As far as I know it works the same way armor does. Level 5 + items with 2 sockets need to gems (the 60,000$ kind) forget the name. Place to of the same type gem in it and it will glow. More of a flame like look actually but you get the idea.

Well a level 41 helped my cleric do FB19. Was just me and him and he killed everything on his own. I did do some healing on him tho :P Edit: He was a veonomancer
