Too many locked threads recently

what the title says >.> Too many locked threads recently.

While i do acknowledge that the current mods are more active and watching the forums (to my delight) it seems that the amount of locked threads on average are way higher than it has been in the last few years, to the point that its actually hard to jump into a discussion without it being locked within 2-6 pages (And im talking since 2008 and accross diff. era of mods/admins)

I know you guys are doing your jobs, but i think that some of the fun threads, like the ones that include huge debates, get closed too fast because of a few butthurt-ish type of responses, which, technicallly should be ignored to keep the debates/convos/opinionated posts going. Part of the game fun, is also the forums, and if you take a step back, i think alot of the exciting/interesting threads are being closed a bit too fast as of late.
(excluding the obvious troll threads, i think their doing a good job)

I guess you could say this is sort of a request to slow down your locking triggers. >.> I know at times its nessesary but since this place isnt a nunnery, if would be nice to get some free air again like before.

Yes the new mods do seem to be very active with the close thread button

On the upside it's brought a who new level to trolling - throwing a comment get a few flames back and bye bye thread.

All in all it's quite effective in making those silly threads go away quickly that would sometimes linger for days.

You should probably just pm the mods if you think a thread shouldnt be closed. Ive done it once before to venus. She didnt undo her closing of a thread, but she did atleast explain why she did it. Making a post about it like this is just going to get closed.

i do use the pms when its a individual thing but this is something thats probably better made aware as a whole.

Some threads can start out good, but turn into rants and name calling later on. Once a thread gets to that point they have to close it. It cant really be helped.

The reasons I've seen given appear more personal in nature, and if they are closing them for the reason you give: wouldn't that indicate that they're neglecting the enforcement of the ToS?

I wholeheartedly agree. The mods on these forums act like they get a cash kickback for every thread they lock.

If any thread; starts to have a heated discussion, has had a question answered, is remotely similar to another thread, can possibly be posted in another (often dead) forum, it is immediately Locked and or Moved.

These forums wouldn't be half as dead as they are if the mods would just let threads be. Sure there are times where threads may warrant having action, but that just isn't the case here the vast majority of the time.

yes there are alt of locked threads but if you take a closer look those threads are locked because a. there are countless other threads on same topic (dq for example/nw crashes/etc))
b. they are violating ToS (discussing bans/naming and shaming)
or c. it's a giant Necro.

not all of them fit into these topics but if people would use the search function it would help alot.

The reasons they close threads has nothing to do with personal stuff. They are following the ToS and closing inappropriate threads. If you don't like it, that's too bad.

The problem is that most of the forum's population is trolls now, and the mods are trying to clean out the trolls. So the forum is going to experience a dead feeling until it can get back to having decent posters. Encouraging bad behavior by not closing the threads is not going to help anyone.

I have seen a few threads with two or three flame posts closed, when those posts can just as easily be deleted. One person does not ruin a thread. Either way, I love Kossy so I won't complain.

There's a lot more stupid threads, posts, and posters than locked posts. I consider it a good thing, really there should be more "Depthing" going on. Actually just flat out delete them. They're ****.

And that's why I'd never be a mod - because if you think the current regime is the Third Reich, I'd 3 day ban people for posting "+1". Half of this forum is full of **** that shouldn't be here.

What some people on this board, and at times many people on this board think is acceptable to post is flat out special ed level mentally challenged. Like I'm not even poking fun at those with disabilities - I'm saying some of the people here need to be checked out and entered into special classes so they can better compete with the rest of society.

I also dont like or understand the automatic closing of necro threads. It has amazed me for years and on many forums all over the net. Mods closing treads for the sole reason of them being necro.

Think about it really, how can that reason alone be a reason to close a tread ? If someone asked something about server maintanance in 2010 yes, then its logical to close it. If there is a more recent (front page) thread about the same topic, sure close it. But if it is a discussion that can still be usefull, where people just want to expand with more questions on the topic, it is so much better to necro an old thread than to start the discussion all over again from scratch and repeating everything that was already said.

Closing only because it is necro is just stupid mindless bureaucratic thinking. And that makes raises my hairs and makes me itch. I have been a mod myself for years on a forum and i know it is tough to always objectively decide when to close a thread and when not. I know it is nice to have some guidelines, but such mindless rigidness is unreasonable. If that were a good method, you'd better have the software to do the job for you.

Part of the problem may be that this new generation of mods is all too familiar with forum dynamics and individual posters, so they can catch any warning signs on threads early on. While this may be very effective in squashing trolling and preventing flaming from getting out of hand, it also means anything with something of an edge to it will likely be getting closed as these people are taking their jobs all too seriously and keeping the forums lively and active is not really a part of what they do. Overall I also feel they're doing great work but no human being is all knowing and in order for a good thread to develop you do have to give it some time, sometimes even trolling OPs do engender legitimate discussion. Yes, they are tightening the leash a bit too much, although I do sometimes see some bias in terms of which posters are allowed a bit more freedom...

It's only human for the "cop mentality" to emerge on any environment where any sort of rules need be enforced, which is likely the reason you never see LEOs anywhere in the world actually pushing for greater liberty, it doesn't make their job easier. It's our job to ensure the important issues or discussions don't get squashed, not theirs. Personally i don't think the problem is so much closed threads (there has been some genuine discussions lost, but nothing really significant) but the very strict standards being used for merging, this really buries significanty aspects of a discussion which sometimes is better to address separately. But hey, apparently now you can +1 to your heart's content...

but even if i did, thats not really going to change anything as its not just the work of a 1 person role. If someone doesnt close it, another person will. Its a matter of a different awareness.

The current ones are quick to act. This atm is both a really good thing and sometimes it could be a negative thing. Make no mistake i do really like their quickness.

i think you guys are taking what star said a bit too far. its not like she is hollering about closing, just that the closing of threads may be a bit too proactive. i think it's more of a "calm down bro" than a "stop closing stuff!!!RAWR!!!!" sort of situation.

personally i think the new(and additional) mods are doing a good job, i think having more mods lightens the load on them as a whole and allows more participation so to speak (i enjoy fuzzy's replies so muchb:chuckle). maybe star has a point and the thread closing is affecting the activeness of the forums in general. i kind of feel that there is not enough to talk about on pwi forums sometimes, i kind of blame rank equipment since gear is a large subject but since there is basically only 2 gear sets to look forward to now, there is nothing to speak about.

but back to topic, maybe more steps before closing? i admit i have seen new/old mods give warnings before, but maybe the strictness is pushing away more than it protects?

Im aware of what you are asking. You want the mods to stop closing threads that get derailed by trolls because you want to try to salvage the discussion after the discussion has already died. Id rather them close those threads so people stop feeding the trolls rather then leaving them open.

If that was the only case, id actually say it like that as im peculiar with my words. It may not be that much of a deal for someone who rarely posts, if i were in your shoes id feel the same way. But for those of us that frequent the forums and actually liven up the place, that is only part of the tree branch thats connected with many other situations that occur. There are some that do see what im saying. And they also do recognize that the admin/mods are doing a really good job, just that 'this is something we noticed that may not exactly be positive in some situations'.

Funny that you jump to the conclusion that just because i dont have 8000 post count im some kind of newb. Ive been a frequent on these forums since i started this game. I post on multiple characters. Oishii is also me, along with some others. Dont be such a ***** about it.

They are doing their jobs and the threads they close need closing. I dont see any point in dragging out threads for the sake of some peoples post counts. If anything, your post counts points towards someone who 1+'s waaay too often.
