I had a turtoise but it got me annoyed by swimming in my view the whole time. So I decided to get myself an Undine. Can't remember which one I got, but it is a lvl 37 as far as I know. I never had a fish-like pet though (except for Undine, if you can call that a fish?)

The mobs at Den of Rabid Wolves are lvl 18+ so there is a good chance that the lvl difference is too big to gain exp. for your pets. I had the same thing a couple of times.
