Someone inside of Cryptic might want to call an ambulance for the moderator reading this thread ... (they are NOT going to believe this one.)
I would like to post the ONE thing that I would gladly spend "extra" money in the "C" store on. (yeah .. I know ... ME.. )
That is a model of my "favorite" ship that I use in game.
Without mentioning the name of that "other MMO" that sells the "figure print" of a players favorite toon, let's just say that the technology is there to reproduce a 3-D model of our toon or (in this case) a ship. The details, including the correct paint and customized vessel can be reproduced to the exact manner in which it is played in game.
Would I actually spend money on that ??? If the model was large enough (for the ship I'd say approximately 8" long ) AND in a clear plastic case for display ... you bet .. up to $150.00 US.
..... someone better call that ambulance .. I just heard a distinct loud THUD ... (as they just collapsed and hit the floor)
Considering that I suggested this very thing in another thread here, you know that I'll happily support this cause.
oops .. sorry ... my bad !
just the same ... I do think it would be cool if we could get them. THAT I would go for ! Let's face it we really could use some sort of tangible item to have on the shelf from the game ! What a really great way to have longer lasting keep sake!
Depending on how the ship model is formatted it could technically be exported into an online printing company like shapeways or printed on your own home 3d printer (like the cupcake cnc) through thingiverse. They don't have to be that big, about the size of the old Galoob Star Trek MicroMachines.
I tweeted @shapeways about the star trek online ships and got this response:
I contacted the development team to see if they can make them available, in the meantime NASA have free files.
I'm guessing there are copyright and license issues with CBS when an intellectual product transitions to the physical world.

Apo Agathos
IMHO that should not be such a big thing. After all CBS would get a SMALL slice of the pie for every model sold (2-3 maybe 5 % tops ... dunno for certain ... just guessing). BUT as long as they do it should (if anything) give them a little more change in their pocket. It's their stuff soooo . why not ??
BTW.. the more folks we get supporting this idea the more likely Cryptic will at least take the steps to contact those who have the equipment to get this done. Even still there is a lot of steps to take. It would be nice to see the first steps taken in that direction though.
(please note: this is just my thoughts on the matter.)
I didn't know there was another MMO doing this. However, I know Rock Band was offering your characters as figures for a while. It got discontinued. Maybe not enough people like this idea.
Honestly, while it would be neat to have a little desktop model of my ship, I'd pay just as much of more for a figure of my Captain. My girl Captain, at least. I'd say my Bridge Officers, too, but I know how expensive that can get...

At least one other MMO IS doing it. I have one on my shelving unit at home ! Even though I've left that game to play this one, I still have that as a reminder of the fun and good times I spent .. my sons are still there. I got to do some thing on that game that few men my age are able to. Kinda a really cool thing to have.
And if it were available (even at a greater cost) .. I'd love to have a replica of one of favorite toons in full dress uniform standing at the base of a nicely done replica of the ship.
Your not the frist to post it. They could even sub contact to the other MMO so no money out of pocket just profit to STO.
Well, to tell ya the truth the best I can remember the "other company" that does the figure prints is independent of the MMO. They simply do ALL of the work for ALL of the customers of that game who order the sculptures. ( a pretty good arrangement actually). Had I stayed with the game another year and got some of the high end gear from crafting, running with a few of the raid groups (via special invite from my sons ) I would have made a second one. If we ever go back, I will go after the good stuff and see about getting another figure print.
IMHO it's the single best way to have a keep sake that will be around for years !
I'm game for this. I'm always looking for a way to spend my disposable income! Depending on the price, I'd likely get one for all of my captains ships... so 5 captains, with 5+ ships each = $$$$$

hehehehehe
IMHO this is one of those things that once it catches on .. there will be a LOT of multiple purchases. Mine included !
Signed.
Would look great between my Enterprise lineup and my other random Fed ships. I would prefer that they be made to the 1:1000/1400 or 1:2500 scale to match most of the popular ship model kits out there.

????
1:2500 is probably way to small
The Art Asylum models (roughly 12" long for the Enterprise E ) might be too big ??? (not sure)
But if the model is at least 8 to 9 inches (again using the Enterprise E for the example) ... that might work. Add to that a figure print of the "captain" of the ship at or about 4-1/2" tall (slightly larger than those you see at the store) Custom paint to that of the toons and ships we use in game ... and IMHO that is a "win-win" for everyone !
I haven't got a lot of disposable income for it, but I'm sure I could save up for a nice model of my main starship. That would really be neat. I'd spring for that much, at least.
In case anyone does NOT speak Euphemism, the "other MMO" is World of Warcraft, and the "other company" is FigurePrints. Though I think the term is that they DID them, because I don't think they still do - or if they do, they're not updated for Cataclysm. Sorry to derail your thread, but that bugged me, that whole trying to say it without saying it - JUST SAY IT ALREADY!

yeah .. a really nice momento of the hours we invest in game .. (and here)
Signed, as long as either playmates or diamond select toys were behind the project, and I could hang them from the ceiling with fishing wire like I have the other Star Trek ships.
I'd like to see this as well. Players pimped out ships and toons turned into toys or models (as long as they're quality and hit TRIBBLE), would definitely be a great idea. Maybe they could sign a deal with the company that did the TNG action figures so we get something like that.
I do not see how this idea would be possible, since it would cost a lot to mass produce all of these differant ships plus they would be relitively unique.
Its a great idea but i dont think it could happen

Simple! There are tons of companies out there similar to Cafe Press that create custom items on order for a fee. The company that does the WoW stuff more than likely charges a premium fee with a small portion of each sale going to the games developers. It's really a pretty simple idea for those who would like something like their ship and such and yet another source of revenue for Cryptic as well. Everybody wins!

actually my friend the individual models are made as they are ordered. the resine used is a powder... and formed 3-D based upon the 3-D mesh provided by the company making the models (in this case Cryptic .. by permission of CBS of course).
The painting is done by use of the same 3-D model file. The information is translated from a completed file that is used from the in game data, and simply used by a 3-D "printer" .... I need to see if I can find a link on the subject that is not related to an advertisement link (so as not to break forum posting rules). I've seen the technology in use from a demo file. It's absloutely incredible !!
please note disclaimer: This is not intended as an advertisement for ANY manufactures product. This is intended ONLY as a matter of a demonstration for the technology that is available for this topic of discussion. I am quite certain that the companies that provide this sort of service have their OWN equipment available to complete the product that a community like this is requesting. I do hope that this is in no wise offensive or in violation of any forum rules established by Cryptic.
Final note: please pay particular attention to the last minute or so of the demo.

I'd much prefer figures of my STO officers!
I am all in favor of this.
With that out of the way, I support this idea.
Me Too! I would love to put it on my desk.
