Read ONLY API

It would be extremely nice if there was a API ( READ ONLY ) so that guild leaders could create content on their websites.
For example...
Guild leaders ONLY get get the following about members of their guild and ONLY their guild..
  • char name
  • char lvl
  • merit
  • class
  • reborn status
  • and idealy last date logged on.

None of this would create any kind of a security issue as unlike core connect the members username is never revealed. Since its read only its impossible to change the data. Even an XML feed would be helpful. With arc evolving is this possible now?

I remember trying to get set up one several years ago, but jumping through hoops with Chinese developers kicked my ***.

I have high hopes that the Arc interface will bring something. They'll need to make data pull form the servers more accurate than they have been though.

They will probably make Yao Ming's face and say:

"Nope, thats impossible, dont expect this from us anytime soon."

    "Its for security reasons, ofcourse!"

    Nope, just laziness.

Right, but we need an API set up so that our guild websites can sync the data for the Rosters.

It would be nice for TW's too.

You guys take the game too serious.

I do even believe YOU players take the game more seriously than PWE does.

    I run my own server.
I used to have the most detailed and complete Wiki/Guide for the game around. (Haven't updated it in a long time though and don't have the time to now.)
Hell, I even used to send code for fixes to the developers.

It's a bit much some might think, yeah. But once you look past the crappy community the power creep has given us, and the lack of decent support from the Chinese developers, it's a damn good game with a lot of potential.

It can be a lot more too, and I think that we'll be seeing that over the next year.

I think the hardest part about developing a solid API for the game is the way the databases are managed.

looking at the source of the tools WE (sylen and I) have the database is a giant mess some people have some of it working but not all of us do. (there are others, but I'm not sure who they are on PWI, if they are on PWI)

But then again we have direct access to our serves, where as we do not have access to PWE's

I do ave a theory, but I cannot say that it will work, plus it is hacky if it even does work. this forum reads the characters from the servers, if you can piggyback that then you might be able to set something up on other sites

Eh, to each their own. An API would make a lot of the work I used to do (as a leader/TW coordinator) a hell of a lot easier by allowing automation of a lot of the tracking, roster upkeep, and such.

I haven't looked at server files myself -- never had any particular need for it, as I don't run my own server, and have only ever really looked into client files (including some modification of the tools Psytrac mentioned) -- but, while I understand it might be a bit of a pain, it is certainly by no means impossible. If nothing else, you can always extract data to a more API-friendly database once a day or so and use that. I'd rather have access to data that's only updated once a day than no access at all.

it is not just taking the game serious it is talking/knowing that a certain part of the actual pw community actualky knows how to handle stuff better then the actual devs because these ''community people" actually know what people want and some can realise it and others don't.

For the simple it wouldn't be bad if the actual pwi would take a hear about what they have to say most likely that can blow a new wind through the game and attract some more people because atm its like half half certain stuff is very nice designed and developed while other stuff/changes are ****.

Untill Arc settles down and we know what we are getting im going to hold on with this suggestion. As we all know the database are a mess and this would have to be done 100% which I don't think PWE are having a lot of luck with at the moment.

This is a good idea tho so im gonna put this in my notes for now.

    Thanks,

exactly!! Even a RSS feed would be incredibly helpful

there is sooo much software that could/ would be written to help site owners such as ourself. WOW, for example has numerous extension that let you plan raids, create rosters, new members on the site from guild etc... all possible via read only.

I really really really hope you follow through with this. I've been dreaming of it for 6yrs now. As the owner of one of the larger if not largest PWI guild site I can't begin to explain how big a difference this would make. EVEN IF THE ONLY THING WE CAN GET IS THE NEW INFO THAT WAS JUST RELEASED THAT WOULD BE A HUGE IMPROVEMENT!!!!
just a simple RSS FEED to guild leaders would be helpful.

    @all
yes, some of us have put an enormous amount of work into our sites. I know our guild members tell me we've got one of if not the best site in the game. Its annoying that quests change w/o any notice or explanation in the patch notes but there is not much we can do about it as it currently stands.
But I TRY to keep my content fresh and accurate as much as possible. To truly keep up with it I would have to stop playing to have enough time LOL.
I wish I had the tools to do what some of the others have done ( like extract db data ) but I'm not that lucky / talented.
We own our own server for both the site and TS3 so we have a lot of flexibility in what we do.

I remember years ago when there was only 1 guide and it wasn't even very complete, how I spent 1000's of hours LITERALLY combing through all the diff sites, picking up tiny pieces of information and turning it into a extremely complete set of articles about everything. Sometimes I would have to check 50 sites just to get one new sentence of data. Frequently having to ask for permission to use someone else's data because it was pretty complete.
LONG before the wiki was introduced some of us had already created such a thing for our members.

The bottom line is, this is a zero security risk massive help to those of us that run good sites. Hell even TS could be populated with members info making it very simple for the people who just can't seem to read.
