Possible Geomagnetic storm in our near future...

A Geomagnetic storm may be in our very near future. A CME (coronal mass ejection) event has occurred on the sun and is pointed Earthward. What this may mean for you...
Northern latitude clients might experience Connectivity issues with their Internet, power surges and power outages. Large CME's have been known to trigger cascade failures in power-grids.
Mid latitude clients may experience slower internet, and possible outages as well.
If the CME triggers a large Geomagnetic storm, it can have grave consequences for your gaming experience, if you find unusually slow game response (lag) or trouble connecting you may be effected by this event. Usually these events only last a few hours to a day or so and then they are gone so don't fret too badly if you suddenly start having issues when you normally don't. Nature pawns man and in this case... there isn't anything that can be done that is cost effective, to prevent a CME from causing troubles on our tiny little planet.

Radio data from the SIDC show a type II burst suggesting that a CME was
associated with the M8.4 flare peaking at 11:26UT today, Feb 12, 2010.
The source region of this CME is located near the central meridian. This
CME is Earth directed. We don\'t have yet any information about the
speed and the extent.

0..o you might wanna think about that. Geomagnetic storms basically shove a LOT of energy into the atmosphere. They are what causes the Northern and Southern Lights for one. They have a huge effect on Earths magnetic field, and much like a generator, produce in our atmosphere and electronics, power surges.

Nope, I am hooked into the SIDC and get e-mails from them much like the SIDC PRESTO alert I posted with the above. Usually they just have basic information about sunspots etc but when one goes nuckin futz, they send out a presto.
I am among many things, an amature astronomer and amature solar astronomer. Yeah I know, I have some odd hobbies.

Nothing to be scared of really. If you look in one of my posts above I placed a link to a wiki about it.
Most Geomagnetic storms we have don't amount to much more than pretty aurora's that we get to watch. Sometimes though they do bad things to our power-grids and electronics.

If we experience a bad storm, it could mean internet and power for some knocked out for days or weeks. Like I said above, most storms we don't even notice, but this one is heading right at us, so it 'might' cause us some problems. Just warning people ahead of time that we might be about to have some issues soon and not to sweat it because ain't nothin we can do to stop it or prevent it.

Don't worry you'll die fast. Your body will prob melt straight away from the intense heat admitted from the radiation. Thanks for the siggy Dorset

No, possibly, no.
No, our planet is well protected by our magnetic field. If Earth didn't have this, one good solar storm and we would be crispy critters.
Possibly, but only if the CME causes a large geomagnetic storm on Earth. It is more likely that a few places might lose power for a few hours, some people may have internet problems and overall life goes on like normal.
No, the Earth is much like a spinning top. It would take a massive stellar object impacting us to flip us and if that happened, the least of our worries will be if the Earth is standing on it's figurative head.

Damn straight.
You might consider signing up to the SIDC's e-mail alert system (links for same in my first post). You will get a lot of 'boring stuff' that basically amounts to "all is good, no huns on the horizon' but the PRESTO alerts will let you know if we have something heading our way that might give you kittens.
