This issue has been resolved. The cause of the problem was a beta graphics driver that was installed by windows updates. From now on, I'll get my updates directly from the NVidia updater, which i have set to use only stable releases. Thank you for the help!!

nothing was corrupted. your install download server disconnected me because it didn't support the resume feature that is included in the game installer. The error message "This server does not support resume" is very revealing
