Okay I updated to what appears to be the next patch but it still says serves offline. Is this the Next patch or not. The new patch was updated instantly where others took 5 minutes. Has anyone else experienced this?

They don't have to be :( I know they turn into foxes, which doesn't really make since if you picked something other than a fox...

Oh well, it's 4:30am and I'm tired, restless and bored. Lemme alone :P

I would like to see other forms. Such as, if you pick a lion, you turn into a lion, a wolf into a wolf, etc. They'd still have the same skills, but match their humanoid form.

Anyone else getting "Unable to connect to server" while at the character select screen? (Yes, I see my characters. "Confirm" seems to just make the box go away. I'm just afraid to enter game.)

I'm now running version 60 of the client, automatically updated (since there was no manual patch... grrr...). I suspect this to be the cause; I always manually patch, and make it even more of a habit since the expansion since it took a reinstall to get the patcher updated with "The Lost World" graphics. b:surrender

I'm gonna be unhappy if I waited almost 4 hours and have to uninstall and reinstall the game then patch to 59 manually then automatic patch to 60... b:sad

Oh, ugh... These take forever... But it's verifying now... I didn't even see what was patched, it was so fast; that probably correlates to corrupt files. :(

Any word on a manual patch? I don't want to run the game on my other computers without one now. :(

That is unfortunate... A verify (apparently) worked on my laptop, but I hope I don't have to do it on every computer I play on. That will get tedious quick. b:shocked

If you have a sizable USB thumb drive, a DVD burner, or a bunch of CDs and a CD burner, or a network that can support Windows File Sharing, you can simply copy the files from the Verified computer to the other computers. It'll probably take a bit of time, but it's rather reliable and fairly quick.

Actually, that made me wonder... I have multiple computers on my LAN from which I may play. I never play from more than 2 or 3 at once. (I'm not the only one in the house who plays, FWIW.) It's installed on all the computers, which, quite honestly, is a waste of disk space. Sure, space is cheap, but why waste it? (Especially in the case of the Mac which ONLY boots into Windows for Perfect World, as we can't get it working with Crossover.)

So, the question is this: Is there any (good) reason that we can't run the game over an NFS mount (preferable as my file server is not a Windows system, and Samba kinda sucks more than NFS)? I realize that the map load times will be slower, but really, most of the game seems to cache in RAM anyhow and the game has intelligent prefetching.

The real issue I can think of is file locking, and game settings. I realize that the Launcher/updater.exe/whatever locks something to prevent multiple instances of the game. If that's simply a mutex, having the game on a remote mount will still allow each machine to launch the game. But does the client require exclusive access to files? I noted that there's a userdata folder in the element folder. Would running multiple game instances (using different user accounts, of course) cause issues with that folder? I suspect that I can use a symlink to point that folder someplace else (I think the Windows NFS client treats symlinks as junctions) if so.

The biggest benefit would be space savings on the LAN machines, and only having to update once per week (instead of grabbing a manual update and applying to each machine, even if the game won't be played on it that week).

I just haven't taken the time yet, honestly, to figure out whether this would actually work. I'm sure that it'd most certainly be an "unsupported configuration", but so is playing under Crossover or Parallels or something. And plenty of people seem to do that just fine. b:pleased

Is this at all feasible? Am I drinking too many energy drinks? Or is all this against ToS and I really should not attempt it? b:laugh

(Mods, feel free to split this into its own thread if you think it's relevant for that. I didn't want to post to a fresh thread, as it would probably get all sorts of useless player speculation. At least most of those people are ignoring this maintenance thread now... b:laugh)

I had no problem running the game client from a Windows File Sharing mapped drive. Your mileage may vary through other implementations, but both Samba and NFS should work if you can map them in a drive-like manner.

The basic issue is that you need write/modify permissions for the entire folder. Other than that, the game client runs pretty much anywhere on a Windows system.

I'd be very concerned about network and drive contention, though. It's very easy to get a major drop in performance.

I'd think it'd be easier to have one computer update the client, and then propagate the changes through a network xcopy or comparable shell script.

Sweet, that's great to hear. b:pleased Are there any particular folders that I should be concerned about locking in, however? The userdata folder, certainly appears to be a good one to look at, as each system has different performance settings. And, yes, part of the point of this is to be able to run multiple computers at once from the same install.
I'd be very concerned about network and drive contention, though. It's very easy to get a major drop in performance.

Agreed. From past experience playing other versions of Perfect World on far less capable machines, however, I don't think performance will drop to a point where that will be an issue. (The file server is using multiple drives in a ZFS pool, and it has 4 Fast Ethernet ports trunked to the LAN. Since I don't foresee more than 3 simultaneous clients, contention shouldn't be a big deal.)
I'd think it'd be easier to have one computer update the client, and then propagate the changes through a network xcopy or comparable shell script.

I suppose I could rsync things around, but that loses one huge benefit of it being in a central location: the Mac doesn't need to have such a huge Boot Camp partition. ;) The PWI folder is 2.75GB alone. Add in the Windows install, the swap file, and a few other odds and ends, you're easily looking at a partition that has 10GB data on it. Add some slack space and you easily have a 15-20GB partition.

I'd love to see if Windows Fundamentals for Legacy PCs will run Perfect World properly (it appeared to run about as well as it does in XP, under virtualization). If it does, since the Mac only boots into Windows for PWI, we can probably shrink that partition down to under 5GB (including free space!) by using a networked installation. b:cool

Thanks, gattsuru, I think you've helped me figured out this weekend's "big project". b:laugh
