Understanding refining

What is refining concretely, and how does one go about doing it?

From what I can tell so far you may spend mirage celestones at an elder for a chance of enhancing an equipment's stats by a random number, but I'm not even sure about this xD

Also, can it only be done on certain types of gear or does it work for all weapons, armor, and ornaments?

Thanks in advance for any help with understanding refining b:pleased

Refining will always have the same effect on a particular piece of gear, it is linked to the type of gear and its level.

Armour always gives HP (arcane gives least, heavy gives most)
Ornaments give more of whatever they gave (so a pdef necklace will give more pdef)
Weapons get more attack / magic attack.

You are correct that it's only a chance to get the +, you have missed that failing resets the + all the way back to zero (unless you used cash shop items)

Not entirely true for all ornaments. Mag Rings receive Mag Res and Might Rings receive Pdef when upgraded, but they don't usually/have to give that by themselves.

Just a few amendments and additions to be said.

Firstly, not all ornaments get their normal bonuses enhanced. Magical rings will give magical defense and Physical rings will give physical defense. This is in contrast to the attack power benefits of the rings.

Secondly, the actual bonus you get increases depending on the level of the item. So, for example, a level 5 armor might give +12 HP, while a level 6 armor gives +13hp. For that reason, lower level armors may not be worth the costs of refining, as the gains are much smaller. At higher levels, however, equipment will gain a siginficant boost from refining. Also note that I refer to the armor level, not the level at which you equip it.

These bonuses are then multiplied depending on how well refined it is. At +2 the bonus is doubled (From +12hp to +24hp), but at +12 this increases to an incredible 37.5x bonus (From +12hp to +450hp!).

For full details on the refining process and the multipliers, there's an official guide here.

    Enjoy.
