A comment by LloydAsplund - Sanctuary (which I have quoted below) has made me think over my actions in this game.
Wait... you actually have to KILL things for quests?b:cry

Yes, we kill mobs. The wraith are an evil race who's sole purpose is to destroy us all. I know that, you know that, the NPCs who give us quests know that, and Pan Gu himself has said that. That's why we kill them.

But tell me, do we really know that the wraith are evil? Has anyone here ever seen a wraith attack an NPC? Yes, there are occasional "attacks" on different towns but do the wraith ever enter the towns? Most are only small settlements with little in the way of defenses. The wraith could have easily killed every NPC there and left before any players arrived to "defend" against them. Instead, the wraith merely wait outside and don't even attack until they're attacked first.

Yes, at higher levels there are wraith who will attack players but can you really blame them?

Remember when you first started playing? The mobs you had to kill were very docile, weren't they? Of course they were, all they wanted to do was live with us in peace. Then, because someone tells you to and pays you a small pittance, you begin massacring the poor wraith. As you reach higher and higher levels, more and more wraith begin to attack you on sight. Why shouldn't they? You've killed their friends and family by the hundreds. Grief and the desire for vengeance show that the supposedly evil wraith are not the heartless monsters that we were led to believe.

The question now is why. Why the deception? Why do these NPCs send us out time and time again to slaughter these wraith? Sadly, I must confess that I do not know the answer to this. I am currently working on several theories for the reason but I have no evidence to support any of them. Perhaps in the future I will write them down and hope that I am not silenced by Duke Blacke's secret police.

Just because they don't do any harm doesn't mean they're innocent. Once they're angered, they will do something harmful.

Besides, once you get past lv. 30, most mobs pull aggro and they attack you so of course, you might as well attack them. b:thanks

Hm, that was one of my theories actually. Have you ever noticed that whenever someone sends you to find a person then that person is usually (and conveniently) dead? For all we know, General Mu could have been General Summer's predecessor. A power hungry Summer might have been too impatient to wait for Mu to die of old age.

Also, two people thought of the same thing without influencing each other in any way! It must be true!!!

Of course they'll attack you if you attack them first! It's either that or run away and wraith don't have access to drugs that make them move faster. As for the level 30 aggro, I'm sure that you've built up a pretty good reputation as a bloodthirsty wraith murderer at that point.

OMG, it's all been a lie.

I once was blind but now i see the truth of it all.

How could we all have been played for suckers so easily.

I feel sick. I have massacred so many innocent mobs. I have even played mind games with some mobs and forced them to kill their own brothers. Sick indeed.

How can i go on with all this guilt i feel?

...As soon as you enter Perfect World, you are destined to be a hero/heroine (no, no, winners don't use drugs), if you work hard enough for it, that is. That said, like in any MMORPG/RPG, you are also fated to massacre all kinds of monsters, peaceful or aggressive.

In MMOs you basically are a sellsword, a mercenary, who would go for some glorious quests but also annihilate certain creatures for dubious motives. 'Oh, that undine bullied my girlfriend! Go destroy her and her sisters for me' or the even funnier 'That mongoose bit my rear! go punish it'. And of course you cannot play mediator.

The Wraith, the root of all evil, on the other hand, is a very strong, very numerous, but also very very disorganized army. They post monsters and bosses all scattered on the map, that will just stand there in the open... If they were serious, they would have gone in one front (possibly a surprise attack) and wiped everything out. But like in RPGs and many other games, it never happens, for obvious reasons.

As for the forces of the Humans, Elves and Untamed (and soon Tideborn), have you ever seen a general or seasoned guard more or less wandering the map and do their work? Of course not, you are the one assigned to that.
The cities are full of civilians and a few guards. The true (very, very disorganized as well) army is made of the gamers.

Anyway, to return to the main point, you are asked to destroy the wraith. For what true motive? The darker ones would supposedly and realistically include pride, vengeance, sadism, among others. Pretty intruiging, isn't it?
But you are not allowed to ask. You do the job and keep it into the utmost secrecy. No mediation with the enemy, no treason possible either.

...Otherwise there would be no story, yes?

Yus, the town guards frequently do their work. On red names. :P

Let's face it, those guys could probably one-shot harpie wraith. Duke too has a permanent telecoustic buff and can see anywhere at all in the world. He's probably the overlord.

The NPC's are probably just part of some secret organisation, setting you against the innocent wraiths to distract you from learning the truth.

Red name gamers usually outsmart them. b:laugh No matter the power, if you have no reach, it's all moot.

