Since I was given a pass on this (http://pwi-forum.perfectworld.com/showthread.php?t=1006022&page=10), I am now making the first (and probably last) math-only thread. This is a safe place where those with math addiction can confide in each other and seek assistance. Furthermore, if you need help with a problem, you can ask here and maybe get an answer (and perhaps lots of confusion).
Now I can stop derailing threads :o!
Also, in the past, my siggy had various equations, laws, or formulae that some people enjoyed naming. I'd change it up every so often or when I got bored with it and then the guessing would begin anew. As such, I think I'll restart that practice again (as well as asking fun, semi-challenging problems) but place it in this thread instead of my signature. (Not really challenging, mostly fun!) :3

So, let's begin, shall we? I'll start off easy:

Tell me the sum of all the alternating odd numbers from 1 to 999 (starting with -1).

Put another way...

Bonus points if you tell me why this is a neat little series :D


EDIT: Upper bound should be 500, not 999. Thanks for catching that, Laterra. This renders Cheze's answer wrong. The correct sum is 500.

    Ok I need to figure out a Northwest ordinance problem with an X in the first provided row. Normally I can do Nw. ordinance but when you add letters into math, things get upsetting for me ;_;
    How do you find what X is without any other provided information except the uh, graphy thingy with the boxies? Because you can't do the problem without all the numbers and I cant give answers with any unknowns in them q_q

    Also how is i imaginary and yet real at the same time ;-; letters shouldn't be in math. They should stay in writing.

    And imaginary numbers aren't really imaginary, love. It may not exist in the four basic number systems (Natural, Rational, Integer, Real) it exists in the complex number system.

    -incoming convoluted/poor explanation-

    Consider this rule for multiplying complex numbers:

    (a,b)(c,d) = (ac-bd, ad+bc)

    Keep in mind that imaginary numbers are multiples of i. We can prove that i exists by finding a number squared that equals -1. The number system (0,1) is such.

    (0,1)(0,1) = ( (0)(0) - (1)(1), (0)(1)+(1)(0) ) = (-1,0)

    The complex number (-1,0) is different from the real number -1, though. It's a pair of real numbers, -1 and 0, not a single real number.

    Now, consider the rules for adding complex numbers:

    (a,b) + (c,d) = (a+c, b+d)

    Complex numbers of the form (a,0) behave identically to the way ordinary real numbers a behave. They add and multiply in exactly the same way that ordinary real numbers do. So:

    (a,0) + (b,0) = (a+b,0)
    (a,0)(b,0) = (ab,0)

    But since real numbers a and complex numbers of the form (a,0) are the same as far as their arithmetic behavior is concerned, you view them as just two different representations of the same concept.

    So, you can say the complex number (-1,0) and the real number -1 are the same. Thus, (0,1), when squared, gives -1. So, i exists. It is just the pair of numbers (0,1) under the above rules for adding and multiplying.


    Decus can probably explain better, i'm just regurgitating what my math teacher told me freshman year.

    Sorry for taking so long, the forum would not display right on my desktop at home so I had to view this at work.

    Frankly, I am confused by what you mean when you say Northwest Ordinance problem. Is it some sort of word problem or a data analysis problem? Forgive me, I've just never heard of it.

    When we say (a,b) we mean the generic form of a complex number --> a + b*i
    A number with real part a and imaginary part b*i

    As far as i is concerned, I must confess that I have never heard of i as being both real and imaginary. (It is the imaginary unit after all!) The one that is frequently confused is if zero is imaginary or real. Indeed, what Teppeii said was correct, but it does not make i both real and imaginary. It just says that the complex number (0,1) multiplied by itself ("squared") satisfies for existence of i and that (-1,0) is, for all intents and purposes, the same as real -1

    I even looked into some research and, while I confess that complex analysis is not a strong point of mine, I have not found anything to imply that i was both real and imaginary. The only thing I can think of that you might have meant is that 0 + 1*i has both a real and an imaginary part (and is = i)

    Make sense?

    And I guess I went off on a tangent before reading the actual question. i is, well, imaginary o.o Necessary for mathematics in many facets, but imaginary nonetheless. Sorry, Tearle. Thought you were asking how it could exist, rather than the textbook terminology of "real."

    Uhm, the northwest ordinance its like for data and timing things I guess? I was absent when my teacher taught it but it's a box like matrix thingy with more boxes and there's way too many numbers ;-;
