My community team pointed me to the various threads on crafting and I have to admit that the changes to the crafting system on Tribble were a complete surprise to me. I spent today with the team working through what was supposed to be done and what actually ended up on Tribble.
The short news is that we did intend to make some changes to crafting, but that the version on Tribble is only partially complete. All of the even ranks are missing. The even ranks are supposed to be present, but with some adjusted crafting costs between the even an odd ranks.
I have my team working on getting the crafting system into the shape, and we're projecting that we'll have it up for you to look at in the build going live in two weeks (around Thurs Oct 20). I'm very sorry for the incomplete version being accidentally pushed to Tribble, and for the delay in getting it fixed, but the team is working on it now.
Thank you all for your diligent testing and feedback!

Just scanning the comments in this thread, it seems that most of the concern is about quality of gear acquisition V. how gear is obtained. These are valid concerns but not my main concern. My concern is that crafting aside from what you can make from it is just not fun. I would like to see a challenging and interesting crafting system where part of the fun is in the making of cool and unique items. The Star Trek IP could lend itself to a very interesting system, this is not currently reflected in the game. Yes the crafting should be balanced against the new C-store options and STF's but I would also like to hear from the Devs on ways that they intend to make the process of crafting a bit more interesting than watching paint dry, clicking and watching paint dry again.

And 'Community Team' would be... Stormshade. Thanks Stormy! And thanks to Stephen for taking a look at this and acting on it in... really pretty fast time.
+1 for sdangelo! Good to hear and I am happy with the way you explained what happened. Coming out and saying something didn't go right and that you are going to get it fixed earns great respect in my book.
I am hopping to award more points in two weeks when we get a chance to see these words come to fruition.

Wow, thanks for that heads-up! I'm.. a little bit floored right now. You acknowledged it, admitted that the crafting system's actually meant to improve (in a way that I think most of us agree with), and you even gave us a tentative timeline. You rock!
No facetiousness intended at all, which might be a first for me. Thanks!!

This is a load off my mind.
I wonder if something like the incomplete crafting system is why Feds have no cannons at the common vendor? Been fighting myself to not think that F2P will be Star Trek Cruiser On line. JK

Thank you for communicating that to us. I appreciate that. Its good to hear the Executive Producer answer our concerns. The current crafting on tribble scared me, if it went live how it is then Cryptic would anger a lot of people.

I'm extremely pleased to read this. I sincerely hope that crafters have the same or better access to items that we have on live.
Thanks, Mr. D'Angelo for assuaging the fears of the tinfoil hat-wearing conspiracy theorists who were trying to foment discord with their disinformation and fear-mongering.
I hope that we'll be able to craft Mk XII and Mk XIII items in the near future. Let the Mk XIV gear be the stuff available from the Breen vendors for running STFs.

For some reason I picture a whip cracking in the air...:D
TY, sir. I found it hard to believe that it was intended.
The short news is that we did intend to make some changes to crafting, but that the version on Tribble is only partially complete. All of the even ranks are missing. The even ranks are supposed to be present, but with some adjusted crafting costs between the even an odd ranks.
Here's what I don't get: what possible incentive is there to make odd-mark items? If you absolutely can't get what you need to make the even-rank equivalents, then why even bother crafting? Just buy stuff on the exchange or use white items to hold you over. Unless there's a good reason to make a Mk. III phaser instead of a Mk. IV, like the III is purple and the IV is blue, or you can choose from more damage types or bonuses than you can for the even-mark items, it's just wasted development effort.
Also, was the change to Exploration zones to remove anomaly data drops an error? If not, I guess data costs are going to skyrocket again. With stuff like this and the dilithium farming that will be all too easy for professional MMO farmers, I don't have a good feeling about the state of the game economy after F2P goes live.

First of all, The Odd level stuff is so that I can craft it and sell it to YOU on the exchange! I suspect there will be a slight reduction in cost, so that those of us sitting on stacks and stacks of Data Samples and budget them based on where the demand is and what will sell. If anything thing will give us greater versatility in what we can craft and the selection of which will be on the open market of the exchange. Secondly, the Data Samples are already back in the game, yes it was an error. Don't worry about the economy with the changes (waves hand) You're going to like the new economy, Things are getting better all the time.
With the Crafing changes coming to be pushed out, will the Players that are already maxed out in crafting stay maxed out or will they miss some R&D Points?
I really hope not. That's already happened once already.

I agree, we'll see what happens though. I'm afraid this may not happen until the next full season release.