Those guys are plain invincible (probably) and it would not be fun being ksed by them if they were freelancers.
As for Duke, since the day I learned he is quite a weak husband (seven wives, with two alleged materialistic ones, that fled from him... wow)... No wait, is he faking being a wimp? ...Overlord you say?! My head hurts... b:chuckle

Note: The following is the product of WQ boredom. As such, it's likely to be considered horribly excessive, crudely written, and the product of someone mentally unstable. If any of these concepts tend to frighten or confuse you...take the time to scroll past now.

    ====================================================

Do you really want to know the truth? Really? Then all of you...just close your eyes (Er...on second thought...keep them open. Kinda hard to read like that...), clear your minds...and let's think about this logically...

At the very beginning of our PWI lives, you're dropped into the middle of nowhere, buck naked, and given a stick. Just a stick...and the inherent skills that flow through your veins, of course. Now, horribly lost and confused, you desperately look around for some sign of civilization...

...Or start thwacking things with your stick...but anyways...

Suddenly, you meet other forms of intelligent life! Or...as intelligent as NPCs can come across to be anyways. Carefully wading through the masses of strange creatures...and the poor mobs that are being wailed upon by these savage beasts as well...you make your way to that one person that actually seems to have a clue what the hell is going on.

They point you in the direction of the masses of bugs and flora that have since surrounded you and your savior, telling you to slaughter them without mercy, and to return to them when you've collected several samplings of their remains. Desperately seeking answers, you have no choice but to comply, and thus engage in combat with these seemingly docile creatures, who only turn on you once you've landed the first blow.

After what seems like an eternity, you've finished the errands you've been assigned, and are directed towards the main city. Thankful to be given a path to follow, you trudge off towards civilization with a newfound determination. Not to mention a few pieces of equipment that you've likely collected from the monsters you've slain. You don't waste thoughts as to WHY you were asked to accomplish those tasks...or why that bug you squashed was carrying a pair of axes with +1 Strength augmentations...you're just thankful to be alive.

And as you walk away...that NPC grins evilly to themselves. For you see, those mobs you've just slain aren't your true enemies at all. They're nothing more than livestock, raised and grown with the express intent of being massacred by you and every other would be hero. Why you ask? Well...that'll be made clear in time...

But none of this worries you in the least. Your only concern is making it to town and finding something...ANYTHING to help you survive in what you've already determined to be a cruel, unforgivable world. Those level 2 wolves hit you kinda hard, after all...so if you're going to continue in your self appointed journeys, you're going to need better armaments.

Before long, you find yourself in the town square, where the sight of merchants peddling their goods fills your eyes and the sounds of others like you calling for assistance fills your ears. You wonder to yourself about this chest that people seem to have jumping or flying towards...and why they're having so much trouble accomplishing what you assume to be a simple feat...but let such thoughts fade as you find yourself face to face with the one you've been sent to meet.

With a smile on their face, your next acquaintance sends you off without a moment's hesitation. After (hopefully) upgrading your armaments, learning a few simple crafting skills, and getting a better feel for your newfound abilities, you set off in search of your new targets. This new lot looks a bit more vicious than the ones you've encountered previously...but like before they remain docile. At least until you try to gut them like a fish...then they kinda get a bit pissy...

But they're no match for your might. And thus, a few pieces of gold richer and carrying the spoils of your hunt, you return to the elder to boast of your accomplishments.

The elder rewards you in kind, granting you permission to speak with those that will further your growth. Your progress is truly staggering, they say! Why...you're certainly the hero of legend!

Yes...you and every other poor soul that have been sucked into their sick and twisted little game...

But you're none the wiser of that. Drunk with power, reveling in your newly attained glory, you happily accept the next set of tasks. It'll be easy! Nothing you haven't done already...

...But when you approach this next group...something is different...

Without warning, they lash out at you! Fangs, claws, horns and crude weapons all brought to bear against your unprepared self. Survival instincts and adrenaline kick in, and you fight back with all the fury you can muster. Surprisingly enough, you emerge victorious. Broken and bloody perhaps...but victorious nevertheless.

But the primal fear that overcame you in that moment has already begun to wrap itself around your frail mortal heart like a snake...constricting you...sending shivers down your spine...

"These things truly are monsters!" you think to yourself, your breathing still heavy from the intense, life-or-death struggle. "The elder was right! We must stop these fiends from consuming us all!"

With these thoughts fresh in your mind, you hurry back to town. All the while, you're unaware of the masses watching your every move. They're the comrades of the ones you've slain...the mothers, fathers, brothers, sisters...the ones that were left behind after you relentlessly butchered their precious family...

