the beta and now been playing the early access for TOR, and they're not really comparable. TOR has TRIBBLE for space combat (it's solo and not at all free-form) so STO wins in the space combat. Otherwise SWTOR is basically WoW in Star Wars, but with voice acting and a better storyline for each class. The graphics, being more cartoony, make for a smoother-running game than, say, STO (which is heavily detail-oriented). Even besides the fanbase differences, they're both going to continue to appeal to someone.

F2P for STO means that I'll be balancing my time equally. SWTOR is the shiny new toy, but it's not so fantastic that it'll absorb me like, say, Warcraft did when it first came out. I've been there and done that; this is just a new spin on it.

i try log in sto and wtf is with the sound? another kick in my TRIBBLE?
nevermind... if i want great and super-duper space combat i play "black prophecy"

yes sto has ground and space but suck in both

It's such a good thing that people have different tastes, then, I guess.

Well, the Queue was certainly annoying, but that is to be expected.

There was probably one drawback to the early access - that a lot of servers already had a population and at launch, the newcomers probably evenly distributed along all servers, leading to some getting very full and some on a lower load.

But the Beta and the Early Access probably also reduced the "launch rush", and had them better prepared for spikes. The Queues aren't nice, but far better than lag or disconnects, no doubt about that.

I wish Bioware all the best in their endeavour too, but OH MY GAWD the community over there is... vicious.

The forums alone are like the scariest bits of a WoW forum with even less of the even-headed members to put out the flames. Thankfully etiquette in-game doesn't reflect that as much, but a few people are still... wow.

Makes me really thankful I can have meaningful dialogue with all of you, even if we don't see eye to eye! These forums seem far more mature, ridiculous complaints and all!

That was to be expected. The playerbase is mainly composed of all those doomsayers that have been plaguing this and other MMO-communities during the last months.
Of course, everytime TOR shows so much as the slightest bit of flaw, they'll go into full ****-storm mode, being afraid about having to go back to their previous MMOs and getting laughed at by the players who stayed there.

Which kinda sucks, because I don't want them back!

Are you talking about the forum community BEFORE or AFTER the forum Purge? The communit fyor the 3 years before launch were amazing, the threads mostly useful / helpful. After the Purge, the forums were made useless and childish.

Having been here from the beginning, I'm inclined to disagree... it was a mess, but it wasn't as bad.
Here's the distinction: we had a LOT of people who were (justifyably) upset at the condition STO was released in. There was some vitriol, and a lot of whining. The doomsaying was about standard (and by "standard" I mean the equivalent to, say, WoW). The aggressive, idiotic undonstructive posts were fewer, and made by a number of people repeatedly.

SWTOR has a forum whose every thread (or thereabouts) has angry (and I mean RAWR ANGRY!) posts and comments directed either at the developers, or the other community members - often both! The actual constructive criticism? Yeah, that's pretty rare I've found.

I'm totally open to being wrong. I'm also entertaining a theory that perhaps it actually IS about the same, it's just that the population over there is so much larger I'm running into the aggressive/nasty/useless comments and threads more often. It still doesn't make me feel any better about it, though.

Worse still (for SWTOR) is that they've attracted a large number of the WoW crowd. Last time I was on a WoW forum, posters hadn't matured and the hate never stopped coming. I have to give props, as much as we have our complaints about STO (pages long of them at times), we're a pretty constructive and proactive group by comparison.

I'm talking currently. I only just registered on their forums when I got my early access. I guess I missed the constructive posts and hit the Wall of Whaa. I'm of the mind now that I'll just avoid their forums entirely.

Leveling has plateaued for me on Alsderaan. I went back to Tantooine for the bonus series.

My least favorite planet was Nar Shadaa. So... much... running... around.

I loved Balmorra though. I completed tye bonus series and loved (loved!) the siege on the Republic base as an Agent. Single coolest quest chain in an MMO for me.

That said, Cryptic might want to develop the other 75% of the KDF faction. SWTOR, for its flaws, has excellent differences between faction and class quests.

How are you finding the Republic side of things?

I've played a Sith Marauder and an Imperial Sniper (the Agent's questline story is AWESOME) but the Republic is just so.... blah. I can't even force myself to level past FIVE, let alone get off the starter planet. The story just does not jive with me.

I can't stand the cheesy Jedi Knight story. I like being the only good man left in a corrupt organization--rather than the choices as a Jedi as either kitten daycare leader or baby panda seal clubber. Bioware's morality system is too polarized on the Republic side for my tastes.

However, my tastes are not everyone's.

Right now my highest character us a level 30 imperial agent. I love the character: he sticks it to the Jefi/Sith religion (evens calls them out on it), tries to do the right thing amongst so much corruption, and tries to bring order to the Galaxy through just means.

Yeah, that's pretty much how I feel, up to and including the Imperial Agent main; my playstyle is a tad different than yours though. ;). My sniper is ruthlessly devoted to the agency, gets and abides by the whole "we do the job nobody else wants" ideal, but without being sadistic or overly moralistic.(I'm still sitting at net 0, or I mighty be at -50 now, even as far as I am in alignment. Kaliyo hates me for it)

I have to say I like your Republic characterizations: Kitten Daycare Leader and Baby Panda Seal Clubber should be title choices to just drive the point home that that's how it feels to play them.

Did you READ the SWToR beta boards? I did, and they sure as hell wern't any better or worse then the STO beta boards - esoecially in the last month prior to SWToR launch.

And right now (as expected) SWToR is having the same type of 'launch era' posts with equal amounts of praise, flame, and nerd rage as ANY MMO launched since EverQuest. The thing is, most people feel it's a solid MMO, but raise the same concerns IE - "Will I still feel like subbing 3 months from now after I've done everything?" - so it'll be interesting to see what the first post launch content patch from EA/BioWare will have; as well as when it will happen.

Time will tell, but I really wonder if BoiWare/EA will hit the expected goal of 1 million subs retained in the long run. <---- And from most reports that number ISN'T 'in the bag' for them by any means.

If you are talking about the Testing Forum, yes, it was pointless to even look there.

I'm talking about the generalized "forum" that existed before the Purge. Many threads were helpful then...before the dark times...

TOR is nothing but WoW with lightsabers and dialogue. I was very excited for that game, but that excitement is now gone, after playing a bit of it.
It is a generic MMO with added dialogue options and I'm sure that if it didn't have the SW logo, it would be half as popular, but that's life.

The space combat is pretty much non-existent for a game which has "STAR" in the title, planet exploration is your average zones with different landscapes you find in the gillion fantasy MMOs out there. I prefer STO's approach of actually exploring the galaxy and going from planet to planet.

TOR is a much more linear and instanced game than STO and that is what is keeping me here. STO needs some better social systems, making groups and group missions a lot more meaningful and give more feeling to the fleets.

Cryptic has to come up with some improvements overall to the general gameplay systems, because the only real competitor is TOR's name, not gameplay.
