Interestingly, I communicated with the CA State Tax Board about being taxed on Cryptic Points (back when they were CP) and the STB said these virtual points for virtual items should not be taxed. Wrote me a nice letter and everything, which I forwarded to STO... Nothing ever changed of course.
I'm curious where the disconnect is, that STO still thinks it's ok to special tax Californians...

I find your statement of communication with the California State Tax Board, to be suspect on 2 counts
1st. It is not the State Tax Board, it is the State Board of Equalization.
2nd If you read the linked document http://www.boe.ca.gov/pdf/pub109.pdf you will find that California Law requires the collection of sales tax on internet sales.
I would hope that this clears up this matter for all California customers.
As for foreign currency exchange rates, Atari set a price that best matched the price they were charging in U$ currency at the time. It is not possible the change the price as often as the exchange rate fluctuates, this means that sometimes overseas customers base rate (before VAT) will be more and sometimes it will be less the that paid by stateside customers. It is not intentional and if you are displeased with the way exchange rates work I would refer you to your respective government entities and potition them to assist in the creation of a more standardized world wide currency.
The VAT is not 40%. It depends on where in Europe you live.
The price for the tokens in another currency is no longer directly connected to the $, either. That's the new fixed price we have set for this since we cannot adjust the price by fluctuating exchange rates every few days. The exchange rates between currencies change every few hours even.
As an example: 500 tokens now:
5, 4£ or 35DKK.
To compare this with the previous price for 500 tokens:
4.56, 3.94£ or 34.63DKK
Since this was often something we got complaints about (remember the threads that the current currency rate compared to the USD was false?) the price for tokens is no longer calculated by or based on the US $.
As we all know,Atari is firmly opposed to any kind of discrimination and believes in an equal and fair treatment of all its customers. With this in mind I have one question: When will the US base prices for Atari Tokens be adjusted upward,to be more in line with the European base prices for the same Atari Tokens?
This may very well be the smoking gun, or at the very least a base to get this clarified.
Where does Cryptic stand legally in this?
Is it legal to charge extra (after the customer agrees to pay the original price) and call it 'tax', even though the STB claims otherwise?
Guys, if you wish to have legal discussions, then you need to have them in another forum.
These forums are not a legal platform. The moderators cannot comment on legal matters as we have not had legal training. What we can communicate, we have communicated. But if you seek to make this a discussion for lawyers and courts, I sadly need to close now and ask you to not do so here.