Word travels fast throughout the Wraith ranks of your atrocities...and soon many of the vast races of the world know who you are. You...and everyone like you. The murderers sent by the Humans, Elves and Untamed...the heartless monsters that feel an insatiable need to dominate others with their superior intelligence and technology...

Soon, the news of your crimes reaches the ranking officers of the Wraith tribes...the grunts...the foot soldiers...the elders...the nobility. You have been deemed a threat to the continued peace and tranquility of this Perfect World. And as such, increased hostility ensues.

As you make progress in your travels, you feel the aftershocks of your previous actions. Monsters similar in fashion to the ones before are now coming at you with increased ferocity. They've cast aside simple combat tactics and now fight you in earnest. Unlike before, you can feel the killing intent as they land each blow. As fights progress, their desperation sets in...they strike faster, harder, and make active attempts to rend your flesh or sink their venomous fangs into you in hopes of making your rot from the inside out...

But you endure...and time and time again you manage to return to town a little bit stronger than you did when you left. Until at last, you're deemed worthy to face the elites of the 'enemy' ranks. You're told to form groups...and hunt down the lords and ladies of the Wraith. Without complaint, you do as you're told. You find others like you, that have endured similar trials and tribulations as yourself...and hunt down these fiendish monstrosities.

But you're not up against simple Wraith civilians this time...oh no. This time you find yourself against seasoned warriors...true veterans that have fought off countless other like yourself in the names of their fallen brethren. With the thought of thousands...millions of their fallen comrades-in-arms fresh in their minds, and the determination to end your reign of terror in their heart, they attack you VIOLENTLY as soon as they're aware of your presence!

All of their experience and strength is brought to bear against you...and you and your allies are brought to the very limits of your abilities, and you struggle desperately to slay your appointed enemy before the same happens to you. Perhaps you manage to best them, and they fall to the ground exhausted...but you've not killed them. Oh no...despite your best efforts, you just can't seem to kill them completely. They ALWAYS seem to come back. But you've demoralized and incapacitated them for the time being at least, bring a false sense of 'peace' back to the area.

You return, successful in your quest. Songs of praise are sung in your honor at home, while news of your nefarious deeds spreads further still throughout the Wraith hordes. In retaliation for their undeserved treatment, savage attacks are made on all fronts by combined forces of the Wraith tribes. Worse still, news begins to spread of Human, Untamed, and Elf soldiers being 'corrupted' by their influences. Of course you believe these words, and offer yourself as a weapon to stop their heinous crimes.

All the while. you remain ignorant to the fact that those that were 'corrupted' were merely awakened to the truth, and felt compelled to side with the innocent Wraiths in the hopes of opening the eyes of you and those like you to the cruel and vicious reality of it all...

That's right...you and all adventurers like you are nothing but pawns. Mere sacks of meat being carefully cultivated, much like those monsters you shamelessly beat to death in the name of 'survival' back at the start of your journey, and thrown into battle in the name of 'Justice' and 'Peace'.

But how could you know that you were being manipulated so? That you were being taught to hate an enemy that never wanted anything to do with you in the first place? You, in your fragile state of mind, could only think about survival. That IS why you listened to those people that asked you to maim those innocent creatures in the first place, right? Of course it is. It's a convenient excuse...so why not use it? No one would know better...

No one but the elders of each race...who watch with sadistic glee as your actions bring them ever closer to complete dominance. They who have decided that the Wraiths stand in the way of that goal, and they who have forged you into one of many tools that they hope will aid in the removal of them.

But you'll never care. You're happy with the strength you've attained, the riches that your labors have earned you; pretty clothes, trusty steeds, weapons fashioned from the remnants of those that you've cut down. You don't even stop to think about the countless innocents you've slaughtered in your ignorance...or why they ceaselessly assault the smaller encampments littering the countryside. No...without any sort of thought whatsoever you arrive on the scene like you've done countless times before, cutting down anything and everything in your wake. Even those that you once called an ally, should they dare stand in your way...

But the brainwashing has long since run it's course. Others nearby can simply stand in awe of your insatiable blood lust. But to you...it's just another day at the office. Indeed...without realizing it, you've already been trapped in this Perfect World.

We're doing it for the environment...the wraiths produce too many greenhouse gasses.

Woops, did my little non-sense post lead into this random convo?
I was early taught to work as well as play,
    My life has been one long, happy holiday;
Full of work and full of play-
I dropped the worry on the way-
And God was good to me everyday.
