Thread closing question

I don't intend for this to be a 'whiny' thread or anything, or even trying to confront the mods because I'm 'angry' or anything., but I have to wonder what the situation really is.

I wonder recently why it is that so many threads get closed. Is it a rule/guideline for forum mods or GMs to close any thread that can be considered 'finished'? As in, the main question has been answered or whatnot.

Throughout the years here its only been recently that I've noticed this being the case. Other times threads, even with things being answered, they could still be left open for discussion on the topic. Its a little depressing to see threads being closed just because the main issue has been addressed even though there's other related conversations going on within it, and there's no flaming or trolling happening to make it a problem thread. b:surrender So my question is if that's how it was always supposed to be, or what..?

I can only assume that threads that continue another similar subject are closed because they should make a new thread. New people would not know what was giong on since the original post title would be misleading.

Other threads get closed since they are majorally supposed to be in one major thread. Also known as the QQ main threads that get stickied.

I believe it's the same reason cops give out a lot of useless and baseless traffic tickets. That is...they're mandated to fill some sort of quota by their superiors.

While that does make sense, I mean conversations about the original post even though its been concluded. Like a thread closing recently cut me out of a conversation I was having with a few people about the thread and I felt just a little bit stepped on since there was nothing going on that I felt required a closing. That's why I ask. Its less for any new people who might look at it, and more for the people who are currently enjoying chatting about something that happened to come up. (I know pms are an option, but how are you supposed to involve multiple people in that when you're chatting with more than one in these threads?)

This is not true. Atleast in my opinion I think it balances all the BS tickets that don't get issued because some of us don't have DD's and shed tears on command.

Specifically the one that makes me ask is the one about Waffle talking about being a mod. (Again, I want to stress I'm not trying to attack you about any of it) But there's also been a good few other threads, even ones I've not been involved in other than reading it that have been closed though nothing that I saw was wrong with it. :< Its just sad is all and I wonder if that's something you guys do to avoid possible necros in the far future or something, or if its something that you're supposed to do that they didn't follow up so much on back when?

Actually, it is true. Every local police force is mandated to fill traffic ticket quotas. It's "supposed" to help enforce safety and blah blah blah, but what it ends up doing in towns like mine is **** off anyone driving to work at 5am (because not all jobs are 9-5) since "generic rookie cop #5" is told by his superiors to do so.

One big thing that has bothered me before with closed threads is a mod will say something to conclude whatever on it, for example on a thread of mine asking a question. And I'm then unable to thank them for their response and it drives me to anxiety that I can't say anything and makes it seem like I'm not appreciative. b:surrender At least to me it feels like that. That or if I made a mistake or something I'm unable to apologize for it in the same thread. And the mod wouldn't know if I cared that I goofed up, and anyone who may read it may think that I'm just dumb or mean or something for 'purposely' doing/saying whatever may have happened.

Let me see here. You get pulled over at 5am in the morning for doing 25km over the limit. There is no one around for you to cause damage to.

The above is just an example of what you may be speaking of.

You get the ticket and are pissed. You broke the law right?? Let me know that not getting a ticket when you break the laws is ok. Like I said, if you got DD's and a nice smile, feel free to speed.

I live in a smaller town and wish more people would get tickets. Having a young daughter and many friends with young children more tickets may make people slow down and pay attention a bit more.

Just for example, a couple was killed 2 weeks ago by a young driver messing aruond. Now there are 3 young girls with no parents.

IJS there should be more tickets handed out.

Please be nice, guys.. I don't want fighting on a thread that's supposed to be a calm and polite question. b:sad I don't want this one being closed because of that kind of thing.. I'd like the question answered. :<

I've seen Frankie shut down threads where the main question had been answered precisely because the topic, or ensuing converstaion, was likely to lead to flaming at some point. Not necessarily a bad call. The thread you're refering to was Waffle's try at making mod, it was extremely likely to devolve to flaming at some point...

Those I certainly understand and don't blame him a bit for. I can see that it possibly could have ended that way, but many pages in as it was, there wasn't a single post that was at all directly flaming or even being rude to Waffle or anyone else. I thought it was an incredibly mature thread all things considered. I could see it as a preemptive measure, but I wonder if that's really all it is. I'm not a mod or someone who would even comprehend the trouble that could come around, so I can't really say that it 'wouldn't be hard to just close it when it gets bad'. I mean, it wouldn't, but I suppose it is just one more thread they have to keep their eyes on, but still... its just the influx of closed threads recently that makes me even bother thinking about it. It just seems such a shame to have so many of them locked up when they aren't yet blatantly negative.

The one you are referring sorta shocked me. Seeing who was posting in it and no flaming commenced was weird.

I was assume it was done based on past threads by certain users.

9/10 threads like this ignite eventually.

I know, right!? Even I suspected it would get really bad as soon as I read the first paragraph of the OP.. But again, that brought this question to mind, considering that fact and then other threads that I've known weren't even close to getting flamey being closed down. This case, I can honestly understand the preventative measures, but it made me curious of the rest of them, you know? There's just been so many recently then there used to a year ago and such. Which makes me wonder, like I've said, if the mods just were taking things easy back then or what.

Ah, I closed Waffle's thread partly because the new mod team is already set, and partly because I didn't want other players to follow his lead and start creating threads here in General Discussion applying to be a mod. It's something I think belongs in a PM, not in a new thread.

At the very least, a thread like that should be in Off-topic.

Really? Out of curiosity, for something like applying for mod, who would people contact? If you were all still looking, would you be open to getting those? Or any mod? And I get you, but from my personal thoughts, I wouldn't think that would stop anyone from making more. b:surrender Perhaps if you said this right here when you closed it? Like saying that PMs would be the way to go rather than forum, I think that may have been a little more understandable. b:cute But thank you for answering! I do appreciate it, and it explains a good bit about that one. I just seem to think anymore that closed threads seem to antagonize people more into making more pointless ones? :< But that's just my observation and opinion. o.o

Well, that mod thread clearly was going to cause flaming at some point I guess. Others like this one: http://pwi-forum.perfectworld.com/showthread.php?t=876072 ... The title itself already gave an idea of why it was blocked (but mainly it was for the flaming in it, I believe)

The "Yulk for mod" thread was funny, but it was like "flaming Yulk"... which should be allowed... but since its not... Lock away.

This other one http://pwi-forum.perfectworld.com/showthread.php?t=876012&page=2 still lives... well its fun O_0

And of course, any thread against PWE / GMs / Mods / Devs / Hamsta will get locked. And thats ok, as long as there were no real, valid, and "polite" (as in, with no curses in between) points that made it worth keeping the thread open.

Oh... but now that I posted here, it might get locked... its my curse... I'm sorry b:sadb:surrender

Edit; And me, i love forums. I troll a footie forum and one for politics besides this one. This is by far the most civilized however. So, two guys, would recent activity be a clue? Mayhaps teh chosen ones be busy learning their jobs (sry had a hamster moment lol).

Mods are not employees of PWE, so this link isn't what you'd be looking for if you're trying to apply to be a moderator.

In any case, I don't generally choose mods from people applying; most of the time I'll get recommendations from current mods/CMs or I'll just notice a helpful response from a player, check their post history to get a better idea of what they're like, and then go from there.

Welcome!
