Do you get the Announcements window when you first enter the client, and does it have the current information? Have you been able to connect before, and if so, have you made any network changes recently or moved to a publicly maintained network (college, university)?

Having no ping suggests that it can't get connectivity with the servers over port 29000. Can you download nmap and use the command "nmap -p29000 -PN pwigc3.perfectworld.com" within its zenmap GUI.

I'm having the same issue. I set up my router to forward port 29000 to my IP address (which has been set as a static IP) and it still does not give me any response from the server. I downloaded nMap like you suggested, ran the query, and this is what I receive:
    Starting Nmap 4.76 ( http://nmap.org ) at 2008-10-11 16:28 Eastern Daylight Time

Warning: Hostname pwigc3.perfectworld.com resolves to 8 IPs. Using 64.74.134.54.

    Interesting ports on 64.74.134.54:

    PORT STATE SERVICE

    29000/tcp open unknown

So you've got layer 4 connectivity, DNS is working...

Can you tell me the contents of your serverlist.txt (default location : C:\Program Files\Perfect World Entertainment\Perfect World International\element\userdata\server\ )?

Hm... perhaps power cycling your router, and restarting your computer would be the next ones to try, followed by making sure you're using an Administrator-level account (in XP) or Running as Administrator (in Vista).

May I ask your physical location, and your ISP?

I'm in Gainesville, FL and using Cox Communications for my ISP. I'm going to power cycle right now and try again. I'll report back.

    No luck.

If it helps, this is what the splash screen looks like before loading the actual client:

    PW.JPG

I don't know what the server tags are supposed to look like but mine have a red circle and they blink.

Mine look the same, and I'm able to log in, so I assume it's intended behavior. Hm... You're not in or near one of the blocked IP address ranges, you've got connectivity to the server at least some of the time on that particular port, and you're having no problem conversing with the web server or launcher update server.

Have you restarted the computer since the issue popped up? Are you using any firewalls? Have you been able to access the services before? Have you run a Verify?

If none of the above help, please send a support ticket in with an attached image of a tracert (Start->Run->cmd, type "tracert pwigc2.perfectworld.com", take a screenshot and save it as a .jpg file) and a link to this thread's url.

Are you using an ISP that uses PPP (usually requires you to type a username and password to log onto their internet services)?

I have restarted the computer and run a verify and that did not fix the problem. The only firewall I have is internal to the router and I eliminated that by setting myself as the DMZ host and still have the issue. I have never been able to access PWI. This weekend was my discovery of the game.

I also ran a tracert like you said. The first two hops time out, it finally starts jumping through the IP addresses, and then times out at the 12th hop and just dies off. I'll submit a ticket right now.

nmap has... problems... with PPP connections, so it's not too useful of a diagnostic tool, there.

Can you do a tracert to pwigc3.perfectworld.com? It's not quite as useful, but it'll still be some information.

In Windows XP, go to Start->Run..., enter "cmd" in the white box and press enter, then type "tracert pwigc3.perfectworld.com" (without the quotes). To copy the result, right click in the black space of the command prompt, click Select All, and then press Enter on your keyboard. Come back here, open a Reply, and press CTRL and V simultaneously.

In Windows Vista, it's mostly the same, but instead type cmd into the Start Search box to start.

Switching to a different username fixed the issue? Do the usernames have different administrative rights on your computer?

    Congratulations on the fix, Kalgorn.

Nope. They both has administrative rights. I'm going to try it on the other user name just to see if that is the problem.

saint82, I'm afraid I'm going to have to suggest you contact your ISP. They either seem to be blocking a lot of traffic, or using a very non-standard implementation of PPP. They'll know more about dealing with these problems than anyone else.

If anyone is trying to connect from one of these countries, you WILL NOT be able to play PWI:

    China
    Hong Kong
    Japan
    Macau
    Malaysia
    North Korea
    Philippines
    South Korea
    Taiwan
    Turkey
    Vietnam

If you are running any software to change your IP address source, this could be giving you issues as well.

Contact your ISP and have them prioritize packets going to and from these addresses:

    Sanctuary (PVE) pwigc2.perfectworld.com
    29000:64.74.134.24
    29000:64.74.134.25
    29000:64.74.134.47
    29000:64.74.134.48

Also, if you have a router or cable/DSL modem that is 3 years or older, you may need to upgrade.

I wish I had a clue why this is so, but my issue with lack of ping to the servers was based on my Windows XP login. I switched users and it worked perfectly. I even tried switching back to double check and it is definately the case. The other username gets no ping in the game client.

    I am so confused.

You're a very smart person. I had never even thought to check that. I had PeerGuardian running on the other account and it never occured to me. I don't know why the incoming data from the PWI servers was flagged to be blocked but it was.

    Interesting.

I'm just throwing possibilities at it. You're the one that found the solution.

We use a non-standard port (and although I am not allowed to check, probably a non-standard packet design), so that would not be a surprising thing for that type of software to block. Thank you for bringing it to our attention, so we can contact the designers of that software, and deal with these issues faster in the future. Good luck to you.
